BREMERTON, Wash. — A suspicious package has been discovered near the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard gate in Bremerton.

The incident is affecting the 1:30 p.m. departure of the Bremerton to Seattle ferry.

Right now only walk-ons are being allowed, according to an official with the Washington State Ferries.

Vehicles currently in the terminal are being escorted out by the Washington State Patrol. After that, no vehicles will be allowed on the ferry.

Motorists are also unable to access the terminal due to road closures.

Just after 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Bremerton police said the ferry terminal was closed due to an incident involving a person placing what appeared to be an explosive device just inside the Bremerton PSNS gate.

Employees at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton are told to shelter in place.

The area of Pacific Ave south to the ferry terminal entrance is shut down for an incident involving a person placing what appears to be an explosive device just inside the Bremerton PSNS gate. Stay clear of the area for now.

Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton military personnel and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard employees are sheltering in place after a suspicious package was discovered near the base around 11:45 a.m this morning.

The Bremerton Police Department reports a person was seen placing what appeared to be an explosive device just inside of the Bremerton gate to enter the shipyard.

Navy security forces, local law enforcement and Navy explosive ordnance disposal personnel are on scene, said Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Jake Chappelle.

Bremerton police blocked off downtown streets while the incident is investigated.

All base personnel have been advised to go indoors, shut their windows and doors as well as turn off fans, heat and air conditioning units in their buildings.

Law enforcement has shut down Pacific Avenue running south to the ferry terminal and are advising people to stay clear of the area for the time being.

Washington state Department of Transportation spokesman Justin Fujioka said the 1:30 p.m. Washington State Ferries sailing from Bremerton will board only walk-on passengers due to restricted access to the ferry terminal.

Vehicles on the ferry currently enroute to Bremerton from Seattle have been cleared to exit the vessel.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Sea/Brem - Correction - Bremerton route out of service until further notice
Correction: The Kitsap Transit Fast Ferry Seattle/Bremerton route is out of service.

The M/V Hyak will reroute Bremerton-bound traffic and passengers loaded in Seattle for a late Seattle 12:20 pm sailing to Southworth. Kitsap Transit will provide bus service at the Southworth terminal.

The Seattle/Bremerton route is out of service until further notice due to law enforcement activity near the Bremerton terminal. This cancels the Bremerton 1:30 pm and Seattle 1:30 pm and other departures. Updates will occur as more information becomes available. Alternate routes between Seattle/Bainbridge and Fauntleroy/Southworth are advised. Foot passengers are also advised to consider the King County Water Taxi Vashon route to connect with WSF service between Vashon and Southworth.

Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton military personnel and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard employees have spent hours sheltering in place after a suspicious package was discovered near the base around 11:45 a.m this morning.

A portion of the base has been cleared of the shelter in place warning as of 2:20 p.m. and State Street Gate and Farragut Gates are now open to outbound traffic, a Navy official said.

Those east of Pier Six inside the shipyard are still advised to shelter in place. The pedestrian entrances at the Bremerton Gate and Burwell tunnel remain closed to both inbound and outbound traffic.

Personnel in that area are advised to go indoors, shut their windows and doors as well as turn off fans, heat and air-conditioning units in their buildings.

The Bremerton Police Department reported a person was seen placing what appeared to be an explosive device just inside of the Bremerton gate to enter the shipyard.

Navy security forces, local law enforcement and Navy explosive ordnance disposal personnel are on scene investigating, said Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Jake Chappelle.

The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management has advised residents who live within a one-block radius of the shipyard's northern fence toward the ferry terminal to shelter in place as well. Residents should close their doors and windows and stay away from them until the situation is resolved.

Bremerton police have blocked off downtown streets while the incident is being investigated, including Pacific Avenue running south to the ferry terminal. People are advised to stay clear of the area for the time being.

Washington State Department of Transportation spokesman Justin Fujioka said the 12:20 p.m. Washington State Ferries sailing from Seattle to Bremerton has been diverted to Southworth and passengers will be bused to their destination.

The Bremerton to Seattle route will be out of service until law enforcement can make a final determination on whether the package poses a threat.

Kitsap Transit has suspended foot ferry service to Port Orchard and fast ferry service to Seattle as well. The Bremerton foot ferry dock will be closed during the investigation of the incident.

Transit's buses will be staging at Fifth Street and Washington Avenue instead of at the Bremerton Transportation Center until further notice.

Navy Region Northwest spokeswoman Sheila Murray said this morning's incident was unrelated to a scheduled security exercise held at Bremerton's Naval Avenue Gate this morning from 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

An individual was taken out of the shipyard this morning by ambulance for a serious medical condition, but for a reason unrelated to the ongoing investigation, a Navy official said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Due to the temporary closure of the Seattle/Brem route caused by law enforcement activity near the Bremerton terminal, there is an estimated 1 hour wait for drivers departing Seattle for Bainbridge. Vehicle space for 3p Seattle/ Bain is full. Next Seattle to Bain is at 3:50p
