Clear geodesic domes? I would think they could handle the wierd winds. More detailed and expensive build, but maybe better long term?

You might be onto something here; their dome shape would be a common surface to any shifting wind direction. When I have time, will search for geodesic dome greenhouse plans.

Clif High once posted some pictures of himself, with a friend, constructing his geodesic dome garden. I think he'd even posted plans or maybe a link to plans, showing the exact sizes and angles for cutting all the pieces to build from scratch rather than purchasing a kit.

I believe he ended up building two domes of different sizes, but I'm not sure I'm remembering this correctly.

It seemed that most had a learning curve, with some birds lost to bleeding. The testes are adjacent to an artery and vein, so its easy to accidentally nick them.
Another problem entailed not removing all of the testes, called a "slip" bird which still retained their masculine rooster characteristics.
It would seem that the Chinese really have this procedure down as they can process their birds at a rapid clip.
It also agreed that the Chinese make the best caponizing tools.

After the chicken becomes a capon and is raised for harvest, there was universal agreement that they tasted much better than a rooster. They felt it was worth the effort to capon.

Question: could you ask if the Chinese caponizing kit is still available to buy? The early links up to page 87 are now dead.
And yes, there were a lot of belligerent posts from "animal lovers" who condemned caponizing as inhumane and cruel.

The regular thread posters would stop their complaining by pointing out that these birds are MEAT birds destined for the table.

Here ya go. This is directly from AliExpress in China.

And stop by and watch the caponizing video on the listing for the table. The chick is held still by the person's feet and the procedure is lightning quick.

The Vikings built turf houses, and the pilgrims and pioneers had versions of dug-out houses. The don't blow away, and and are self insulating. These can be easy on the budget too.

I keep my rabbits in large walk-in wire pens with a wire floor, so they can't dig out. I used to shovel out the communal pens, but no more. By letting the debris build up (I feed a lot of leaves and hay), they can dig their own shelters. I help out with wood boxes, pallets and cinder blocks to support the "turf" above. The pens have tarps for roofing, but our NM sun destroys those over the course of a year, so most are still there, but tattered. I keep tarps on for some shade, but the it is really the underground spaces that keep the bunnies cool in summer.

I currently raise Flemish Giants, and I MUCH prefer them over the many other breeds I've owned. Mine get along fine in single sex colonies. Only drawback is they ARE heat sensitive, even more so than my other rabbits have been, and the space underground is essential for them.

One possible solution for the greenhouses -- if you have suitable soil and don't have a high water table -- is to dig down and build an 'underground' greenhouse. Look up 'walipini' greenhouse on-line. (Link to a search: https://www.google.com/search?client...13.TIRBCfFXTkk )

I don't know if I can do anything like this here, because we've got bedrock showing in our yard in spots, but I am going to dig a few test holes and see if there's any location suitable for one -- and one end could be our storm shelter, as well. I am going to start with a walk-in hoop house made with cattle panels; the underground greenhouse would be a project for next year, probably, because I would need to get some help in order to build it.

Thanks! Even through I don't have any chickens I might buy a set for my "hope chest."

I can't believe how fast the Chinese can do this procedure!
