    New Firefox 57 - beware

Just had firefox autoupdate to version 57.... oh my.... CPU 100% with all extensions updates disabled... completely locking up the system, and of course this was my primary browser. Grr.... back on IE until I track down the issue

After probably a year I finally updated FF a month ago. Within seconds it prompted a pop-up that I need to update to the 'new version'. Good luck buddy.

The only problem I had was it deleted the show all bookmarks from my toolbar. This annoyed the #$%%% out of me. I went into their help page, looked up their new "improvement," wrote them a nasty "did this help you" comment section. I then looked up how to put it back on my toolbar, which I have now done.

I hate it when "they" improve computer stuff without even bothering to ask me. So far I have seen no other tweaks that annoy me. They did completely redo the tool bar, move stuff around, and add some stuff that maybe gets them hot in the break room, but has little practical use out in the real world.

No problem with the update. I runs faster, but it ticks me off that a bunch of my add-ons no longer work with this version. They are still there under legacy extensions. Hopefully they will work on updates for them.

I've been running into the 100% cpu while trying to watch videos. My immediate work around is to watch videos on chrome.

With Firefox 57 many addons will no longer function. Support for many of them have been dropped. It is rumored that some of these such as the "Classic FireFox" addon cannot even function under the new web extension system. If true then Such extensions are a thing of the past. No Script now will have to install a totally new version(different software format) to work with 57. I am not sure if that version exists yet. This new version won't be backwards compatible with 56. So two versions of the software have to be maintained.

Can anyone who has made the leap say if no-script was able to update and keep on working.

The only work around was to refuse to update to 57 or install a different version of Firefox(Firefox ESR). Mozilla does not write most of the addons (now called extensions). Updating them(starting from scratch?) has to be done by those individuals who wrote them. Many of the authors will probably say "screw it". Some of the addons cannot even work properly(or at all) under the new web extension format.

Yeah, uninstalled every extension / add-on, refresh, but locks up the machine the moment I try and do anything past my home page, if it even gets that far. Pain in the butt, reminds me of Win10 when it first came out.

*update* uninstalled 57, installed the 52.5 ESR version, problem resolved.

You could try to uninstall Firefox and go back to previous version. If you do then be sure to go into options and tell firefox not to check for updates. Otherwise you know what will happen. Here is a link to the last version of Firefox 56.

My FF 57 just installed, and it's not been problematic at all. In fact, for whatever reason, I'm zipping around more quickly than before.

When Mozilla put a 100 grand $$$,$$$,$$$ to fund a secure email server for a group that includes Antifa I said goodbye to my favorite browser Firefox. I will not be a party to helping Antifa in any way, shape or form. If Mozilla gets hit in the pocketbook then maybe they will wake up, until then I will forego Firefox. I will eventually get around to writing them and telling them I uninstalled them; I just wish a hundred thousand of my friends would do the same. We could change the world if we stood up together and said, "Hell NO!"

    I hope the following information will be helpful to some people;

    Background:
My first Firefox was Version 37. A short while later I noticed it had upgraded itself to Version 38, even though I had checked the boxes denying upgrades. A while later I noticed it had upgraded again to Version 39. I realized that if I clicked Help and About, it initiated an upgrade, regardless of the state of the check boxes.

Okay. I'll put a stop to this. I searched for an add-on that would block sites. The first one offered was Block Site, which I installed, blocking Mozilla, with warnings turned on. The warnings exposed Mozilla's dirty secret. They showed that every site I visited was reported to Mozilla. Mozilla can then link up your IP address with the URL. I wonder if selling these links is a way for Mozilla to make money to give to antifa. I don't know if this information is useful to a third party.

I'm still running Version 39, thanks to Block Site. And since implementing a massive hosts file several months ago when it was first discussed, web sites load very quickly. My hosts file is nearly 15,000 entries. There is no noticeable delay in boot time. In fact, if you add an entry, you only need log out and log back in to read the new hosts file. I use Notepad++ for editing because it automatically loads the last file that was read.

At some point, I should probably research getting a later version of Firefox.

I have an XP box with Firefox 3 on it. No, it doesn't work much at all anymore. I leave it for nostalgia and use Seamonkey on that machine the few times I go webbing with it. Switched to Palemoon for the primary laptop.

I still haven't figured out the new tabs page. In the last version I had the Start Page add-on. I had about 20 websites set up on that. This new tab has two rows of sites but I have tried everything to set up some url's and I can't figure out how to enter a new site. I don't use Pocket so that's out. The highlights thing says it's supposed to show you websites you recently visited. I've been browsing the web all day and there isn't a thing in the highlights section. I am getting ready to uninstall and go back to version 56.

Just upgraded to Version 57.0. I'm not seeing any heavy CPU usage with video..perhaps 12 to 15% at times. Seems to run better than whatever iteration of Version 56 I had been running. I only have one or two add-ons. Running Win 10 with 16 GB RAM.

I told dh yesterday that we will not be doing this upgrade. Gonna wait till something else comes along. I am running Firefox classic in 56 and it works just fine. Not messing around with something new right now.

Just don't click on the help button. That's how they get you along with make sure you don't click the auto update in the options.

I have enough meatworld issues to deal with right now without computer stuff too. Not messing up this almost new puter. It runs great so far and I don't need the headache.

It's using about the same memory--a lot--but it only gives me two rows of sites instead of the four I had before when opening a new window. Bookmarks are way more cumbersome too. This is a huge step down.

edited to add: things DO seem to be loading faster, I admit. Perhaps more of a mixed bag than expected.

I upgraded to Firefox 57, and my add-ons automatically upgraded as well. No issues at all.

Recently, my Firefox had been occasionaly crashing when watching videos on Hulu or YouTube or other sites.

So far (fingers crossed) that issue seems to have ended.

First, I am a bonded and certified TechTard. How do I uninstall this new FF version? In the past, FF always ASKED if I wanted to update. This is the first time it updated without my consent. I already don't like it. I want the previous one back. If anyone can explain in very simple terms, I'd appreciate it.

Also, I don't see any numbers such as 57. Where would this identification number be?

Here's the fix to the bookmark issue:
Right click on the right side of the menu bar, just below the tab bar.
When you right click on it, a drop down menu will appear.
    Click "Customize".
On the Customize box, drag and drop "Bookmark Menu" icon to the menu bar wherever you want it.
That will give you access to all your bookmarks. Easy Peasy.

Edited to add: the bookmark issue was my only issue with the new release, but with that fixed, I'm very happy with Firefox 57.

Go to help and about to see your version. This will also start the update if auto update is enabled in your options. The default for auto update is enable.

You can install an old version over the top of 57. Backup your profile just in case. After the install go to options and disable the auto update.
Go here ( Start/run or in the windows search bar)
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Copy your profile folder to another location.

I figured out how to get my kasperskys and my ghostery up to the tool bar so I can check them when I want to

Those were the only problems I've had . It does load a whole lot faster thats for sure

Folks need to play around with it to see what stuff does. You can always use the default box in Customize to get it back to what 57 was when you started it.

also go to the Options and under the General section you can set your ff updates how you want them. I've now changed mine to update but I'll choose to install them if I want

Regarding NoScript, this webpage says there will be a new version of NoScript, Noscript 10, compatible with Firefox 57, coming out by the end of this week ("if everything goes well"):

I am having trouble too! Did you find out how to fix your problem?

My computer automatic downloaded Firefox Version 57 this morning, after I turned on my computer. It has mess up all videos that I click on. When I switch over to Internet Explorer, I don' have a problem.

Can some help me figure out how to fix this? Does it mean my flash is out of date on Firefox, since video's color is messed up?

Below is what I see, when playing a video.
