A Sculpture Celebrating Saudi Arabia Has Been Erected on Ground Zero

A sculpture celebrating Saudi Arabia’s place in the G20 Summit was erected on the World Trade Center grounds last week, a stone’s throw away from the 9/11 memorial.

Shaped to resemble a piece of candy, the nine-foot-tall statue bears the Kingdom’s emerald flag emblazoned with the Arabic inscription, “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the prophet.” It was created by French sculptor Laurence Jenkell in 2011 as part of the larger installation “Candy Nations” which depicts G20 countries as sugary delights, and has since been featured in over 25 countries. All 20 sculptures are currently on display outside the Oculus shopping center.

I first created flag candy sculptures to celebrate mankind on an international level and pay tribute to People of the entire world,” Jenkell told Observer in a statement. “Given the unique and justified sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center, it came to my mind to propose to remove the sculpture showcasing the flag of Saudi Arabia, or relocate it to a less sensitive location. But there is no way I can do such a thing as the flag of Saudi Arabia is entirely part of the G20 just like any other candy flag of this Candy Nations show.”

The installation was curated and installed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. When reached for comment, the organization pointed Observer to a December press release announcing the exhibit.

In its continuing efforts to transform the World Trade Center site into a dynamic space in Lower Manhattan, the Port Authority announced that beginning today it will showcase famous candy sculptures around the World Trade Center campus crafted by renowned French artist Laurence Jenkell,” reads the statement. “Each of the sculptures features flags from countries in the G20 summit, and the art work was commissioned by companies and organizations including the Chanel Foundation, the International Olympic Committee and Coca-Cola.”

Although the installation was originally created in 2011 to convey “an optimistic message of unity beneath external differences,” its placement at the World Trade Center raises questions given longstanding accusations directed toward Saudi Arabia in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In 2003, hundreds of families affected by the 9/11 terror attacks sued the Kingdom over its alleged involvement in harboring terrorism—given that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi.

Last March, a U.S. federal judge rejected Saudi Arabia’s motion to drop the charges.

This desecration needs to be destroyed!!! How dare they put a monument at that site, where their own citizens murdered thousands of people?!?

Ok; we need people who live nearby to take turns throwing bread crumbs down around for the next year or more. Feed the pigeons so they will sit on it.

Artwork with Saudi Arabia flag to leave Ground Zero

A sculpture that partly features the Saudi flag is being removed from the site of the 9/11 terror attack.

The artwork, Candy Nations, shows a series of large sweets wrapped in the flags of the G20 nations.

French artist Laurence Jenkell said she wanted to "celebrate mankind" with the work, which she first created in 2011.

But its proximity to Ground Zero in New York was criticised as insensitive. Some hold Saudi Arabia partly responsible for the 2001 attacks.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi nationals, but the kingdom has denied any role.

Following the complaints, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed it was moving all 20 sculptures from the current site in the World Trade Center complex.

"We have been in contact with the 9/11 Memorial and various stakeholders, and in full collaboration with the artist will relocate the exhibit from its current location," a spokesperson told BBC News.

"We believe this solution respects the unique sensitivities of the site and preserves the artistic integrity of the exhibit."

It will be moved later this week.

The sculpture, which has been shown in more than 25 countries, was installed in downtown Manhattan last month - where it was due to remain until 28 February.

A victims' group representing hundreds of families has been embroiled in a long-running battle to sue Saudi Arabia for damages.

Ms Jenkell, the artist, told US newspaper Observer that she originally wanted to "pay tribute to people of the entire world".

"Given the unique and justified sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center, it came to my mind to propose to remove the sculpture showcasing the flag of Saudi Arabia, or relocate it to a less sensitive location," she added.

"But there is no way I can do such a thing, as the flag of Saudi Arabia is entirely part of the G20, just like any other candy of this Candy Nations show."

Speaking to BBC News, Ms Jenkell said she was "deeply disturbed and saddened" by the reaction to her work, "especially given the reverence I have for this sacred site that embodies resilience even more than any other place in the world".

"I support families who have lost a loved one and I associate with their grief and pain," she said.

"Together with the World Trade Center and Port Authority we have decided to relocate the Candy Nations exhibit to JFK International Airport in a fashion that will support its intended purpose and meaning - peace, unity and love between mankind."

I don’t get the “ candy wrapper” part of this art

So it’s a total of 20 candies painted in National Flags, but what is the candyland explanation behind the art ???
    Why the hysteria?
City Should have left it up till 28 February when it is scheduled to be removed anyway

Wall Street had the defiant girl stays removed a few days ago !
How are Statues flags and Monuments so divicive and if they cause theses hysterical meltdowns, then the real victims need to up their prescription meds

They are doing their victory lap and claiming the land for islam. Those who approved the placement of this monstrosity need to be strung up for treason.

    Lest we forget:

The hijackers in the September 11 attacks were 19 men affiliated with al-Qaeda. 15 of the 19 were citizens of Saudi Arabia, and the others were from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Lebanon.
