18 Big Fire Here - Paradise, CA Evacuated

I can see this fire from my house! Huge plumes of smoke. They have evacuated Feather River Hospital and all or Paradise from Pentz Rd., down to Skyway. We always said if a fire gets going in Paradise, it will be all over for the town. DH has a doctor's appointment tomorrow in Paradise, guess he won't be going to that. This is a big fire - worse than the ones we had here in the past 2 years. This is more heavily populated area, but lots of brush/grass and rough terrain.

Paradise evacuated as 5,000-acre wildfire explodes in Butte County, 2 CHP officers escape on foot

Fueled by winds of up to 50 mph, a 5,000-acre fire threatened the town of Paradise in Butte County Thursday morning, prompting the mandatory evacuation of large sections of the town of about 26,000 people.

At least two California Highway Patrol units had their vehicles disabled and surrounded by fire, having to escape on foot, according to live dispatch radio traffic available on Broadcastify.com. The dispatcher can be heard sending fire crews to assist the officers at about 9:45 a.m.

The fire and evacuations led to gridlock traffic on Skyway in Paradise, with dispatch radio traffic indicating multiple civilians had also abandoned their vehicles. Several fire officials reported flames were about 15 yards from major roadways about 9:45 a.m.

Two separate calls to dispatch by emergency responders reported that a woman in labor for a “high-risk” pregnancy was in a vehicle on the side of Clark Road in the evacuation zone.

No one covers what is happening in our community better than we do. And with a digital subscription, you'll never miss a local story.

Multiple structures were damaged or destroyed near a hospital on Pentz Road as of about 9:45 a.m., one dispatcher said, but the hospital remained undamaged at that time.

Scanner traffic also indicated reports of at least one burn victim being transported by EMS, and a “heavy impact on civilians” in Paradise.

Mandatory evacuation orders were in place for the communities of Pulga, Paradise and Concow, as well as all of Pentz Road east of Highway 70, as of 8 a.m., according to Cal Fire’s incident report page and a post by Butte County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook. Advisories are in place for zones 2, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 13, the Sheriff’s Office said.

An evacuation zone map can be found here.

A fire official told dispatch about 10:05 a.m. that vehicles were evacuating southbound Skyway toward New Skyway in the direction of Paradise, but that it was slow moving.

Responders can be heard telling dispatchers “Don’t know if we can get much more through,” and “It’s not looking good for people to get out” in reference to evacuations between 9:30 and 10:15.

Butte County officials said on Twitter that an evacuation shelter opened at Oroville Nazarene Church at 9 a.m. A second shelter will open at 10 a.m. at Neighborhood Church in Chico.

The blaze has been named the “Camp Fire,” because it originated near Camp Creek and Pulga roads near Feather River Canyon Thursday morning, Cal Fire said in a tweet.

Highway 191 is closed at Highway 70 due to the fire, Caltrans said on Twitter.

At 9:06 a.m., Cal Fire’s Butte Unit tweeted that the fire is “very dangerous,” and urged people to follow evacuation orders.

Bill Rasch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento, said wind gusts hit at least 50 mph Thursday morning and similar gusts could be possible throughout the evening. A red flag warning remains in effect until Friday morning, though Rasch said he expects the winds to begin to get calmer by Thursday evening.

Paradise is an incorporated town in the foothills east of Chico. It’s about an hour and 45 minute drive from Sacramento.

Butte is one of eight counties in which Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has announced a potential planned power shutoff event that could begin Thursday.

PG&E announced the possible shutoff earlier this week in light of forecasts for high winds and dry conditions creating high fire risk in a large portion of Northern California. National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning, in place Wednesday night through the end of the week.

PG&E spokeswoman Lynsey Paulo said that as of 8:25 a.m., the utility company’s emergency operations center based in San Francisco is aware of the Camp Fire burning in Butte County but had not yet given an order to shut off power.

An email update from PG&E at 6 a.m. Thursday indicated the utility had still not determined whether it would shut off power, and may not do so until late morning, as fire conditions were expected to be worst between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Sorry to hear that. Here in S. CA's. high desert the Santa Ana winds started blowing ice cold early this morning so I been on pins and needles watching the mountain range from my property. The humidity is single digits. Prayers for everyone's safety. It sounds terrible.

Late season fires and Santa Ana's can be real butt kickers.
A lot of equipment and people are off line, under repair or just unavailable.
There will not be a lot of competition for what resources are available.
    Prayers.

The problem is the wind, it's dry as a bone here. Wind is coming out of the north, we are south of the fire. We have the lake between us. Fires have been known to jump rivers and highways. If it jumps Hwy 70, we still have the lake and the dam in our way. They just finished the spillway and the bottom of the emergency spillway is all roller compacted cement - again in the way of our house. It's the town of Paradise that's in jeopardy. It will be just like the Santa Rosa fire/Clear Lake Fire/Redding fire. Devastating. Paradise has always been a fire trap, that's why we had no desire to live there.

Not close to Paradise, Ca now but it has turned the morning sky orange and filled the air with a wisp of smoke. No evacuation orders here yet but that may happen at any time. Getting my bug-out bag ready just in case. More later.

It's now over 5,000 acres burned and Paradise is being evacuated. Cars trying to leave Paradise are caught in traffic jams. Some people are leaving on foot due to not being able to get out due to traffic jams. Stupid ass people. All roads are blocked going into Paradise. Hwy 70 is closed, Hwy 32 is closed, Skyway is closed at Bruce Rd. No one is going in, people trying to get out. The Nazarene Church in Oroville, is usually the place to go for evacuations like this and many are headed that way. Butte College is being used as a command post for the fire. It's below Paradise by about 15 miles and South. Fairgrounds in Gridley are taking large animals. Haven't heard yet who who taking small animals like dogs and cats. I can see the plumes of smoke from our house and it's building, wind still blowing out of the north.

Firefighters are no longer focusing on saving structures, they are now prioritizing saving lives. Fire is essentially too erratic and extreme at this point to try to fight it. #CampFire

Thanks, guys, my "Native Elder Friend" and his wife are evacuating, this morning she posted the advisory about having the power turned off by PGE I posted in another thread.

She is now posting fire links but "this material is not available in your area" (a lot of newspapers just block the EU now, supposedly over privacy laws but really they just can't be bothered) so any posting here of updates is most appreciated.

I have several friends in Paradise but they are all in the same social group; I'm figuring if they get out they will all head towards the Bay Area where most of us originally met years ago.

This is really terrible, it is such a wonderful little town.

Waiting for confirmation but friends have now started a group facebook chat started by those of us still in the Bay Area - I think this is about my friend (whose wife may not be with him) he is safe with another of the group (an elderly former nun who also retired there) but I just confirmed with his wife.

Somehow, the Dems must be behind this.

This is looking like a lot of people will die.
Air tankers and rotors are useless in strong winds or when the smoke column drops.
You can't see where to make the drops and the drops have no accuracy.
Lookouts, Communications, escape routes, safety zones.
You find out how well you marked the escape route when the smoke column drops and you can or cannot see how well you flagged the escape route.
If anyone figures they are in the path of the fire, even if it is a few hours away, it make be time to go on vacation for a day or so.
