    Romney Just Made it Official

Mitt Romney made it official Friday: He's running for U.S. Senate.

The former governor of Massachusetts and 2012 Republican nominee for president released a video announcing his campaign to replace Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the longest-serving Senate Republican who is set to retire.

In the video, Romney contrasts Utah values with Washington's misplaced priorities.

    — Mitt Romney (@MittRomney) February 16, 2018
"Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington," Romney says in the video.

Unlike Washington, Utah has balanced budgets, he explains. Utah "welcomes legal immigrants," while "Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion."

That segment led some to believe that he was distancing himself from the policies of President Trump, who announced a temporary ban on immigrants from six Muslim-majority nations last year and has had some controversial things to say about countries like Haiti and El Salvador. While Trump was still a presidential candidate, Romney offered a harsh rebuke of him. In his 18-minute speech, he called Trump a "con man," a "fake," and other unflattering names.

In his campaign video, Romney also reminds voters about how he helped organize the successful 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Romney was the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. He lost the 2012 election to President Barack Obama.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who ran as Romney's running mate in 2012, released a supportive statement.

“This is a terrific day for the United States Senate," he said. "I was honored to join Mitt Romney on the national ticket in 2012 and couldn't be happier that he's running for this seat. Our party and our country are always better off when Mitt is engaged, and I know that he will put his unparalleled experience, conservative leadership, and lifetime of service to work for Utah in the U.S. Senate. Janna and I adore Mitt and Ann. His campaign has my unwavering support, and the people of Utah will be getting an accomplished and decent man when they make him their next Senator."

Living in Utah I find that he is just another worthless politician. He doesn't live here, and shouldn't be allowed to run. The problem here the voters do not get to vote on who is running. Everything is done on the caucus system. In the past I have attended a caucus and found out that the system is totally rigged by the good old boys.

Utah GOP Chairman: Romney Is Pulling A Hillary Clinton With This Senate Run

    Matt Vespa
    Posted: Feb 14, 2018 4:04 PM

Well, it’s official: Mitt Romney will be running for U.S. Senate seeking to fill the vacancy that will be left by outgoing incumbent Republican Orrin Hatch. The announcement will be made via video tomorrow around 11 A.M. EST (via CBS News):
BREAKING: AP Sources: Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney plans to announce Utah Senate campaign Thursday.
    — The Associated Press (@AP) February 14, 2018
Three people with direct knowledge of the plan tell the Associated Press Romney will formally launch his campaign in a video on Thursday. His first public appearance as a Senate candidate is scheduled for Friday in Utah. The people who provided the information asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about Romney's plans in advance.

A source close to Romney who is familiar with the announcement said the video message will be released on social media at roughly 9 a.m. local time, 11 a.m. EDT.

Romney, the source said, doesn't intend to tap his vast network of donors at this point because he wants a mostly retail-focused campaign. He will not, the source said, be seeking Republican dignitaries from Washington to help him in the campaign trail.
Romney will probably win in a landslide. Yes, the GOP will hold the seat, but not everyone is happy about it. Utah’s Republican Party chairman is certainly not enthusiastic, likening the former Massachusetts governor’s second swing at public life to Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate run. He also noted that Romney has no real ties to the state, and that him jumping in is keeping better candidates out of the running (via The Salt Lake Tribune):
The Utah Republican Party chairman blasted Mitt Romney’s anticipated Senate run, hitting him for “essentially doing what Hillary Clinton did in New York” — campaigning in a state he hasn’t spent much time in.

“I think he’s keeping out candidates that I think would be a better fit for Utah because, let’s face it, Mitt Romney doesn’t live here, his kids weren’t born here, he doesn’t shop here,” Rob Anderson told The Salt Lake Tribune in an interview.

Still, Anderson, who is generally seen as a moderate voice within the Utah GOP, suggested that Romney is just “using name recognition to win a seat.”

“I have two questions for Mitt. First of all, why? And how do you expect to represent Utah when you don’t live here?”
    Oh boy.

He had his chance - and blew it. Give someone else that chance now.

And with a Caucus system he will have all the challenge a DNC Like Primary run can offer for the seat.

Yunno - the one where the party elite get to decide who runs and not the party majority?

I would not like being his Primary opponent - might be enough to stay home.

    That is likely the intent.

It is good to be elite and connected.

Mel Brooks did come to mind.

If Utah elects him, they deserve him.

Unfortunately the rest of the country has to put up with him too.

Not if he obstructs Trump or votes with the dems, both of which are likely.

I agree. He will be consistently anti-Trump. He may not be as venomous as McCain but close. I hope he gets defeated in the primary, he will not be a reliable vote in the Senate.

Trump endorses Mitt Romney for Utah Senate seat

    by Al Weaver | Feb 19, 2018, 9:32 PM

President Trump announced Monday night that he has endorsed Mitt Romney for the open Senate seat in Utah, calling him a "worthy successor" to Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

".@MittRomney has announced he is running for the Senate from the wonderful State of Utah," Trump said in a tweet. "He will make a great Senator and worthy successor to @OrrinHatch, and has my full support and endorsement!"

The endorsement comes three days after Romney announced his intention to run for the seat and despite a roller-coaster relationship between the two, including during Trump's presidential campaign in 2016. At the time, Romney repeatedly denounced Trump's campaign for the White House, calling him a "phony" and a "fraud."

Romney has also criticized Trump at times during the first year of his presidency, including after the protests in Charlottesville, Va. in August.

However, the two have seen a thaw in their relationship in recent months. Since early December, the pair have spoken over the phone on at least two occasions, including once since Hatch announced that he would not seek re-election to an eighth term in office.

Thank you Mr. President for the support. I hope that over the course of the campaign I also earn the support and endorsement of the people of Utah.— Mitt Romney (@MittRomney) February 20, 2018

Up until Hatch's announcement, Trump pushed and prodded the longtime senator to run once again for the upper chamber, including on a trip to Salt Lake City in early December. However, Hatch declined and has enthusiastically endorsed Romney after pushing him since early 2017 to run for his seat.

Romney announced his campaign in a low-key rollout on social media with a web video, followed by a speech in Provo where he said that he does not plan on running as an anti-Trump candidate, but will call out the president when need be.

“If he says something I don’t like, I will call it like I see it,” Romney said.

Prior to Trump's endorsement, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called on the president to get behind Romney's bid for the seat, adding that he would have been surprised if he did not.

“I can’t imagine that he’s not,” McConnell, R-Ky., told the New York Times on Friday. “We don’t want to lose the seat, and this looks like a pretty formidable candidate.”

Trump's agenda is going to crash and burn this November. He will either be dealing with a Democrat House and Senate, or a Senate full of RINO TURDS like Romney. Whatever federal judges Trump wants to get confirmed better be voted on by October 31st. I doubt Trump will get a single federal judge confirmed in 2019 or 2020.

Trump endorsing a man who loathes and despises him is a sign of folly and weakness.

We bet on Trump and he keeps coming up short. People keep saying he is going to do this, or do that, but when you evaluate what he has actually done, the list is pretty short. It has been over one year since Trump/Sessions got in, and not ONE Democrat, or Clinton Crime Cabal, or Clinton Foundation, or any of the FBI and DOJ criminals has been held accountable: NOT A SINGLE ONE.

I am waiting, and waiting, and waiting and waiting. I am curious as to how long people are willing to give Trump and Sessions before they actually start indicting the criminals: Lynch, Rice, McCabe, etc etc etc etc.

Hillary Rodham Clinton should have been indicted MONTHS AGO. The level of brazen criminality in the FBI and DOJ is staggering, and nothing has been done about it. The FBI is so incompetent they allowed a crazed youth to murder 17 people, while they spent all their time on the Russian farce investigation.

    A crappy R needs a lesson. I don't care if its a worse D. I'd rather have a known evil D to fight, than a traitor R. At least I know where I stand.

If we continue to accept traitor R's as the norm, we'll never get any good R's to turn the country around. It will be what we've seen the last 30 -40 years. A slow downhill crash.

The way I see it, gotta run the traitor R's out of the country!

Dangerous battle plan, looking to fight a "known evil."

Obama (a known evil) DID fundamentally change America. And its been ALMOST irreversible to get it back where the battle line stood before Obama.

It may not even be possible.

The problem with the Socialist Dems is they don't let history, knowledge of human nature, honesty, or even common sense get in their way of getting in YOUR way.

And with the Media controlled from the Oval Office, you don't have a prayer to make a sensible offense.

And wouldn't hear of a offensive victory even if you made one.

But perhaps you are right - a "known enemy" pushes the country FURTHER down the toilet by "social" disengagement ANY human initiative - and eventually everyone will get fed up and dig out their pitchforks, rope and tar, and start counting the light poles on Pennsylvania Ave.

Things just aren't hurting enough - and probably won't under a Trump Admin - unless the stock market tanks.

The good news - from a conversation with a co-worker who's originally from Utah - a lot of people out there can't stand him. Part of the reason is that, while he's Mormon, he keeps soft selling his religion in favor of politics, which rubs a lot of Mormons the wrong way. Per my co-worker, the only time her parents ever voted Democrat was to vote against Mitt.

I was VERY surprised that Trump endorsed Mittens - after all of the negative things Mittens had to say about Trump during the election.

It makes me wonder if Trump is turning RINO.

What Every Utah Voter Needs To Know About Mitt Romney
Feb 17, 2018 Read More Articles by Guest Writer

    By Gregg Jackson

Mitt Romney announced his candidacy for the United States Senate yesterday. Having covered him closely as a radio talk show host on WRKO in Boston while Mr. Romney was governor of Massachusetts, I know his record inside and out. Mr. Romney claims to be a social and fiscal conservative. But his actual record demonstrates that he is nothing more than Ted Kennedy in a Ronald Reagan costume. Utah voters deserve to know the documented truth about Mr. Romney. Here it is.

Mitt Romney, Fiscal and Social Liberal:

Illegally & unconstitutionally instituted same-sex “marriage” falsely claiming the Massachusetts Supreme Court “ordered him to.” Proof here and here

Signed $50 tax-subsidized abortions into law (2 years AFTER his fake “pro-life conversion.” Proof here

Boosted funding for homosexual “education” starting in kindergarten. Proof here

Opposes a ban on homosexual scoutmasters. Proof here

Promised the homosexual Republican “Log Cabin Republicans” he wouldn’t oppose “gay marriage” in return for their endorsement. Proof here

Instituted a quasi-socialist healthcare plan endorsed by Hillary Clinton, Teddy Kennedy and Planned Parenthood that destroyed the Massachusetts’ economy. Proof here and here.

Increased taxes and fees by close to a billion dollars which destroyed the Massachusetts’ economy and opposed the Bush Tax Cuts. Proof here

Voted # 8 RINO by Human Events. Proof here.

Passed over Republican lawyers for three quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he faced and nominated 2 open homosexuals. Proof here

Criticized Joint Chief’s of Staff, Peter Pace for saying that homosexual acts were “immoral.” Proof here

Supports passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which would force churches and other religious organizations to hire homosexuals and transvestites or face criminal fines and prosecution. Proof here

Romney supported McCain-Feingold “campaign finance reform”, McCain-Kennedy “comprehensive immigration reform” (i.e. amnesty), and parts of the McCain-Lieberman “carbon cap and trade” bill and opposed the Bush Tax Cuts. Proof here

How Mitt Romney is under attack in Utah for ‘liberal Massachusetts values’

    By S.A. Miller - The Washington Times - Thursday, March 8, 2018

Mitt Romney is being hit with the first attack ad of the Utah Senate race Thursday, a slickly produced video that portrays him as a darling of the D.C. establishment and gives him the nickname “flip-flopper Mitt.”

The ad from Republican candidate Larry Meyers slams Mr. Romney, the presumptive front-runner in the GOP race, with accusations of not being conservative enough for Utah voters.

“The D.C. establishment loves Mitt Romney. But Utah voters have a better choice. Larry Meyers,” says the announcer.

It then rips open an old wound for Mr. Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee and a former Massachusetts governor.

In 2012, President Barack Obama also accused Mr. Romney of being a flip-flopper and having “no core.”

“Flip-flopper Mitt has been all over the map. On issues like the Second Amendment. On issues like life. And the last time Mitt Romney was elected, he stuck the country with the blueprint for Obamacare,” says the ad, the voice-over announcer’s words repeated in text across the screen.

These lines of attack are expected to dominate the race, as it follows a familiar patter of recent GOP primaries becoming conservative versus establishment showdowns.

“Utah voters have a choice. Mitt Romney’s liberal Massachusetts values or qualified, conservative Larry Meyers,” says the ad.

The ad will first run as a web video and later as a TV spot, according to the Meyers campaign.

Mr. Romney, despite his close ties to Utah and summer home there, was branded a carpetbagger by state GOP officials as soon as he signaled interest in replacing retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch.

Mr. Romney quickly picked up an endorsement from President Trump, but that doesn’t guarantee support from Trump voters in Utah.

Mr. Meyers, a former city prosecutor, is running as a “real conservative.”

His campaign is being led by Alex Rountree, who helped orchestrate Roy Moore’s upset win over Sen. Luther Strange last year in Alabama’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate.

Mr. Moore’s campaign stumbled amid accusations that in his 30s he pursued romantic relationships with teenage girls. He lost the reliably Republican seat to Democrat Doug Jones.
