Trump says South Korea will make major announcement on North Korea

By Jeremy Diamond - March 8, 2017 5:52 pm ET

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday that South Korea will make a "major announcement" concerning North Korea at 7 p.m. ET.

It was not immediately clear what the South Korean announcement would entail, but it came after a South Korean delegation came to the White House to brief officials on its most recent talks with North Korea -- the most significant talks between the two countries in more than a decade.

Trump has expressed an openness to dialogue with North Korea, but the Trump administration has said North Korea must first take concrete steps toward denuclearization.

"All options are on the table and our posture toward the regime will not change until we see credible moves toward denuclearization," a senior administration official told reporters on Tuesday. "What we are looking for is concrete steps toward denuclearization."

I'm sure it's renewed talks. It will ultimately lead to nothing. China and the Norks ultimately, want ALL us forces out of SK and a stop to war games. If they don't get their way, they will sink another SK warship. That's how this goes right?

    S. Korea, U.S. to make 'major announcement' on N. Korea

    2018/03/09 07:41

(ATTN: UPDATES with announcement plan in paras 1-4; CHANGES headline)

WASHINGTON, March 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States plan to make a "major announcement" on North Korea on Thursday, officials said, after the two sides met over South Korean officials' recent meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, will hold a joint press briefing with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders at the White House at 7 p.m. (local time), a South Korean official here said.

The announcement comes after Chung briefed his U.S. counterpart, H.R. McMaster, on the outcome of his trip to Pyongyang on Monday and Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters in an impromptu visit to the White House briefing room there would be a "major announcement" from the South Korean side, according to news reports.

Kim reportedly offered to discuss his country's nuclear weapons program with the U.S. and promised to stop all nuclear and ballistic missile testing while talks were under way.

At the White House, Chung was joined by Suh Hoon, chief of the National Intelligence Service and one of the five members of the presidential delegation to Pyongyang.

The U.S. side included Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, according to the State Department. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is currently on a trip to Africa.

Chung has said he will deliver a special message from Pyongyang to Washington.

The SK rep will announce that he saw Kim Jong Un take an extra scoop of ice cream the last time they met. Plus his scoop of ice cream was bigger than any scoop of ice cream Trump ever had.

North Korean Humour is like food. Not everyone gets it.

    No seriously

I think the South Koreans are going to announce that NK is longer a threat. They figured out he isn’t tall enough to push the launch button.

#DPRK leader Kim Jong Un is committed to stopping nuclear and missile testing and to meet with @POTUS, according to @FoxNews which cites a senior U.S. official.

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis says he’s “cautiously optimistic” on North Korea but adds there’s been “optimism before.” Asked if he’s seen evidence North Korea won’t stop its nuclear proliferation & how it affects military planning/drills, he replied “It’s a good question”

They don't know where the meeting will be yet according to the news.
The press are tossing around the possibilities of location now.
Trump will damn sure not go to N Korea and that only leaves South Korea or right on the border on the DMZ

I wonder if they will construct a whole new room for the meeting and argue about the table and who sits where like they did a long time ago.

4 President Trump agrees to meet with Kim jong un by may

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/whi...ong-un-n855051 WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump agreed on Thursday to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un by May after Kim pledged to refrain from further nuclear tests and move toward denuclearization, according to South Korean officials.

The surprise announcement was made by South Korean National Security Advisor Chung Eui-Yong in a short statement outside the White House. The White House later said no firm timetable was set.Chung said that in recent talks with South Korea, Kim Jong Un "expressed eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible."

A senior administration official said the sentiments from Kim were conveyed verbally to Trump during a briefing in the Oval Office at the White House on Thursday, denying the existence of a physical letter from the South Korean envoy to the president, which was reported earlier.

The White House confirmed that Trump would accept Kim's invitation to meet, but a senior administration official told reporters on a call after the announcement that "at this point, we're not even talking about negotiations."

"What we're talking about is an invitation by the leader of North Korea to meet face to face with the president of the United States," the official said. "The president has accepted that invitation."

Speaking anonymously, the official offered insight into why the administration would take the historic step toward meeting: Because of Kim's consolidated decision-making power in the regime, the senior official said "it made sense to accept an invite to meet with the one person who can actually make decisions" instead of continuing with the "long slog of the past."

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday that the plan to hold talks with Kim was "a decision the president took himself" and it was "something he's had on his mind for quite some time."

Just a day earlier, Tillerson had said that "in terms of direct talks with the United States ... we're a long way from negotiations." What changed, he added Friday, was that Kim's posture had shifted "in a fairly dramatic way" and "in all honesty that came as a little bit of a surprise to us."

In an earlier statement from press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Thursday, the White House said it looked forward to "the denuclearization of North Korea."

"In the meantime, all sanctions and maximum pressure must remain," Sanders said.

While the South Korean national security advisor set a May deadline during his announcement Thursday night, a senior administration official was more vague — telling reporters the time and place were "yet to be worked out," but that the meeting will come "in a matter of a couple months."Hours before the announcement, Trump dropped by the White House press room to hint at a major announcement to come, suggesting that he was supportive.

The South Koreans were at the White House Thursday to brief National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and other top officials on recent talks with the North Korean regime. No sitting American president has ever met with a North Korean leader — although former President Jimmy Carter did visit the country in 1994 — and the meeting comes after months of blustering between the two unpredictable leaders.

Several GOP leaders supported Trump's decision to accept the invitation, adding that the meeting came as the result of a firm no-nonsense stance against North Korea.

"I do believe that North Korea now believes President Trump will use military force if he has to," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina via Twitter on Thursday night. "The worst possible thing you [Kim] can do is meet with President Trump in person and try to play him," he added.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Ed Royce, R-California, said "Kim Jong Un’s desire to talk shows sanctions the administration has implemented are starting to work. We can pursue more diplomacy, as we keep applying pressure ounce by ounce," in a statement following the announcement.

Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said the upcoming meeting should be "the beginning of a long diplomatic process" adding that Trump "must abandon his penchant for unscripted remarks and bombastic rhetoric to avoid derailing this significant opportunity for progress," in a statement on Twitter.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also said in a statement that sanctions were having an impact. "Skepticism and caution are critical as these discussions continue," he said.Trump has called Kim "little rocket man," and threatened the country with destruction for its nuclear tests; Kim has called Trump a "mentally deranged dotard," and has threatened to rain nuclear fire on the West.

But Chung credited Trump's "maximum pressure strategy" for forcing Kim to the diplomatic table.

Earlier this week, Pyongyang signaled its willingness to hold talks with Washington on denuclearization, saying it would suspend nuclear tests while talks are underway.

Asked about the developments this week, Trump expressed optimism, saying he believed overtures from the North Koreans were "sincere," attributing them to "very, very strong" sanctions and increased pressure from China.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, said in a statement after the announcement that it "commends South Korea’s leadership in achieving history dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea, which is the only pathway to nuclear disarmament in the face of fire and fury."

The statement from the group's executive director, Beatrice Fihn, continued, "We urge both North Korea and the United States to join the majority of countries in pursuing permanent denuclearization through The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons."

Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe, warned on local television that "until North Korea takes actual steps towards a complete inspection of their nuclear weapons and missiles, and their irreversible abandonment, this will not sway the absolute position of Japan and the United States that we will continue apply the greatest amount of pressure." Trump and Abe spoke by phone to discuss the situation, the White House said.

Kim is playing for time. He just delayed any potential military response till May. He just got an additional two plus months to perfect his long range ICBM strike ability. The Great Kreskin predicts that after this meeting happens, it will all be sound and fury signifying nothing. Kim wants his nukes. Kim is going to get his nukes. Kim is quite willing to string things out while he continues his nuclear buildup. At this point, he can sit back and spend the time actually building the missiles. He has had more than enough live fire tests to verify both the range, guidance systems and exploding impact.

When you are dealing with a Marxist, and you see him walking towards you with one hand out to shake, and the other behind his back, you may be certain the hand behind his back has a knife in it.

Trump is buying us time to finish our preparations before the end. It is also the case that with Syria now going tactical he wants to quiet down a potential second front.

Trump should prepare himself before the meeting by saying goodbye to his family and preparing for possibly not coming back.
During the meeting, the US nuclear forces need to be on high alert. SSBNs at missile stations ready to launch, Stealth bombers in the air and Minuteman silos ready to launch. The entire world should all be aware of this.
A 130 should be orbiting 2 minutes away, ready to drop a MOAB if fatman thinks he can try anything and get away.

Funny, but I believe that Tillotson has been in Africa during all of this. For his second term Trump needs a new Sec of State.

The other aspect of this when Kim plays the same games as his father and grandfather there won't be any issues with regards to the "robust response".

Well, I guess we'll see who's right about that fat little sociopath...

Is he truly just a power hungry megalomaniac who is sane enough to realize that tweaking the tail of a tiger (president Trump and the USA) is a really stupid thing to do...

Or is he the actually insane nutcase who is out if touch with reality enough that he really DOES believe he can win respect and survive by taking on Trump head to head?

I hate for the President to take the risk of going into the little freaks territory, but I suspect our military will be coordinating closely with the Secret Service and Trump's private security to make certain nothing happens.

And I'm certain Lil' Kim isn't the first sociopath Trump has dealt with in his many years of business dealings... at least 10% if high level executives are sociopaths. Trump won't trust him one bit, but I know that if it can be done, this is the man to convince that short freak tgat it's in his best interests to stop starving his citizens and start behaving in the way the respected, civilized leaders and countries do. And if he can leave Kim with some sense if dignity (no matter how fake and costumey the rest if the world knows it to be, he just may pull off the diplomatic coup of a century.

And if it turns out that there will be no compromise possible, I believe our military will then execute Plan B...

Goodness. Probably two of the top ten men in the whole world who have legitimate fears of assassination. Every stinkin' day is kinda amazing lately . As far as the assassination attempt on the russians, I thought that man had some link to the dossier and was thus another on Hil's hit list.

Nixon ended Vietnam. Reagan ended the cold war with Russia. Trump will end the Korean War, unless extraneous factors, that we can't factor in yet, interfere. Rule of thumb - Democrats start great wars, Republicans end them.

Why? I've thought on this, and probably because people tend to believe that Republicans, such as Nixon, Reagan, and Trump, have the best interest of the American people in mind.

Glad things are progressing as expected (follow Scott Adams). Wish them well. We'll need all our focus on the mideast and responding to weather-related problems in the near future (next 5 years).

God bless them all, even the rats and dirty rats.

NK and the Deep State are joined at the hip. Common purpose to destroy President Trump anyway possible. I would be weary of a little fat boy double. They may consider the talks not held in Korea but maybe in the Philippines. Places like the old Subic Bay Naval Air could be hardened. Nobody in their right mind can trust them but we are going to have to find out if we can resolve this situation without mushroom clouds.

Everyone should note that the South Korean leader made his press announcement in the US entirely alone.
No US official was accompanying him.

This is good. For the President or any US official to be there would have made the US seem too eager as if they were dealing from a weakened position.
Posturing and appearances are very important in these negotiations. You must never seem weak or anxious.
Trump is playing this right. There is still a very large chance that this proposed meeting will go nowhere and result in nothing but time gained by the Norks.
I don't think Trump will allow these negotiations to go on for that long though.

I don't think Trump will allow these negotiations to go on for that long though.

This peace overture happens just as North Korea achieves the ability to send nuclear missiles all the way to the United States. Hmmmm... Something smells here and it ain't cheese.

I believe Kim wants power and wealth and prestige and luxury.

If he (Kim) ends the korean war and reunifies korea he will have all of those things (even if we have to let him skim off the top of our economic aid to the former north korea wink wink).

Nuclear missiles buy him fear and may even keep other powers at bay but they will not let him travel the world to be glad-handed by other world leaders all while enjoying the finest accommodations the world has to offer ..... or he could just be a CIA agent bent on destroying President Trump.

It doesn't matter to me that he won't get a Nobel Peace Prize from a Communist, Social Justice entity.....Trump will get the accolades from thos of that that voted, believe in and love him.
