Looks very sad. I will be worrying about Panama City, FL.

Storm chaser @Jeff_Piotrowski says many people have not evacuated and he thinks high probability of big loss of life.

He says #HurricaneMichael will be close to Cat 5 and is reporting from large concrete parking garage

This storm isnít pushing into dry air and itís fast moving. Fast moving hurricanes rarely weaken in a low to no shear environment

WOW - it looks like the recon plane just recorded a 933 central pressure. This thing is still strengthening at a good clip.

This is the problem with overhyping hurricanes. People don’t believe them when it comes to a storm like this one.

He is almost the same pressure as Katrina at landfall

Edit - At landfall, hurricane-force winds extended 120 miles from the center, the storm's pressure was 920 millibars (27 inches of mercury), and its forward speed was 15 mph.

Warm Wis, thanks for the links. Do you know when is the expected landfall? I can't find it.

People in southern Georgia are going to be in for on evil ride after sundown. This will still have major hurricane force winds through at least Albany or Valdosta, depending on the final path.

Appreciate all the updates. I fly to Florida tomorrow night for several weeks, to be with DS and his family as they are expecting their new baby in a couple more weeks. So far looks like the Tampa area will be missed and I don't know yet if any of my flights south will be affected. My prayers are with those in the path - looks like it could be pretty rough in places.

It went around me so I wont be trying out the mini split AC system that I installed in the shelter last year. A few years ago every storm seemed to go through the panhandle of FL then they moved to central FL for a while.

  30. #150
It looks like Michael will hit central Georgia with strong tropical storm or weak hurricane force winds. One track indicates that it could hit the greater Atlanta area. Has the Atlanta metro area been hit by a hurricane or strong tropical storm in anyones' memory? I can imagine the havoc that would create if it caused extended blackouts. Fortunately, the little Doc1 Homestead in southern Mississippi seems safe for the time being. If anything, we might get a little breezy weather. Prayers up for all in Michael's path.

    Best regards
    Doc

This hurricane reminds me of hurricane Opal in 1995, Michael is taking a similar path. Opal was a cat 5 as it approached the panhandle and then quickly lost strength before it made landfall near Pensacola. Once on land, it followed the Chattahoochee River northward between Alabama and Georgia. It tore up Florida before it got here and then tore us up pretty good too, but Alabama got it worse than us. It spawned a lot of tornados, many people died. The overall property loss in Florida, Georgia and Alabama was over 4 billion dollars.

Michael seems to be tracking further east than Opal did so hopefully it won't be as bad here, but for those in its path, it will be bad enough.

I think these storms that spin up quickly in the Gulf and rapidly intensify over a fairly short journey are way more dangerous than many storms that take two weeks to cross the Atlantic and just run out of juice.

It's why fewer people have evacuated this time -- it's hard to predict intensity and this thing didn't give us much warning.

I remember Opal, too, and my former rental home in Auburn, Alabama, literally, got crushed by an oak tree that fell on the back part of the home. I had lived there up until June of that year and was in Columbus, Georgia when Opal hit in October.

Strong hurricanes need really really hot water in order for them to rapidly intensify and the water in the gulf is, practically, like a hot tub from about May until about November or even early December.
