Chocolate milk is too confusing for nearly half of American adults, survey finds

Today in mind-blowing statistics: A full 7 percent of American adults think chocolate milk comes from brown cows, Food & Wine reports. That figure comes from an Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy survey of more than 1,000 people conducted in April.

When extrapolated, it means approximately 16.4 million Americans — or roughly the population of Pennsylvania — are hopelessly misinformed about chocolate milk, according to the The Washington Post.

Overall, the survey found 48 percent of US adults aren't sure where chocolate milk comes from (though 29 percent use their kids as cover to buy it for themselves).

Today helpfully explains that chocolate milk is defined by the Center for U.S. Dairy as "cow's milk with added flavoring and sweeteners."

While nearly half of Americans not being clear where chocolate milk comes from may seem shocking, agriculture and nutrition experts likely aren't surprised — they've been complaining for decades that Americans are woefully ignorant about what they eat.

“We still get kids who are surprised that a french fry comes from a potato," says the co-founder of nonprofit FoodCorps.

A study conducted by the Department of Agriculture two decades ago found nearly one in five adults didn't know hamburgers are made from beef. Another study of fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders in urban California found more than half didn't know pickles are cucumbers or onions and lettuce are plants; nearly a third didn't know cheese is made from milk.

(It probably doesn't help that dark chocolate, too, is often not what it seems.)

This article originally appeared on Newser: "48 Percent of US Adults Aren't Sure Where Chocolate Milk Comes From."

BREATHING would be too complex for a significant percentage of Americans today, if it wasn't a reflex.

Maybe they thought the poll question was stupid, so they picked the most stupid answer.

Part of the problem is our schools. It no surprise that most of them are living within big city's where there are no farms to be seen and no contact with anyone that lives on one.
Around here everyone knows better and would only joke about chocolate milk coming from a brown cow, so seeing a license plate on a truck that says "Cows-R-US" and "Got Cow" can be seen locally. We still have a yearly county fair and much livestock to be seen and all kinds of food on display, even talks and papers on preserving foods.

    Oh, Lord, yes!!

When we showed cows (ours were mostly Ayrshires, which are red and white, although we did have a nice line of Jerseys- brown- for a few years) we had people OVER AND OVER come up and ask if the Jerseys gave chocolate milk, or the Ayrshires strawberry milk. MOSTLY, they were joking (these were mostly county fairs in areas without a huge citiot population)

But occasionally, one would take serious offense when we'd laugh dutifully... they were dead serious!

Then there were the ones who would come up and demand (usually very aggressively, and clearly unhappy about "animal abuse" or "poisoned milk") "what hormones do you use to make them give milk?" Almost all of them had small children or even infants with them. More than once, I was tempted to ask "gee, I dunno.. what did your wife have to take to nurse your baby?"

Clueless doesn't begin to cover it.

    Winner Winner...chikn dinner.

I propose the 7% are not stupid...if anything, they are wiser than most.

I was going to make a thread about this a few days ago. I have heard the reports from some national and local MSM about this poll of 1000 people. All of them extrapolate this out to a YUUGE number of stupid people nationwide when they report it. All base their analysis on their assumption that no one would lie on a POLL (i.e. all these 7% believe that chocolate milk comes fresh-squeezed from brown cows). Polls are always accurate, you see? So there must be stupid people drinking milk. this is PROOF.

Not ONE of the media reports will attribute this to the most OBVIOUS conclusion (to me) - that 7% of the people are just so sick of polls they will always give the most adverse / incorrect/ inflammatory answer; whatever answer that will skew or invalidate the poll.

The 7% is what allowed Trump to totally broadside Clinton in the last election - BY ANSWERING ALL THOSE MEDIA POLLS FOR Clinton. both the media and the DNC were snookered to thinking they had the hag in the bag.

All because the 7% lulled them into a sleep and allowed them to dream of another 8 years of power...it is this that made the rest of the MAJORITY able to ride over the systematic corruption that steals 6% of our vote every election.

So, this 7% that seem to want to state that chocolate milk comes from brown cows...they are the saviors of the last election. They must be honored, not ridiculed.

I toast the 7% and raise my fresh glass of chocolate milk (fresh-squeezed of course) and wish them well in their mission to destroy the evil of polling.

I actually had someone say that... They thought that meat was "Manufactured" at the grocery store... They said they even saw them grinding it into hamburger behind the glass in the meat department where it was made...

This is partly my fault. This is what I tell every city slicker I meet. They think that we live like they do on Petticoat Junction and I do not dissuade them of that belief. I don't want them to know that we have all the modern conveniences. Next thing you know they will be wanting to move out to the country!

Ok, I reread the article- "only" 7% believe it comes from brown cows. That pretty well correlates to the numbers we observed when we were showing cows. The "almost half" apparently "aren't sure"... which is weird enough in itself. But it is truly shocking how many people have NO CLUE about the basic facts of life, where their food comes from, etc.

Thus my assertion over the years that the average citiot would starve to death standing next to a milk cow in a ripe wheat field!!

I've had people refuse to buy my Araucana chicken eggs because they're blue and green. They're "too weird". (then again, I have a lot of customers who absolutely love my assorted colored cartons of eggs... go figure).

But probably the best one I ever heard was when our kids were in 4-H. The farm they were using for their club meeting had an assortment of livestock... goats, chickens, turkeys, a couple cows. One of the kids found a clutch of colored eggs in the goat pen... and managed to convince several of the parents (who obviously were city transplants) that the goat had laid them, and if they were incubated, they'd hatch out baby goats!!

    We're doomed.

That would depend on how far below freezing you're talking about.
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”
