BETHEL PARK (KDKA) — At Bethel Park High School on Thursday, an active shooter drill is scheduled to get underway during an extended third period class.

This drill will include the sound of gunfire, but blanks will be fired, not real bullets. School Police and Bethel Park Police will conduct the exercise.

Nanette Adams has a son who just this year enrolled in the High School. She and some other parents contacted KDKA-TV News saying they were concerned about the drill; more specifically, the fact that blanks were bring used.

“Students have been prepared; although, I have not been advised about what that preparation consists of,” Adams said. “My concern is for students who may have some sort of issue with anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, special needs students.”

The high school principal sent emails out to parents saying in part that the drill will include an alleged shooter in the building.

The police will be firing blanks to expose everyone to the sound of gunfire in the building.

In the email, he said the blanks will not be fired at anyone, however the sound may be heard throughout the school.

Adams said she thinks that school officials should have provided more information about the drill, and not only is she apprehensive about the psychological effects the drill could have on some of the students but also how neighbors might react to the sound of what they believe to be real gunfire.

“There are homes located nearby, and I have no idea if anyone who does not have a student in the district has been informed that this drill is going to be taking place,” Adams said. “There’s a lot of unknown variables of what could potentially happen if a homeowner nearby heard shots being fired off.”

Blanks don't sound like live rounds anyway. More libtard stupidity ….

Yeah, better to not know what gunfire sounds like, so if it happens for real they'll just freeze like deer in the headlights. /sarc

    True.

The common response to gunfire immediate to your person if directed at you is return fire but I doubt that will be in the "preparations" of the police.

Unless you're trained to be terrified of all guns, in which case the common response is to whimper, hide and tweet to the world, with a selfie if possible.

The danger is someone who thinks it is real, not a drill, and proceeds to actively stop the threat.

Take them to a shooting range so they can hear the sounds of life gunfire. While you are there, how about a few lessons on gun safety and how the use the gun, Yeah, I know, too easy.

Someone who's terrified of guns is hardly likely to take their kids to a shooting range.

Be better to put in a shooting range and let them shoot at school in competition and teach basic safety and handling, including handguns, shotguns and rifles.

Amen to both of the above.

When I was in grade school there were dinosaurs on the playground.

Nonetheless... once a month an officer from Fish and Wildlife visited the county schools and conducted firearms safety classes, conservation and provided the opportunity for anyone willing (above a certain age) to participate in skeet shooting with guns and ammo provided by the state. Some loved the opportunity some did not and simply did not participate. That is as it should be.

    We didn't ask
We got off the ( 5-6th grade ) school bus
And took the shotguns out to the farm fields

If our parents knew, or any neighbors told .... they never said anything

My pararescue firemen and SF neighbors say there are no adults under age 35

Used to be a kid count fend for itself at 18, but this generations that they see in trouble on a daily basis are totally helpless with no life skills

I like it. Doesn't help that gunfire sounds different inside buildings. Their idea might be beneficial. Blanks do sound different than live rounds, imo.

Any neighbor with any sense would know that a parking lot full of police cars should be an indicator of a drill.

The sheriff dept did this here. I have a friend who was the shooter for the dept. He said because the staff didn’t follow procedures he had many minutes and could have wiped out half the students and staff. In the debrief the main comment by staff was how fast it went down. The phone system locked up because of staff errors so it could have been bad if it had been real. The training showed many deficiencies it training and adherence to protocols. And so it goes train or not the results are on you.

Nonsense Training. Just gonna breed more xspurt opinions without real experience. We need real NRA : Johnny Appleseed type shooting programs.

This to off set the next generation of sideways pointing Glock bangers.
