DW's birthday was day before yesterday. Made her a "Coke a Cola" cake yesterday. Substituted a can of Coke for the cup of water in the directions. Like my pineapple cake, turned temp down and cooked longer to prevent burning because of the extra sugar. I don't know if it will last much longer.

This time when Arch Michael and Gabriel visited the retreat; they simply suspended time and motion in a frozen state. Conferring with Seamus in the barn, God's messengers looked at Ben without pity. Ben had forsaken his love and obedience to God's word and salvation. He had created blasphemy in his heart, allowed his position as a minister to excuse his behavior, and allowed the devil to enter; knowing full well in his human heart and mind that he was making a conscious choice.

On the floor in the dark and dank barn cell, Ben knew the terror of a life given over to the dark side, seconds before his heart stopped. All of his 'free will' choices flashed before his eyes, and he understood he alone, had condemned himself to the indiscernible suffering of hell.

Seamus was on his knees with his hands folded in supplication, praying that God might sweep aside Ben's behavior, attitude and filthy sins and allow the man to repent.

"No," Michael spoke to Seamus. "Ben did not make use of the time given him to accomplish his repentance. I repeat, the wages of sin is death. Then, now, and always."

Gabe waved his hand, and Seamus became suspended in animation as the rest of the family, while the two heavenly messengers entered the house and looked over the new crop of people brought into the sphere of godly living.

Once again the devout angels passed among the family and healed ills before they were even known to the humans. The rescued babies were given special attention; the willingness of the clan to love and care for the sensory deprived and physically, emotionally and mentally desolated children, was rewarded by the healing of those children through the Grace of God. The new mothers were given the renewed ability to feed, nurture, care and love the infants entrusted to their arms.

When the men had finished, a wave of their hands re-energized the humans and life resumed. There was a long, drawn out cry from Tess. She could feel Ben gone from their lives.

Mark and Clora went to put their arms around their daughter in her agony and sorrow. Seamus was not surprised when he got to the dining room that the family already knew Ben was dead. He wasn't sure what to make of the mother/daughter duo that seemed to understand unseen things in their lives. Seamus knew where his insights came from, he just didn't know about the two women. He also understood, when it was his time to know, God would provide him the answer.

Around the table, the men of the clan were quiet, watching one another with dark and shuttered eyes. Each one of them thinking if the others knew what they suspected individually, the fabric of the family would be irreparably torn. So they stayed silent and listened to their sister's sorrow

The house was silent, except for Tess's sobbing. So quiet, that Toby's whistle of danger was heard loud and clear, as the first cracks of rifle shots impacted the board frame of the house. The retreat was under attack.

The retreat house was deathly quiet. Mothers and Children were gathered in the center room, surrounded by the walls of stone and concrete. Men scattered to the individual rooms, to stand guard.

Suddenly Toby's voice could be heard laughing at the top of his lungs. He was trying to whistle but couldn't. He jerked open the front door and threw in a skinny, dirty urchin that was spitting mad, screeching and foot stomping in a temper.

"You big bully, I've half a mind to kick you in the shins. You give me my gun back, you ignorant doofus," the youth expressed his displeasure by swinging his arms, trying to hit Toby and dislodge the older man's firm grip on the back of his shirt.

Toby reached down and landed a healthy smack on the young boy's butt, the smacking sound, loud in the quiet house.

"That's enough," he growled. "behave, or the next time it will be two. You fired on us, we don't take threats like that lightly."

Toby handed the fist full of wadded up shirt to Robert, heading back out to his guard post. He paused at the door, "There's a group headed this way, moving slow, Gary and Milo, maybe we should determine who they are before they get much closer."

Gary, when he went to walk past the defiant youth, had to dodge a well aimed kick. Quicker than a wink, he was sitting in a chair with the youth across his lap, administering the 'hand of education.' About three smacks later, Gary got a very startled look on his face. The youth was tossed upright, and Gary was bellowing for Tricia and Jainy.

"That's a girl," he sputtered, mad and upset.

"What's it to ya, ya big gorilla," the sassy little mouth spit out. "Don't you put a hand on me again, or you'll regret it." the blustery sounding threat was worthless, but made the youth feel better. She made the grownups snicker, and that didn't help her disposition.

Tricia and Jainy each took a hand, and towed the impertinent little miss down the hallway. As the girl was passing David, she looked the thin child up one side and down the other. "What are you doing here," she sneered.

David looked up startled and drew back against the wall, spitting at the girl. Jainy stopped walking and looked at David in reproach, frowning and expecting the young man to atone and excuse his bad manners.

"She's up to no good," David looked squarely at Jainy, serious eyes never leaving her face. "She spies for them, she was the one that told them to tie me to the tree for the wolves."

Gary was hurrying down the hall toward the apartment when he looked ahead to see the girl launch herself at David with her fingers extended like claws. He heard David's explanation, and went instantly furious. Two long steps had him intercepting the girl as she advanced on David.

His big fist grabbed the back of her shirt along with a good amount of dirty unkempt hair as he jerked her backward. The girl exploded into a whirlwind of hitting, punching fists and kicking feet. The vile language she used in shrieking tones, disturbed the baby in Jainy's shawl and the crying added to the melee. Tricia dropped the girl's other hand as she was in the direct line of fire for the punches from the wind milling free hand.

Gary slapped his hand across the girl's mouth and picked her up by her hair. He could feel her trying to bite his hand, but the callus toughened skin prevented her from getting a hold. Lightening fast, he let go of her hair and grabbed the hand, twisting it harshly behind the girl's back. He kept applying more pain, until the youth stopped her physical assault.

Without saying a word he turned the girl around and had her running on her tip toes as he pushed her toward the living room and the outside of the house. His long stride forcing her to run, or be run over the his large sized combat boots.

Gary was hollering for Robert, Lou, Milo and Toby as he escorted the girl from the house. "David says she is a spy, and the one who had him tied to the tree."

Seamus and Phoebe opened the small barn door to have a look at the commotion, and Phoebe beckoned the men to bring the girl to the barn and the cell occupied by the lifeless body of Ben.

Gary was marching the girl in, as Seamus was dragging Ben's corpse out. The girl broke free from Gary's hold as he prepared to let her go, and whirled around and fell on Ben's body, tearing at the human flesh with her teeth.

Seamus dropped the lifeless body and picked the girl up by an arm and a leg. While she was kicking and screaming, Robert and Lou drug the corpse out of the secure stall and Seamus looked up and the threw the girl into the pile of straw in the corner. Stepping out of the confined area, he securely latched the door behind himself.

Mark walked in the barn as the white faced men tried to get their horrified expressions and breathing under control. A swift glance at the group and the body on the floor and the girl howling like a deranged wolf, had him pursing his lips and raising an eyebrow. Phoebe was busy praying at the top of her mighty and impressive lungs, and Seamus went to stand by her and hug her close with an arm around her shoulder.

"She tried to eat him," Lou accused in a high pitched, squeaky voice, eyes big as saucers. The rest of the men nodded their agreement, shuddering with the enormity of it all.

Mark glanced over toward the girl, "Drugs?" he questioned Gary and got the affirmative nod that he expected.

"This turns into a bigger problem, than we ever imagined." Gary was finally under control. "We can't let her go, she has first hand intelligence about the clan; defenses, number of people, the fact we have food and weapons and a lot of young, helpless members. Second; we can infer that we are dealing with ruthless people that would drug a young girl and send her out as an 'expendable' human for gathering intelligence. From the way she is acting, I'm guessing it's peyote but the precise type isn't necessary to know." The hardened veteran listened to the noises coming from the jail stall.

"Now we are forced to become jailers. Our people aren't safe if she is loose among us. She will most certainly be killed if she returns to her camp as her usefulness is over, and she becomes a burden to us for her care. It's jail or execution............."
Gary was going to say more, but Mark broke in and over rode the words.

"Stop." the patriarch issued his orders. "None of us are qualified to make this decision at the moment."

Every man there heaved a silent sigh of relief. As military men used to fighting for the clan, they were familiar with the need to make snap decisions concerning the safety of themselves, those under their command and the clan prosperity. Deliberately choosing to kill a young girl was an entirely different ballgame.

"She stays in the cell with water and food and a blanket, until God directs us what to do with her." Mark looked at the assembled men and caught their nods. "There will always be two people present when the door to her jail cell is opened. Gentleman, we have a grave to dig. That will be the first duty. I want the body placed in the grave and covered with a cloth, before we have the service. Any questions?"

    There were none.
