Thread: Tomato starts

    Tomato starts

They are looking great under the led lights. What we did was use soiless mix to the trays, used half strength mircle grow to water. The light is a 360 watt led lamp. Not "virtual watts" like so many cheap imports. I leave the lamp on 24 hours.

The starts have first leaves forming and they are 9 days from seed.

I hope to follow the process till the first tomato.

interesting to watch these Stan. I was under the impression that using a fertilizer at this stage of the game would result in very leggy plants - I'm interested to see how these do

who's light are you using and how far off the trays are you? to be getting first leaves at 9 days is impressive - assume you are also on heat mats?

also - my practice is to let the starts "rest" for between 4-6 hrs in darkness. VERY INTERESTED to see how these do.

The lamps are home made. The bulbs are... 5630 led strip lights 3 lenghts of red 3 lenghts of blue. Both attached to a 2x4 hard board white board with a bit of wood for support. I use a 30 amp regulated power supply. The lamp sits 12 inches up on 2x4 legs No heat mats.

The strips are cut to 4 foot where indicated and put alternating at 1 inch.
I used a bit of wire and solder to connect it all. Be sure to use thin wires to each strip. Other wise they will pull off.

My son built me a lamp almost exactly like that, except he made a curved base for the lights, so the lighted area is a bit larger. It's nowhere near as intense as my 90 watt LED commercial light (which truly is blinding... if I set it up in a room, I need to wear sunglasses while tending the plants.

The combination of the red and blue light really GROWS amazing plants, and the electric savings compared to using fluorescents for the same lumens/candlepower is significant.

I have moved mine outside for now but still in their trays. Got a cold snap coming in so may have to temporarily bring them back in. Still have about a month before they can go outside in the ground safely!

Legginess in seedlings is more a function of light intensity than fertilizer. Keeping the lights just above the plants is key. Those seedlings are perfect.
