Macron proposes new law against fake news

Sites that distribute fake news would face punishment.

    1/3/18

French President Emmanuel Macron will propose new rules cracking down on fake news during elections this year, he said in an annual speech to the press today.

“When fake news are spread, it will be possible to go to a judge (…) and if appropriate have content taken down, user accounts deleted and ultimately websites blocked,” Macron said.

“Platforms will have more transparency obligations regarding sponsored content to make public the identity of sponsors and of those who control them, but also limits on the amounts that can be used to sponsor this content.”

Sites that distribute fake news would face punishment and media regulators would have more power to fight them.

During the French presidential election campaign, Macron banned Russian outlets RT and Sputnik from his campaign events, arguing they spread false information.

The EU has avoided drafting rules targeting fake news but has launched a high-level group of experts to help craft a European approach tackling the issue.

Macron Shuts Down ‘Fake News,’ Blames Russia

    January 05, 2018

French President Emmanuel Macron's government became the first to go to the extreme of shutting down an alleged "fake news" website this week amidst claims by the Elysee Palace that Russia is spreading false rumors about the leader.

In a claim similar to those made by liberals in the U.S., Macron has asserted that RT, formerly Russia Today, and Sputnik were directly involved in spreading “fake news” lies about him and his campaign during last year’s presidential election. He also reportedly confronted Russian President Vladimir Putin with his allegations, saying he would not “back down an inch” from them.

During his first press conference of the new year, the French president said:

If we want to protect liberal democracies, we must have strong legislation. When fake news is spread, it will be possible to go to a judge and if appropriate have content taken down, user accounts deleted and ultimately websites blocked. Platforms will have more transparency obligations imposed on them regarding sponsored content, making the identity of sponsors and those who control them public.

Macron insists press freedoms will be protected by the measure, but critics are already charging that there will be a large public outcry if the proposal goes forward. The European Union has put together its own commission to explore similar “fake news” legislation, but no bills have been proposed yet.

Sooo...how long before Macron or anyone else declares whatever news he doesn't like "fake" and slaps it with these various penalties?
