Aurora, Colorado: 12 Dead in Shooting Rampage at Midnight Showing of The Dark Knight Rises

Twelve cinema-goers are reported to have been killed and 20 hurt at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora during a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Local media also report that two gunmen went on the rampage. Further reports confirmed that a blast went off at the Century 16 cinema in Aurora, leaving several injured.

"The number of injured is unclear right now," Al Boe, journalist at BNO News, told IBTimes UK on Twitter. "An explosion definitely went off but early reports said shots were fired. Multiple injuries"

A second device may have been located in the parking lot of the theatre, according to police radio. Explosive K9's are on scene.

An Indian male is the main suspect according to police, who is searching the local mall.

At least 12 moviegoers were reportedly killed and 20 injured at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora in the Denver suburbs. They were attending a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

*Local media reports that two gunmen were involved in the rampage. An explosive device was set off during the shooting, injuring several people.

The theater was packed with a lot of people, many of them young fans, at the time the shooting started, 9news reports. The violence erupted some 15 minutes after the movie started, witnesses said.

Witnesses said the gunmen were probably wearing some kind of body armor and gas masks and used some kind of a tear gas bomb in the attack.

Some reports say police have apprehended one of the assailants while the second one is still at large.

Police have cleared people from the scene over fears that another explosive device might be on the premises.

Aurora medical services were alerted to attend to the large number of injured.

Mass shooting at Batman premiere in Colorado

TEN people shot dead as masked gunman opens fire on patrons at a cinema in the US screening the new Batman movie.

There are unconfirmed reports of 10 dead and at least 20 injured in the shooting at at a shopping mall in Aurora, Colorado.

The incident occurred at a cinema showing the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, a police official told NBC News.

One suspect was in custody, police said. It was unclear whether other suspects were involved.

The injured were being transported to three local hospitals.

Local radio station KOA reports 10 people are dead, citing witnesses at the scene.

...This has not been confirmed by authorities.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions.

KOA reports that a figure in a gas mask had opened fire at the showing in a mall in the suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.

The bomb squad is also on the scene.

Aurora, a suburb of Denver, is not far from Littleton, scene of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 that claimed 13 lives.

Russian Troops on American Soil For Anti Terrorism Training

Like a scene out of the movie Red Dawn, Russian paratroopers will be training on U.S. soil for the next month or so.

This comes in wake of recent sightings of military equipment, troops, and more.

The drills are to be conducted in Colorado and revolve around terrorist camp raids and martial law type scenarios.

A Business Insider excerpt reads;

Russian paratroopers will meet up with American forces next month for an unprecedented military exercise in Colorado, according to RT News.

It’s the first time Russian service members will be invited into the United States for a joint drill.

A Russian airborne task force will “exercise with U.S. special service weapons,” an announcement by Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Col. Aleksandr Kucherenko revealed.

The official purpose of the joint training is to practice airborne tactics and anti-terror operations, such as dropping into a hostile area and conducting a “terrorist camp raid.”

“Soldiers of the two countries will hold a tactical airborne operation, including reconnaissance of an imaginary terrorists’ camp and a raid,” said Kucherenko.

It’s worth noting the Russians will have access to U.S. military weapons training at the Army’s Fort Carson — “Home of America’s Best” — ahead of the scheduled May 24-31 drills. They’ll also be trained to understand and operate hardware used by U.S. forces in airborne missions including “parachuting, operation planning, reconnaissance, assault operations and evacuations by helicopter.”

This announcement comes at a time when Russia actually has troops working in cooperation with China.

For the first time in history, Russian and American airborne forces will hold joint drills in the US. The anti-terror exercises scheduled for May 2012 will get off to a flying start with a tactical landing operation and “terrorist” camp raid.

“This is the first time such an event is being held,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Aleksandr Kucherenko stressed, announcing the plan. “The Russian airborne will contribute a special task group that will exercise with US special service weapons.”

The drills were arranged by the Russian Airborne Command and a US military delegation in Moscow last December.

Russian soldiers will receive preparatory training in Colorado’s Fort Carson with the US weaponry and equipment they are to use during the operation. The drills include parachuting, operation planning, reconnaissance, assault operations and evacuations by helicopter.

AURORA — Fourteen people were killed and about 50 were injured early Friday when shots rang out at an Aurora movie theater during a premiere showing of the new Batman movie.

A suspect in is custody and an aparment building connected to the suspect was being evacuated and searched for possible explosives, according to Police Chief Dan Oates,

Ten people died at the theater and four others died at hospitals.

Sometime after 1 a.m., police received reports of gunshots at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center.

No confirmed information is available on how many people were injured and whether there were any fatalities.

Dozens of ambulances and police vehicles were outside the mall,

where the theater was showing "The Dark Knight Rises." Police from all over the metro area had been called to the scene.

A witness, Bejamin Fernandez, 30, said he was watching the movie when he heard a series of explosions. He said that people ran from the theater and there were gunshots as police shouted 'get down!"

He says he saw people falling, including one young girl.

Salina Jordan, 19, was in Theater 8 and saw people hit in her theater. She said one girl was struck in cheek, others in stomach including a girl who looked to be around 9 years old.

She said it sounded like firecrackers until someone ran into Theater 8 yelling "they're shooting out here!"

The police came running in, telling people to run out. Some police were carrying, dragging bodies, she said.

Police had set up a command post near the Dillards and were interviewing hundreds of possible witnesses. Some were taken by buses to Gateway High School for questioning.

Police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson says "the scene is still very active and we have little information for release at this time."

Swedish Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Williams says two people injured at the theater have arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

She says emergency workers have said there could be several more patients.

Denver Health currently has six patients from the Aurora shooting. One is in critical condition and the others five are in fair condition.

11.05 (4.05 Denver) Frank Fania, a police spokesman told CNN that a rifle, a handgun and another gun, described by some witnesses as a shotgun, was found in the theatre.

Mr Fania said that witnesses told police the man “just appeared” at the front of the cinema, possibly from behind the screen or a fire exit.

He said that the motive was unknown “other than it was the latest Batman movie and there was a lot of people.”

Mr Fania said the suspect was apprehended by the first officers on the scene and did not resist arrest.

He added: “He was in the rear parking lot which really is not a public parking lot for the theatre. He did not resist, he did not put up a fight.

"Approximately at 12.30 this morning a gunman appeared at the front of one of the theatres in the Century 16 theatre," he said. "Witnesses tell us that he released some sort of canister.
