Iranian diplomat suspected of plotting attack in France

BERLIN -- An Iranian diplomat is suspected of involvement in a bomb plot against an Iranian opposition rally in France. Assadollah Assadi was charged in Germany on Wednesday with activity as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit murder.

Assadi, a Vienna-based diplomat, is suspected of contracting a couple in Belgium to attack an annual meeting of an exiled Iranian opposition group in Villepinte, near Paris, German federal prosecutors said.

He allegedly gave the Antwerp-based couple a device containing 500 grams of the explosive TATP during a meeting in Luxembourg in late June, prosecutors said in a written statement.

Assadi was detained earlier this month near the German city of Aschaffenburg on a European warrant after the couple with Iranian roots was stopped in Belgium and authorities reported finding powerful explosives in their car.

In their statement, German prosecutors allege that Assadi, who has been registered as a diplomat at the Iranian Embassy in Vienna since 2014, was a member of the Iranian intelligence service "Ministry of Intelligence and Security," whose tasks "primarily include the intensive observation and combatting of opposition groups inside and outside of Iran."

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Iran of using its embassies to plot extremist attacks in Europe and warned Tehran that its actions have "a real high cost" after it threatened to disrupt Mideast oil supplies.

"Just this past week there were Iranians arrested in Europe who were preparing to conduct a terror plot in Paris, France. We have seen this malign behavior in Europe," Pompeo said Tuesday in an interview with Sky News Arabia during a short trip to the United Arab Emirates.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has called the allegations of a foiled extremist plot a ploy.

Belgian authorities also accuse Assadi of being part of the alleged plot reportedly aimed at setting off explosives at a huge annual rally of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq group, or MEK, in neighboring France, and want him extradited.

German prosecutors said their investigation wouldn't hinder Belgium's extradition request for the suspect.

Meanwhile, an Iranian who resides in Belgium and was detained in France agreed on Wednesday to be turned over to Belgian authorities, who had issued a European arrest warrant, a French judicial official told the Associated Press.

The suspect, identified as Mehrdad Arefani, 54, will be handed over within 10 days, and go before an investigating magistrate there, according to the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly in an ongoing case and asked not to be identified.

The MEK is an exiled Iranian opposition group based near Paris with some members, in particular, in Albania. The formerly armed group was removed from European Union and U.S. terrorism lists several years ago after denouncing violence and getting western politicians to lobby on its behalf.

Hummm….IMHO as soon as Trump gets done with our NATO "allies" and Putin, Pyongyang and Beijing are going to be in for a rude awakening....It's one thing to be screwing around with negotiations regarding timetables and inspection tours, it's a whole different matter when something as simple and trust building as KIA/MIA remains is being screwed with.

Taiwan seeking to buy M1A2 Abrams MBTs from US

Gavin Phipps, Taipei - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
    11 July 2018

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) has secured the support of the islandfs cabinet to purchase M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks (MBTs) from the United States to replace some of its older M60A3 and M48H CM11 MBTs.

A Taiwanese defence official was quoted by the China Times newspaper as saying on 9 July that the military will put aside USD990 million for the purchase of 108 M1A2s along with associated ammunition.

Reports say the funding will come from next yearfs defence budget.

The official said that if the sale was given the green light, the M1A2s would be deployed into two armoured battalions under the command of the Sixth Army Corps, which is based in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan.

Defence Minister Yen Teh-fa had told the islandfs Foreign and National Defense Committee in early May that the tanks are needed to ensure "Taiwan's combat readiness in the face of increasing threats of military action against the island by China".

Taiwan first asked the United States to provide M1A2 tanks nearly 18 years ago as part of a request made under the US administration of President George W Bush. Although that sale was approved in 2001, no further action was taken at the time.

Taiwan made similar requests in 2009 and again in 2015 when it requested up to four battalions' worth of surplus M1A2 tanks that had seen service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

However, the 2015 request was brought into question after lawmakers raised concerns about the operational feasibility of deploying Abrams MBTs in Taiwan due to the island's coastal wetlands and mountainous interior.

U.S. Navy Sub To Fire Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile Years After They Left The Force

The somewhat puzzling drill does coincide with a renewed interest in pairing anti-ship missile capabilities with America's attack submarine force.

    BY TYLER ROGOWAY
    JULY 11, 2018

s part of the many unique evolutions during the Navy's giant, biannual, multi-national naval exercise known as Rim Of The Pacific or RIMPAC, a U.S. Navy nuclear fast attack submarine will be fire a live UGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile at a target in the waters off of Hawaii. What's interesting is that Harpoon missiles were stripped from American submarines over 20 years ago, but the standoff range and flexibility that anti-ship missiles provide are once again becoming in-demand capability for America's submarine force and its surface fleet as well.

The U.S. Navy posted shots of a UGM-84 being loaded onto the Los Angeles class fast attack submarine USS Olympia (SSN-717), but no additional information was given beyond the fact that it would be used for a live-fire exercise during RIMPAC. Olympia is the second oldest submarine in the Navy's fast attack fleet, having been commissioned in 1984.

Today, U.S. Navy submarines rely on their torpedoes alone for anti-ship warfare, but there has been some talk of the Harpoon returning to the torpedo tubes of America's SSNs. Yet a clear plan to do so has not been put in place—at least as far as we know. The Block IV Tomahawk cruise missile has a secondary anti-ship capability though, which could negate the need for the much shorter-ranged (about 90 miles versus 900 miles) and less flexible Harpoon to be reintegrated into America's subsurface arsenal.

The Navy is also working on classified submarine-launched anti-ship missile systems that are far more exotic in nature than the Harpoon or the latest iteration of the Tomahawk. It's possible that this test is related to such a program and uses a Harpoon as a surrogate weapon to evaluate a particular tactical scenario. We also don't know the exact configuration of the Harpoon being used in the test but UGM-84D models are known to be compatible with the Los Angeles class.

It's also worth mentioning that surface and air-launched versions of the Harpoon still serve in the U.S. military and in dozens of militaries around the globe. But the Navy is slowly stepping away from the four-decade-old design and working on fielding stealthier and smarter anti-ship missiles types.

We will probably find out more about this particular part of the exercise after it occurs as live-fire portions of RIMPAC often get a big public affairs boost. This is particularly so if the weapon in question is being used as part of SINKEX drill where retired a Navy ship will be pummeled with various munitions until it succumbs to the sea.

Regardless, this is yet another sign that after decades of hibernation, the Pentagon is taking a whole new interest in anti-ship missiles as a result of a new era of anti-access and area-denial warfare riding peer-state competition on the high seas.

We'll let you know when we find out more information.

COULD THE $76 BILLION PER YEAR U.S. WAR IN AFGHANISTAN BE PRIVATIZED?

BY JASON LEMON ON 7/11/18 AT 4:16 PM
    1 Comment

    Video

The U.S. government spends about $76 billion per year on the war in Afghanistan, and the founder of private military company Blackwater said the country can significantly reduce that cost by turning to mercenaries.

“The U.S. administration is spending $76 billion a year in Afghanistan–that is much more, I think, than…the U.K. is spending on its entire defense budget,” Erik Prince, who is a former Navy SEAL and founded his company in 1997, told The Independent in an interview published Wednesday.

Prince, who is also the brother of President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy Devos, said that his proposal “will cost a fraction” of the current expenditures. “It will also save lives of armed forces personnel: American, British, Afghans and other allies.”

When Steve Bannon still had Trump’s ear, Prince pitched the idea to the administration, reportedly with support from Bannon and Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. However, national security adviser Lieutenant General HR McMaster, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary General James Mattis all opposed the idea.

Since then, McMaster and Tillerson have both been pushed out of the Trump administration. Prince claimed the White House may be more receptive to his controversial plan. Although he has not yet met with the president directly to discuss his strategy, Prince emphasized Trump’s consistent criticism of how much the U.S. spends on foreign conflicts.

Prince’s company was also mired in controversy in the past. In 2007, guards from his company killed 17 civilians in Baghdad, drawing significant outrage and criticism. Similar incidents also occurred at other points in Iraq and in Afghanistan as well, leading the company to rebrand and change its name.

The pitch also comes as things in Afghanistan look increasingly positive. On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo paid a surprise visit to the country and gave a press conference alongside Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Pompeo hailed “progress” and also expressed his “hope” that a lasting peace deal will materialize soon between the government and Taliban fighters.

The secretary explained that many of the Taliban cannot “win on the ground militarily.” However, the U.S. top diplomat also pointed out, “There's still a great deal of work to do.”

After 17 years of conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion to remove the Taliban from power, both rebel and government forces expressed their readiness for an end to the fighting. During the final days of Ramadan in June, a ceasefire was implemented that saw both sides celebrating in the streets.

Pompeo credited Trump’s hardline stance as pushing the U.S.-designated “terrorist group” to consider dialogue as opposed to continued fighting. The president’s strategy "sends a message to the Taliban that they cannot wait us out,” the secretary said.

Prince remained optimistic that Washington could still implement his strategy moving forward. “I heard President Trump read about my plans in the Oval Office and told McMaster that he preferred it to his plans,” he told The Independent, saying that Pompeo also showed interest.

“I have spoken to [Pompeo], he was interested in what I had to say,” Prince said, also adding that Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton, who took up his post in April, will be interested.

“Looking at [Bolton’s] background, he would not want, I think, to stick with a conventional strategy which is not working,” Prince said. “I will certainly be taking this matter further in the next few months.”

Islamic State claims responsibility for Saudi checkpoint attack: IS newspaper

    Reuters Staff
    1 Min Read

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamic State has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack on a security checkpoint in Saudi Arabia, the group’s online publication said on Friday.

A Saudi security force member and a foreigner were killed in the attack in Buraidah, a city in Qassim Province north of the capital Riyadh, the Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday.

Islamic State said in its Al-Naba newspaper that three of its fighters were killed in an attack on police forces in Buraidah. It did not provide evidence to support its claim.

Qassim, a heartland of the kingdom’s ultra-conservative Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam, is one of the most conservative pockets of the country.

Islamic State claims suicide bombing at election rally in Pakistan

    BY THOMAS JOSCELYN | July 13, 2018 | tjoscelyn@gmail.com | @thomasjoscelyn

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a devastating suicide bombing carried out in Mastung, Baluchistan earlier today.

The group’s Amaq News Agency first issued two brief statements on the attack, noting in the second that approximately 80 people had been killed. The Islamic State subsequently released a third, longer statement on the bombing, as well as a picture of its supposed “martyr.” The bomber was identified as Abu Bakr al-Pakistani (pictured above).

The death toll has risen to more than 120 people, with dozens more wounded, according to Pakistani officials who briefed Agence France-Presse (AFP).* It is one of the worst bombings in recent memory inside Pakistan.

The so-called caliphate says one of the victims was a “Pakistani intelligence” official who was participating the elections. It appears that the group is referring to Siraj Raisani, a candidate for elected office in Pakistan. AFP reports that Raisani, “who was running for a provincial seat with Balochistan Awami Party (BAP),” perished as he was being transported to the hospital for treatment of his wounds.

The Islamic State’s Wilayah Khorasan (or Khorasan “province”) grew in Afghanistan and Pakistan by poaching mid-level commanders and fighters from the Taliban and other jihadi groups. While this undoubtedly fueled the Islamic State’s initial growth in the region, it has also led to conflicting claims of responsibility for operations in the past. At times, more than one group has claimed credit for the same operation. US officials have also blamed the Taliban’s Haqqani Network for attacks claimed by the Islamic State.

The confusion may be due, in part, to the fluid nature of the underlying jihadi networks, with personnel shuffling between organizations.

Still, Wilayah Khorasan continues to operate in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, claiming a string of operations in both countries in recent weeks. Last month, the self-declared caliphate’s representatives attacked both the Taliban and Afghan government officials, among others.

Sunni jihadists have carried out at least two attacks on election-related events in recent days. On July 10, a Pakistani Taliban suicide bomber targeted a rally held by the secular Awami National Party in Peshawar, killing and wounding dozens of people.

Both the Pakistani Taliban and the Islamic State’s arm in South Asia reject any participation in democratic elections, declaring them to be impermissible under their interpretation of Islamic law.

In recent days, the Pakistani Taliban released a booklet condemning elections. The treatise was compiled by one of its ideologues, Khalid Haqqani. Separately, Haqqani has answered questions surrounding the elections, forbidding anyone from participating in them. The Pakistani Taliban also warned civilians to stay away from any election-related locations.

The Islamic State has also repeatedly threatened Muslims participating in elections around the world. On Apr. 22, a Wilayah Khorasan suicide bomber blew himself up at a voter registration center in Kabul. More than 100 people, including women and children, were casualties of that attack.

The Islamic State identified victims of the Apr. 22 bombing in Kabul as Shiite “polytheists” and, therefore, condemned them to death on sectarian grounds. The group used similar language in attempting to justify the heinous bombing in Mastung earlier today.

*Note: The casualty figures were updated after initial publication, as the death toll has steadily climbed.

Afghan forces suffer heavy casualties in Kunduz

    BY BILL ROGGIO | July 12, 2018 | admin@longwarjournal.org | @billroggio

The Afghan military “suffered heavy casualties” during a Taliban assault in a contested district in the northern province of Kunduz overnight. The attack was reportedly executed by the Taliban’s Red Unit, the group’s shock troops who are better trained than the average fighter.

The Taliban launched its attack on a military base and security checkposts in the district of Dasht-i-Archi late last night, the group stated on its official website, Voice of Jihad.

“[A] military base and 15 enemy check posts have been overrun, killing 72 puppets and leaving several others seriously wounded as well destroying 4 tanks and 4 ranger pickups,” the Taliban claimed.

Afghan officials confirmed the fighting in Dasht-i-Archi and noted that “heavy clashes are still underway,” Khaama Press reported. At least 30 soldiers were reportedly killed and 17 more wounded. An unnamed Afghan official told Khaama Press that 60 soldiers were killed or wounded.

Kunduz province has been a major focus of Taliban operations for the past four years. The Taliban overran Kunduz City and held it for two weeks in late 2015, and took over half of the city one year later in 2016. The Taliban was able to achieve this by dominating the districts outside of the city. Currently, the Taliban controls one district and contests the other six, according to an ongoing study by FDD’s Long War Journal.

    Red Unit in Kunduz

An Afghan official told Khaama Press that the attack in Dasht-i-Archi was carried out by the Red Unit, the Taliban’s version of special forces that operates throughout Afghanistan and is often at the tip of the spear of assaults on district centers, military bases and outposts. The Red Unit operates more like shock troops rather than traditional Western special forces.

Afghan military officials confirmed the existence of a Taliban “Special Forces Unit,” also called the Red Group, Danger Group, and Blood Unit, in the summer of 2016. An Afghan Army special forces commander said the group uses “advanced weaponry, including night vision scopes, 82mm rockets, heavy machine guns and US-made assault rifles.”

Foreign fighters are known to operate within the ranks of the Red Unit. On Feb. 27, the Afghan military captured Abdul Wadood, a German national who advised Mullah Nasir, the commander of the Red Unit.

The Taliban has touted the existence of “special forces,” and has promoted its training camps as well as units in the field.

While the Taliban’s Red Unit certainly isn’t trained to the same standards and proficiency as US special operations forces, it has proven to be effective on the battlefield against its Afghan adversaries.
