Dems Beware: Sanders 'Movement' Turns to Midterms

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politi...cid=spartanntp

Independent Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders speaks beside Senate Minority Leader Democrat

With Democrats facing tough prospects in the midterm elections, will they also have to worry about primary challenges from their left flank?

During his presidential campaign, Sen. Bernie Sanders never quite decided whether his "political revolution" could coexist with the Democratic Party or needed to overthrow it. Now, Sanders is one of the most popular political figures in the country and the activists he galvanized have gone on to start new groups, join old ones, or run electoral campaigns.

The path of Sanders' former staffers reflects the split in his movement, and the some are already galvanizing for the 2018 elections and setting their sights on their own.

Rep. Keith Ellison, one of Sanders' most prominent allies, preached unity during his bid for the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee and is now the party's deputy chairman.

But the more radical strain, which led hundreds of Sanders delegates to walk out of the Democratic National Convention in protest last summer, is still present on the left and emboldened by the loss of Hillary Clinton and their belief that "Bernie would have won."

Some are betting that the disaffected left is as or more interested in remaking the Democratic Party as it is in fighting President Donald Trump.

While they've yet to prove they are capable of being any kind of a force to be reckoned with, a handful of groups that grew out of the Sanders movement have already begun issuing primary threats against Democratic incumbents.

One called #WeWillReplaceYou has warned specific members of congress it may challenge them. But it promises to use discretion in targeting only those Democrats it feels have strayed from the party.

Another new group staffed by ex-Sanders aides, Justice Democrats, has less clear plans. While their audacious talk isn't backed up at the moment, they have an innovative model that could be used to run a large slate of candidates on the cheap against possibly dozens of incumbents.

This week, Justice Democrats merged operations with another anti-incumbent group founded by former Sanders aides, Brand New Congress, which started last year.

"The point is we've watched this party over the last decade lose over 1,000 seats, lose a national election to least popular nominee in history, Donald Trump, and now we've seen poll after poll showing the Democratic Party less popular since election day," Brand New Congress' Corbin Trent said in an interview. "What we think is the American people are ready for a new direction."

It's a step farther than previous liberal efforts, which have fielded challenges to establishment favorite Democrats in open races but generally not against elected party members.

If they are able to follow through, the result would likely be a mass of underfunded token candidates, not necessarily serious challengers. But that may still be enough to make their point that members of Congress should not run unopposed in primaries.

Justice Democrats' unusual approach lets anyone nominate potential candidates online. They say they've received 8,300 nominations so far and raised $1 million with virtually no marketing. And they claim a large group of volunteers with experience on campaigns who will help coordinate a central political infrastructure to support their entire slate.

Democratic officials say they're not too worried about primary challenges in next year's midterm elections the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee declined to comment but the Tea Party showed in 2009 and 2010 that grassroots opposition movements can sometimes turn on their own party.

The democratic caucuses in both house and senate are likely more liberal than they have ever been, after moderates were culled in the 2010 and 2014 midterm election waves. The so-called Blue Dogs have been largely wiped out and even the red state senators who are Democrats' top priorities in 2018, are historically fairly progressive for their states.

But for Justice Democrats' founder, liberal media personality Cenk Uygur, what seems to matter most is inflicting damage on the Democratic Party.

The group's website features an image of a sledgehammer smashing the "D" logo of the Democratic National Committee and declares "it's time to rebuild the Democratic Party from scratch."

Not mentioned hardly anywhere on the site is Trump.

"It is time for them to step aside and let us lead. If you want unity, we're ready to lead. You get unified on this actual progressive platform," Ugyur said on his popular internet TV show, The Young Turks.

The show's advertising package claims it has 85 million unique monthly views in addition to a core of members who pay $10 a month or more for extra services. That supports a large staff and professional broadcast operation that hosted major guests from Sanders to film director Quentin Tarantino.

Critics say Ugyur's slash-and-burn approach to the Democratic Party is little more than an opportunist attempt to corner the media market for disaffected liberals, and that now he and his ilk are trying to do the same for politics.

There's not a great track record of similar media entrepreneurs moving into politics. Glenn Beck's 9/12 Project never amounted to much and former Daily Show host Jon Stewart's massive "Rally for Sanity" in Washington fizzled.

New Liberal PAC Targets Democrats for Primaries

    by Alex Seitz-Wald Feb 15 2017, 2:06 pm ET

A new progressive Political Action Committee plans to recruit and fund primary opponents to Democratic members of Congress that it feels are not aggressive enough in fighting President Donald Trump.

WeWillReplaceYou.org was formed by a group of progressive activists with backgrounds in the Bernie Sanders campaign, the environmental movement, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the DREAMer movement of young undocumented immigrants.

It's a project of #AllofUs, a new millennial progressive organization that has protested Democratic members of the Senate, urging them to draw a harder line against Trump's cabinet nominees and policy agenda.

While many liberals, including filmmaker Michael Moore, have issued nominal threats of left-wing challenges to Democratic lawmakers, WeWillReplaceYou.org appears to be the first organized effort to explicitly turn those threats into a reality. That will likely put it on a collision course with Democratic efforts to protect incumbents.

"Other groups are probably expecting to primary Democrats, but we think that it's important to make the threat clear now because so many Democrats are not fighting Trump forcefully enough and we need to communicate that we're serious," Claire Sandberg, a former Sanders staffer and one of the group's founders, told NBC News. "Our message to Democrats is pretty straightforward: Fight Trump or we'll find someone who will."

The objective is not necessarily to replace Democratic incumbents, but to pressure them, Sandberg said, adding that the group is holding off on releasing any targets at the moment.

"We want to leave the door open for Democrats to improve and be stronger in their opposition to Trump," said Sandberg. "We're only a few weeks into the Trump administration. Our goal is not primary every single Democratic member of Congress. It's to push Democrats who are there to do better."

WeWillReplaceYou.org will decide which Democrats to target based on where it can have an impact and through surveys of its members. There may be a handful of "litmus tests," the group suggested, such as voting against Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

The group welcomes comparisons to the Tea Party, and it's certain to attract familiar criticism from Democratic officials worried that primary challenges will undermine the party's ability to retain seats.

Ten Democratic senators are up for reelection next year in states Trump won. Republicans now hold 52 seats and the Senate, and if they were to pick off 8 of those ten Democrats, the GOP would win a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority -- an outcome many Democrats would view as Armageddon.

Sandberg rejected the criticism that primary challenges to those Democrats would imperil the party's effort to hold those seats. Demoralizing the base with tepid opposition to Trump, Sandberg said, should be Democrats' bigger fear.

"The same base that supports those primary challenges will propel them to victory in general elections," she said.

But in places like West Virginia, where Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin is facing a tough reelection battle, Democrats will almost certainly need more than base voters alone to prevail. Trump won the state by over 40 percentage points.

Either way, primary challenges seem inevitable after an election loss that galvanized the left and nurtured doubts about party leadership.

"The 53 Senators, including Democrat Joe Manchin, who voted to put millions of jobs at risk by putting another Wall Street banker in charge of the Treasury Department shouldn't expect to keep theirs," Charles Chamberlain, the executive director of the liberal group Democracy for America said after Manchin joined Republicans in voting to confirm Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin Monday.

WeWillReplaceYou.org plans to raise money and organize volunteer efforts online, so the scale of its operations and the number of races it gets involved in will depend on how much support it receive.

But it hopes to operate on the cheap. The group plans to eschew expensive TV advertising in favor of some digital ads to support its main focus on distributed organizing, which leverages technology to generate phone calls, door knocks, and other volunteer efforts without the overhead of paid staff required by more traditional field programs.

As a hybrid PAC, the group can coordinate directly with campaigns in addition to fund independent expenditures.

In addition to Sandberg, who was the director of digital organizing on Sanders' campaign, advisors to the new group include include Kenneth Pennington, Sanders' former digital director, Rafael Navar, the national political director of the Communications Worker of America, May Boeve, the executive director of the environmental group 350 Action, Taj James, the executive director of Movement Strategy Center, former andra Flores-Quilty, the president of the United States Student Association and Carolina Canizales, a former United We Dream official.

All are working in their personal capacity, not on behalf of their groups.

Another advisor, Jessica Pierce, who once ran the NAACP's field training program, said Democrats' current leadership has taken support from communities of color for granted.

"Even now our elected leaders are still failing us," she said. "As someone who has run national election campaigns in every election cycle since 2006 , but who has also been a part of the momentum of the Movement for Black Lives -- I know that it is going to take all of, working strategically to make the change that people need. We must resist at every level-- from the streets to the Senate."

This plan of theirs is very, very good. I hope they go pedal to the metal and get moslems, black moslems, trannies and wild eye anarchists or maybe even some illegals running instead of the well groomed sort of moderate sounding caucasian regular Dummies (if there are any moderate sounding ones still standing).

Well, the DNC has already been channeling that bunch for all of their protest action...the potential for them to migrate to those who are not just mouthing those views but "true believers" have historically been underestimated. Just look at the events of the French and Russian revolutions as key examples of the "establishment" "refomers" and revolutionaries" getting moved "aside" by the real firebrands.

    Interesting times.....

those ten states that went Trump and now in play for 2018 - are seeing good results already from Prez Trump's 50 Day Swamp Drain ....

going to be really rough to get even the union DNCs to vote for any DNC congressmen - hard to argue with more jobs - tough to vote for an a-hole doing all he can to stop the progress being accomplished ....

    No argument there.

Again historically once they're no longer useful to the "movement" this bunch either gets diverted to face an outside enemy to be whittled away or they're openly turned on starting with leadership and "middle management" since they are a threat to the "vision" of the new self anointed ruling class.

    And that's if they "win".

Again, look at the historical record.

I have long felt the true "Trump effect" would be the purging of both the RINO based Republican Party and the purging of the Corporate version of the Democratic Party. The final result of the "Trump effect," will be the creation of four political parties: hard right, center right, center left, and hard left.

With the election of Perez to the DNC position, the Democrats are going for the hard left party. This means the "new" Democratic Party will be "purer" than the current one. They will be significantly reduced to a bi-coastal party, along with Illinois, New Mexico, DC and some of the Northeastern states.

After Trump purges the RINOS in the 2018 primaries, he will have the numbers in both the Senate and House to do what he wants.

My vision for the political future includes a weaker, more ideological, extreme Marxist version of the DNC. They will be the party of the "true believers." They will have abandoned the white working class. They will at best control 12 to 15 states, plus DC. The DNC will be locked into between 100 and 135 House Seats, and 30 Senate seats permanently.

The DNC has decided to triple down on stupid and has learned NOTHING from their 2016 election defeat. Despite the Republicans being the stupid party, and their current farce of "governing," 2018 is their's to lose. Lying Ryan and Mitch the Bitch may just screw up badly enough to eat into that 300 House and 60 plus Senate Majority if they keep going RINO TURD mode, but I hope Trump can restrain them. The Republicans are called the Stupid Party for a reason. My take is they are terrified of actually governing now that they are in the majority and control the House, Senate and White House. They are sort of like the dog that caught the car.

Did we not have a thread on Bernie's folks working from the bottom, taking over precincts until they have the majority and then taking over the state DNC organization?

I seem to remember that. If so, the Demos have even a bigger problem.

The Sandernistas of the Democratic Party are surging, in spite of loosing out on the competition for party chairman.

You want an outsider, Sanders is one. What he says is what Democrats and Republicans in Vermont want to hear. In spite of running as the populist candidate, Trump has hewed rather closely to the regular R program.

It's a shame that he's backing away from so many campaign promises but that's politics, I guess.

If Trump can get use to a decent national single-payer health insurance program he'll be a hero.

If we can reapply an open free market to healthcare, Trump will be a hero. Government has no business in between doctor and patient and insurance.

YES ABSOLUTELY!!! He can either be a hero or the goat and lose in 2020, and the RINOS going down in 2018.
This is a moment of truth for him right here. If he could only see that.

I do not envision the future of the FUSA, without there being

Only way to prevent it, one side give up. Nope, aint happening.

Do you have any idea how free people might feel once they don't have to worry about the cost of their care? Present card; done. that's so different from our current high-stress system.

I think that we can do better than Canada or Germany. I thought that that's what Trump was promising us: everybody covered; a great system, etc.

The brainless toads that don't want to worry about the cost of (whatever) are the problem. They are too lazy to do the math on what really benefits them for any given dollar they relinquish possession of.

Socialist by default, wards of the nanny state, too effing stupid to care about their own fate.
