I can't remember is that near the observatory?

Also, maybe the mods can change the thread title if we are going to cover both fires at the same time (which makes sense a lot of news reports now have both).

My heart is breaking. I lived in Paradise for ten years. I worked at the hospital for a couple of years, right after they has expanded. My former husband and his family are buried there; my daughter went to school and graduated there; and I lived off Pentz Road. I knew the town very well. When I worked as Interim Manager at the Chamber of Commerce, I knew many of the business owners or managers.

My heart goes out to those who not only lost their homes, but are now suddenly without jobs....all gone in hours....

This really upsets me. The home I spent mean years growing up years, burned to the ground last fall, when the Napa fires spread to my little town of Glen Ellen, CA. And, thousands of people were left homeless in the Santa Rosa area as well.

California wildfires leave Paradise ‘destroyed,’ force evacuees to abandon vehicles and run
    Greg Norman
    5-7 minutes

Residents fleeing a northern California town that officials say was “destroyed” by a fast-moving wildfire were suddenly forced to abandon their vehicles in traffic and run for their lives as “things started exploding” around them.

The scenes of devastation in Paradise, widely circulating on social media Friday morning, come as more than 75,000 homes have been ordered evacuated farther south in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, where two other blazes rage. The mandatory evacuation area includes the entire beachside community of Malibu and large swathes of land elsewhere in the state currently remain under a Red Flag warning, which Cal Fire says is “issued for weather events which may result in extreme fire behavior that will occur within 24 hours."

"Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed, it's that kind of devastation,” Cal Fire Capt. Scott McLean told the Associated Press late Thursday. He estimated the Camp Fire burned a couple of thousand structures to the ground in the town of 27,000 people, about 180 miles northeast of San Francisco. The size of the fire, he said Friday, is about 110 square miles.

"We were surrounded by fire, we were driving through fire on each side of the road," said police officer Mark Bass, who lives in Paradise and works in neighboring Chico. He evacuated his family and then returned to the fire to help rescue several disabled residents, including a man trying to carry his bedridden wife to safety. "It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us."

Other witnesses reported seeing homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement home engulfed in flames. Many residents who fled their homes didn't get very far very fast, as traffic was snarled on the gridlocked roads leading out of town. To make matters worse, as the flames approached, they sparked explosions and toppled utility poles.

"Things started exploding," said resident Gina Oviedo. "People started getting out of their vehicles and running."

Cars and trucks, some with trailers attached, were left on the roadside as evacuees ran for their lives, said Bass.

"They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours,” he added. As of Friday morning, many of the roads leading out of town were closed.

Capt. Koby Johns of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection told the AP Friday that about 2,000 buildings have already been destroyed as a result of the Camp Fire, but he described those numbers as "very elastic."

Johns added that heavy winds continue to drive the fire but winds are expected to ease Friday afternoon, which could give firefighters an opportunity to start containing it.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office also said an evacuation ordered was issued Friday for the small communities of Stirling City and Inskip, north of Paradise.

Chico police officer John Barker, along with his partner, said he evacuated several seniors from an apartment complex in the area on Thursday.

"Most of them were immobile with walkers, or spouses that were bed-ridden, so we were trying to get additional units to come and try and help us, just taking as many as we could," he said, describing the community as having "a lot of elderly, a lot of immobile people, some low-income with no vehicles."

Kelly Lee told the AP she called several shelters looking for her husband's 93-year-old grandmother, Dorothy Herrera, who was last heard from Thursday morning. Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband, Lou Herrera, left a frantic voicemail at around 9:30 a.m. saying they needed to get out.

"We never heard from them again," Lee said. "We're worried sick...They do have a car, but they both are older and can be confused at times."

In the midst of the chaos, officials said they could not provide figures on the number of wounded, but County Cal Fire Chief Darren Read said at a news conference at least two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

The fire in Paradise was reported shortly after daybreak Thursday. By nightfall, it had consumed more than 28 square miles and firefighters had no containment, McLean said.

Farther south in the Los Angeles region, the Woolsey and Hill Fires were whipped up Thursday evening by powerful winds that pushed them through canyons and to the edge of Camarillo Springs and Cal State Channel Islands, both of which were evacuated, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Fire officials said they expect those two fires to burn all the way to the ocean. Television reports showed several homes on fire in the Oak Park community, while authorities shut down the 101 Freeway in both directions at Camarillo Springs Road.

The Ventura County Fire Department said Friday morning a “significant” number of structures have been damaged or destroyed by the Woolsey blaze, which has grown to 8,000 acres with 0 percent containment.

Malibu, now under a mandatory evacuation order, has about 13,000 residents. Multiple schools and universities in the area canceled classes Friday as the fires spread.

Containment figures on the other two fires were not immediately available.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

#CampFire many fatalities on the fire. I just watched a video of one tiny spot and there were 4-5 cars burned along with the occupants. Very tragic indeed. I will not post the video. The numbers are going to be bad.

I read earlier in this thread about 150 people trapped inside a building in the Paradise area. Does anyone know if they were rescued? What about the hospital that was on fire? Did all the patients get out?

This is so frightening to watch!

Someone posted on Free Republic that their son worked at the hospital. All the patients were evacuated and he sheltered in the hospital basement bunker and was safe. I'm also wondering about all the people that sheltered at the K-mart and two other buildings. There were hundreds sheltering.

My Sister in law lives in Chico. We'd go up there every Thanksgiving just about and big on the list of go and see, for me, was the darling little town of "Paradise". Later, when I worked in the funeral services helping to design cemetery markers, all of the ceramic portraits for them came from a studio in Paradise.
I used to dream of being able to leave LA and move up there and work for them.

    I'm in tears.

It sounds like multiple fires are popping up and that they are not all related to the first fire. If that is true then it can only mean that some of these fires are no accident.

Well, there's always that one asshole who has to throw their lit cigarette butt out the window. When I was a kid we were in severe drought conditions (central illinois) and some a$$hole did just this, in the vehicle ahead of us. My dad and one other guy pulled over and put out the small fire that had already started with a blanket we always kept in the car.
People are quick to confuse and despise confidence as arrogance but that is common amongst those who have never accomplished anything in their lives and who have always played it safe not willing to risk failure.

Well we're still here this morning. Everything covered in ash. Twilight here at nearly noon. Firefighters managed to back burn last night after the winds calmed and they managed to stop the fires spread at the Chico city limits. It did manage to reach Hwy 99. 70,000 acres burned, 5% contained. Paradise is essentially gone. Burned to the ground.

Family friend in Paradise managed to save himself, family and neighbors by bulldozing a large pit on his property with high berms and everybody hunkered down as the fire burned through his place and right over the top of them. Quick thinking saved everyone.

We're still looking for friends and church members that lived in Paradise. Many cell towers gone, thus cell phones iffy and unreliable. Winds calm which is a good thing. Brother's house and other family members homes in Chico are OK. Fires got within a couple of miles, which is way too close for comfort.

Everyone here in a holding pattern and waiting to see what happens and which way this beast turns. Right now just standing by.

P.S. BIL is Deputy Sheriff and said Paradise is totally gone. Says it looks like hell on earth up there. Everything gone. Also thinks there will be a lot more dead people found once they can get in there. So much destruction. Lots of old folks that couldn't or wouldn't evacuate. Very sad. This is going to be a very nasty clean up when all is said and done.
We have done so much, with so little, for so long....We can now do anything, with nothing, forever.
