Also, who will manage and handle the re-registration or even the commodities handouts (much less buy and distribute them?)that is exactly the sort of work "non-essential" employees do: the paperwork, eligibility reviews, verification phone calls, inspections of local offices (for fraud among other things), write up purchase orders etc etc.

And while there is plenty of "dead weight" on the food stamp/EBT rolls; a huge number of people on them are the elderly, the disabled and even parents of disabled kids.

Others really do use the program as it was intended to be used; I did and I think Doomer Doug is as well.

But setting up a new commodities program, especially given the state of US agriculture (aka Mono-culture) combined with what we now know about nutrition - I suspect there would be court cases the States would lose if they tried handing out cornmeal, beans and dried skim milk to feed a two-year-old like they did when my Mom was volunteering and helping out a family back then.

It was food that wouldn't be too bad for a healthy adult to keep the hunger pains away but totally reckless when try to feed a two-year-old and a frail elderly grandparent with cancer and diabetes.

I know exactly what the stuff was because my Mom "traded" to the family in exchange for full-fat milk, lean meat, juice, oatmeal etc.

When food stamps came in she took the grandmother to the grocery store and the women cried because now she could choose between a chicken and a pack of hamburger (which is the sort of choices food stamps were intended to help people make not between processed nuggets and a bag of potato chips).

    Have.

And they are dire to say the least. However, I think the point is this, just like many black communities, which is what we note first, but whites do it too, instead of laying around on the government dole, go get a job, go to rehab. (Native Indians are notorious drunks)

I don't know about out west, but here, and in the east, Casino's are rampant on Reservations. They make millions, and so long as you can prove 1/4 Indian Blood from that tribe, you get a check every month, a cut of the take. It's the Indian welfare program. I don't mind them doing that, go for it. What bothers me is they are still on the government take too. Or at least suspect so.

Whether it's a Reservation, or the Bitterman Project they need to get out, and get a job. They will live longer in the long run. Pull yourself up by your boot straps, and get out.

BTW you've heard of the Navajo Code Talkers? (note: this is the military and there is a job right there, and many do) Have you heard of the Steel Walkers? Most, or some, the sky scrapers in NY were built by Native Americans. Weren't afraid of heights.

Don't give them a pass just because the place looks dire. If it looks like Cleveland. Kick them in the butte, and tell 'em to get up. That easy pass is the reason they are in the shape they are in.

The Pilgrims adopted a plan when some of them were laying around and not helping. You don't work, you don't eat.

ACTUALLY I do live on a (former) reservation and about three miles from one of their mismanaged casinos. They spend vast amounts of money on buying land, hiring attorneys and flying half their management staff to conferences and meetings - and I could go on and on and on...NOT on actual benefits for their members. If we ever means-tested Native American aid (reparation) programs and audited their books, we might find billions that could actually do some real good.

Most of the managers are non-Indian.

Only the FBI is empowered to investigate crime on Indian land. Snd we know how astute their higher management was.

Trump knows about Indian casinos. He testified before Congress in the 90's. He hasn't gotten around to tribal issues yet, but he knows.

Hmm, it is starting to look like no SNAP benefits will be paid for February of 2019. If that is actually true, then a political firestorm will be unleashed. What this means for Doomer Doug is this. I will/should get my January SNAP, ie food snaps, as expected on January 4th. I may, or may not, get SNAP benefits on February 4th.

Next, I went on Medicare effective January 1st, 2019, and have my Medicare Part B Premium of $135.50 per month paid by Oregon's Medicaid Program. Social Security changed my payment date from the second Weds of each month, to the third day of each month. This means my last payment was on Weds, December 12th, and I "should" have got my next payment on January 9th, 2019. However since Oregon pays my Part B Premium, Social Security changed my payment date from the second Weds of each month, to the third day of each month. Ergo, Social Security just made the amount of time my December 12th SS payment increases from 4 weeks to nearly 7 weeks. Further, assuming I don't get my SNAP benefits, or I don't get my SS benefits on February 1st, I am totally screwed. At any rate, I plan to spend my SNAP benefits as fast as I can and hope for the best.

Government Shutdown: Food Stamp Money Is GONE At The End Of January

Without funding for a much-desired border wall, president Donald Trump doesnít seem willing to budge at all during negotiations for the upcoming budget battle. While Trump and Democrats both hold out, funding for the food stamp program will run out at the end of January.

The Department of Agriculture says if the ongoing government shutdown extends into February, there wonít be enough money for those who rely on the government welfare program known as food stamps.

At the heart of the government shutdown is Trumpís demand for more money to secure the southern border with Mexico, according to a report by Money and Markets. The president seeks $5 billion in funding to fulfill his campaign promise of building the wall on the southern border as a way to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States. The Democrats also have dug their heels in, saying they will not give any more than $1.3 billion, which is to be used for fencing and shoring up current security.

    https://www.usda.gov/media/press-rel...ederal-funding

Eligible households will still receive monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for January.

I am curious what this means for many nursing homes, care homes and even some hospitals that rely on government programs (or what goes to their residents) for supplies?

They may be fully covered but I know when the State of California shut down for a period of time; a lot of nursing homes didn't get their food funding and in quite a few cases they had to shut down and they left the residents in their wheelchairs either in the yard or in the ER's of local hospitals.

Some of those homes never reopened as the food funding crises and other funding failures started a cascade of unpaid bills that send them into bankruptcy.

I don't KNOW if that will happen to nurse homes due to a Federal Shutdown or not - especially since the entire government isn't shut down - I know a friend in a nursing home has to hand over her entire SSD check and if that didn't come in the home would collapse but I think that is funded.

Someone on the board here may know how this currently works.

Not that you ever have "enough" ammo, but there does come a point when you run out of storage space, and it becomes a game of diminishing returns. Plus, your spouse starts to get grumpy when she finds ammo stuffed in the pantry.

How about we give them enough rice and beans and freeze dried veggies for a year. Then give them a few rabbit cages, a breeding trio of rabbits and a book on how to raise and slaughter them for food. Give them a wide variety of seeds and a good book on gardening. After that they are on their own. They wanna eat they better work for it.

A little thread necromancy here, but has anyone considered wargaming this concept yet?

We have a reasonably good idea that EBT is going to be mostly shut down February 1. At least I think that's the case; some accounts suggest that some programs may keep going with state money, or others may still have time on them from Federal budgets.

Thought I heard someone suggest you should buy your groceries for the month on January 31 if there's no movement by then.

Knowing what we know so far, what would be the best way to proceed?

Yes, my shopping plan is for the 30th/ 31st if no movement is groceries, gas (and fill up reserves), and hit Lowe's for another 40 pounds of MgCl (sidewalk salt), sooner if the weather looks bad.

I'm planning for the worst, but I really think they will come to some sort of agreement next week.

Think black friday at a walmart only instead of junk electronics its food. Multiply the craziness by a factor of 11, throw in drug withdrawal from people not being able to sell their ebt for drugs, and add in screaming kids who are hungry.

EBT is now spread out through the 1st through the 15th here in TN. So you couldnt plan to avoid it.

That and we should consider the wider aspects. Normally, an EBT shutdown would mean Class Omega Chimp-Outs, but we're talking about February 1. General Winter has long since proven effective against such things, so will we see the full run of looting and burning?

Of course, General Winter hasn't exactly been at full strength this year--Weather Channel forecasts say we won't see a day with below-freezing highs for two weeks, and this in Southwest Lower Michigan--so should we consider riot protocol as well?

Since it's been brought to my attention, I think everyone should be prepared for the worst no matter where you live. Our Februaries can have some pretty warm days, and if it wasn't for EBTers, our town would shrink. Yes, I will stay away.

    Canned goods, baby, canned goods.

Nah, let them get the french toast makings. Maybe they'll invite me over for breakfast and I like french toast.
