For people in vehicles, radio is still an important source of real time emergency information.

In Milwaukee and Chicago I have heard major radio stations being very slow to broadcast emergency weather information when a baseball game is in progress.

Ah, automation. A wonderful cost-saving move as long as absolutely nothing unexpected happens ever.

That's sad, HC. No more live staff reporting? DH & I were just talking about that yesterday (left for another day)....

This, though is possibly life-threatening. Hear that Novato fire is now 50 acres but the crews have gone up to Sonoma, so there is nothing being done to contain it. For those not familiar with the area, Novato is in Marin, directly north of San Francisco.

Are people getting the news from the local TV stations, though? That won't help people driving through, though.

We have a family home in Santa Rosa. Neighbors called and said they were evacuated around 4am. I don’t know how to find out information on a specific area to know if the house is still standing.

We are on the phone with family now. They are just east of the mandatory fire line. The fire appears to be moving West. Hard for me to visualize that if embers are falling in Berkeley.

Son and DIL live/work about an hour south/southeast of these fires and report lots of smoke even that far away. Son says they have no idea how they started, and they are ZERO percent contained.

    Praying.

Thank you annieosage. That is some pretty country. Sounds like it drops off Donner Pass.

I am a simple minded person. When somebody says they are going to burn me, or shoot me, or cut my head off I take it literally and act accordingly. On the surface this is no act of nature. Not trying to start woo on this thread but the threat has been made and people have been caught starting fires in the past.

I don't see that it rules out man caused. A bunch of jihadis/others with road flares, driving around on a windy night, coordinated. There were no storms with lightning. So what else caused these multiple fires all at the same time, at night? During the day sometimes machinery can start a spark, but much less likely at night, all at the same general time, in multiple locations.

There cannot possibly be 60 natural caused fires.

Power lines in high winds are the most common cause of fires. Limbs blow into them or sometimes they just snap and spark when they hit the ground. Can't be ruled out. The report that caught my attention was the fires seemed to start in 5 different locations. That does not sound natural.

Sure it can be natural. Or are you of the mindset that only one power line in the entire affected area can spark and cause a wild fire? I mean cause you just totally contradicted yourself.

Read my above thread packy. We were on the phone with family that lives on the mandatory evac. line just a little while ago. They are without power but flames are not in their neighborhood. They are not preppers but were thankful I told them to fill their bathtubs with water and know where the shut off valve to their natural gas line is. I am just as concerned as you are but I also want to know if the fires are man made. That could make the fire jump to a different direction than the resources are stationed or evacuation is being done. It is not woo it is relevant. Always know your situation and your limitations.

Poor communication on my part. My point was that when the situation exist where multiple fires in different locations is occurring, one must consider the possibility they were intentionally set, until man made causes are ruled out.

Personally I'd say the only thing we don't know is which group is behind it.

This makes no sense at all.

the wind itself will cause the fires to jump, whether the fires are manmade or not. A hot ember can travel five miles or more and land elsewhere and start another fire. You can watch videos of the Fort MacMurray fires to see how this can be true.

Figuring out the cause isn't conspiracy. In fact, it is a critical piece, often, of figuring out whether the threat is contained or likely to spread etc.

I did not contradict myself I just made a point of two plausible explanations. Sure lines can go down but normally they go down in one location. Once any fire gets going in winds it can throw embers for miles and start other fires. I don't have anymore answers than you and just as worried about the situation as you. If they are man made I want to know. You can suit yourself as to what you want to know.

The only California Anaheim I am familiar with is by LA. There could be more than one Anaheim CA. If a new fire started outside of LA that would be a very interesting development.
