Electric Earth: scientists dismayed by pulse emitted from Earth during May 17th CME

June 1. 2012 – SPACE – After an unusually long quiet period, the Sun unleashed a solar flare on May 17 this year – but scientists are now puzzling over what happened on Earth. Neutron monitors all round the world lit up in response to the blast for the first time in six years, despite the fact it was an M-Class, or moderate, flare. The ‘answering’ pulse shouldn’t have happened at all. Now scientists are trying to unravel what happened – and why our planet ‘pulsed’ in response. James Ryan, an astrophysicist at the UNH Space Science Center said, ‘This solar flare was most unimpressive and the associated CME was only slightly more energetic. And looking at it optically, it was remarkably dim; it was, all things considered, a ninety-eight pound weakling of solar events.’ Scientists are now analyzing the data using a satellite which scans an range of bizarre particles invisible to other spacecraft – PAMELA, a European spacecraft dedicated to watching rays from space. The most recent event will allow the study of the evolution of the flare from low to high energies without interruption. ‘The PAMELA satellite provides us with a bridge that has never existed before,’ says Ryan, ‘a bridge between solar energetic particles measured by other spacecraft and those made on the ground by neutron monitors, like the one we’ve operated here in Durham for decades. Spanning that gap has opened up new opportunities.’ –Daily Mail

    Well that's interesting. Real interesting.

Either the suns' particles are more potent or Earth is more sensitive because of ?, or both, or neither, or ?, or Niburu. lol.

This is just more evidence of how little we really know, about Terra, Sol, or the Universe in general... Kinda keeps us humble, doesn't it? Too bad we can't be as deep thinking, concerning other, weightier things, regarding events here... As the laws of physics cannot be ignored, except to one's peril, the laws of finance do have an end point... Either set of laws can, and will upon occasion, kill you...

Science Nugget: Catching Solar Particles Infiltrating Earth's Atmosphere
    05.31.12
    Karen C. Fox

Science nuggets are a collection of early science results, new research techniques, and instrument updates that further our attempt to understand the sun and the dynamic space weather system that surrounds Earth.

On May 17, 2012 an M-class flare exploded from the sun. The eruption also shot out a burst of solar particles traveling at nearly the speed of light that reached Earth about 20 minutes after the light from the flare. An M-class flare is considered a "moderate" flare, at least ten times less powerful than the largest X-class flares, but the particles sent out on May 17 were so fast and energetic that when they collided with atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they caused a shower of particles to cascade down toward Earth's surface. The shower created what's called a ground level enhancement (GLE).

This graph shows the neutrons detected by a neutron detector from May 16 through May 18, 2012. The peak on May 17 represents an increase in the number of neutrons detected, a phenomenon dubbed a ground level enhancement. This graph shows the neutrons detected by a neutron detector at the University of Oulu in Finland from May 16 through May 18, 2012. The peak on May 17 represents an increase in the number of neutrons detected, a phenomenon dubbed a ground level enhancement or GLE. This was the first GLE since December of 2006.

GLEs are quite rare – fewer than 100 events have been observed in the last 70 years, since instruments were first able to detect them. Moreover, this was the first GLE of the current solar cycle--a sure sign that the sun's regular 11-year cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum.

This GLE has scientists excited for another reason, too. The joint Russian/Italian mission PAMELA, short for Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics, simultaneously measured the particles from the sun that caused the GLE. Solar particles have been measured before, but PAMELA is sensitive to the very high-energy particles that reach ground level at Earth. The data may help scientists understand the details of what causes this space weather phenomenon, and help them tease out why a relatively small flare was capable of producing the high-speed particles needed to cause a GLE.

"Usually we would expect this kind of ground level enhancement from a giant coronal mass ejection or a big X-class flare," says Georgia de Nolfo, a space scientist who studies high speed solar particles at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "So not only are we really excited that we were able to observe these particularly high energy particles from space, but we also have a scientific puzzle to solve."

The path to this observation began on Saturday, May 5, when a large sunspot rotated into view on the left side of the sun. The sunspot was as big as about 15 Earths, a fairly sizable active region, though by no means as big as some of the largest sunspots that have been observed on the sun. Dubbed Active Region 1476, the sunspots had already shown activity on the back side of the sun—as seen by a NASA mission called the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) -- so scientists were on alert for more. Scientists who study high-energy particles from the sun had been keeping their eye out for just such an active region because they had seen no GLEs since December of 2006.

In addition, they had high hopes that the PAMELA mission, which had focused on cosmic rays from outside our galaxy could now be used to observe solar particles. Such "solar cosmic rays" are the most energetic particles that can be accelerated at or near the sun.

But there was a hitch: the satellite carrying the PAMELA instruments were not currently usable since they were in calibration mode. Scientists including de Nolfo and another Goddard researcher, Eric Christian, let the PAMELA collaboration know that this might be the chance they had been waiting for and they convinced the Russian team in charge of the mission to turn the instruments back on to science mode.

"And then the active region pretty much did nothing for two weeks," says Christian. "But just before it disappeared over the right side of the sun, it finally erupted with an M-class flare."

Bingo. Neutron monitors all over the world detected the shower of neutrons that represent a GLE. Most of the time the showers are not the solar energetic particles themselves, but the resultant debris of super-fast particles slamming into atoms in Earth’s atmosphere. The elevated levels of neutrons lasted for an hour.

Simultaneously, PAMELA recorded the incoming solar particles up in space, providing one of the first in-situ measurements of the stream of particles that initiated a GLE. Only the early data has been seen so far, but scientists have high hopes that as more observations are relayed down to Earth, they will be able to learn more about the May 17 onslaught of solar protons, and figure out why this event triggered a GLE when earlier bursts of solar protons in January and March, 2012 didn't.

PAMELA is a space-borne experiment of the WiZard collaboration, which is an international collaboration between Italian (I.N.F.N. – Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), Russian, German and Swedish institutes, realized with the main support of the Italian (ASI) and Russian (Roscosmos) Space Agencies.

100% agreement. Humans nowadays are like children playing with fire. "Knowing more and more about less and less". Not see the big picture, how Natures' Laws really working in balance. Knowledge without deep wisdom but instead motivated by greed and lust for power leads to "horrible unbeneficial works, meant to destroy the world".

Could it also be there there is an energy form that man has not yet discovered, and therefore does not detect? maybe we can see the effects of it, like the wind in the trees, but perhaps we've been overlooking the source all this time.

We're monitoring x-rays, UV, magnetism, neutrons, etc... But I'm of the school of thought that there are still undiscovered things in the universe.

Maybe it's time to monitor a new part of the spectrum, or maybe there's a completely new spectrum.

Of course, it's always possible that it is something we already know about, only it's behaving in a way that we did not know about.

Have you ever wondered why we have not advanced further in order to explore other worlds?

My pov. The Universe says NO WAY! Look what you've done to your own planet. How can you assume I'll allow you to take all your filth, poisons, diseases, bacteria, (germs) to another planet. Not to mention the power trip, belief in destruction, attitude, hatred and total disrespect for everyone but yourselves.

The first thing we'd want to do is gun down anything different from ourselves.

I honestly believe that man has to earn it, before he is allowed to have new adventures outside of earth. Or in man's stupidity and arrogance, might show dark creatures the way back to earth. (more of them.)

perhaps was not the sun that initiated the response.
maybe it was from outside and created pulse in both sun and earth and every other planet

Here's another example, only much older: http://www.sott.net/articles/show/24...-in-Tree-Rings

Mysterious Radiation Burst Recorded in Tree Rings

Auroras are seen when bursts of charged particles hit Earth's atmosphere — but there is no record of these occurring at the same time as the 14C increase in tree rings.

Just over 1,200 years ago, the planet was hit by an extremely intense burst of high-energy radiation of unknown cause, scientists studying tree-ring data have found.

The radiation burst, which seems to have hit between ad 774 and ad 775, was detected by looking at the amounts of the radioactive isotope carbon-14 in tree rings that formed during the ad 775 growing season in the Northern Hemisphere. The increase in 14C levels is so clear that the scientists, led by Fusa Miyake, a cosmic-ray physicist from Nagoya University in Japan, conclude that the atmospheric level of 14C must have jumped by 1.2% over the course of no longer than a year, about 20 times more than the normal rate of variation. Their study is published online in Nature today1.

"The work looks pretty solid," says Daniel Baker, a space physicist at the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder, Colorado. "Some very energetic event occurred in about ad 775."

Exactly what that event was, however, is more difficult to determine.

The 14C isotope is formed when highly energetic radiation from outer space hits atoms in the upper atmosphere, producing neutrons. These collide with nitrogen-14, which then decays to 14C. (The fact that this is always happening because of background radiation is what produces a continuous source of 14C for radiocarbon dating.)

    Cosmic puzzle

The only known events that can produce a 14C spike are floods of γ-rays from supernova explosions or proton storms from giant solar flares. But neither seems likely, Miyake says, because each should have been large enough to have had other effects that would have been observed at the time.

A massive supernova, for example, should have been bright enough to produce a 'new' star visible even in the daytime, as was the case for two known supernovae in ad 1006 and ad 1054. Such an explosion would have needed to be brighter than either of these, Miyake says, because those events were not large enough to leave traces in the 14C record.

It is possible, he says, that the proposed event might have occurred in the far southern skies, where astronomers of the era wouldn't have seen it. But still, he says, if it did happen, today's X-ray and radio astronomers should have found signs of a "tremendously bright" remnant of the explosion.

As for solar flares, he says, anything that could have produced the required amount of super-high-energy protons would have vastly exceeded the most intense solar outburst ever recorded. There should have been a historical record of extraordinary auroras - not to mention that such a gigantic flare would probably have destroyed the ozone layer, with devastating ecological consequences.

Baker, however, thinks that Miyake's team may have been too quick to rule out a solar flare. Flares are sometimes associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - huge eruptions of magnetically charged plasma from the Sun's atmosphere that send streams of charged particles towards Earth. It might be possible, he says, for CMEs to be accompanied by conditions in which an unusual number of protons are accelerated to super-high energies, even without the flare itself being "ridiculously strong".

"We know much more these days about how important proton acceleration is at the shock fronts that precede CME structures as they propagate towards Earth," Baker says. "I would like to think about whether a strong CME moving directly towards Earth could have produced the intense proton population that impacted Earth's atmosphere."

"It would be fascinating," Baker adds, "if there were some record in China or in the Middle East that reported powerful aurora or some other such event" around the same time as the observed 14C increase.

It makes me wonder if a GLE is caused by a rapid weakening of the earth's magnetic field. If an M-class flare can do this imagine what an X-class could do.

    hi vicky,
i've spent a little time there but mostly meatworld beckons this week here at home.
attended a wood gasifier gettogether in indiana, moved an amish family last weekend to a new farm, dealing with 8" of rain wiping out all hopes of the garden this year at the moment, and trying to just stay in the game...

don't worry, the pole shift is coming, and the high wierdness such as indicated by this thread will continue to increase in an exponential fashion...

Very sorry to hear of the 8" of rain and your garden Jed. I know how much you enjoy gardening and that is terrible. We had a terrible storm here tuesday with very high winds and torrential rains and luckily my garden was spared. I was on the phone to a friend who lives 10 miles south of me and she said large hail was coming down on her garden and was destroying it. Her garden was ruined three years ago because of hail so my heart went out to her and her hubby who does all that work. When the storm came through, I scooped up my little dog and we cuddled on the couch as I prayed to God for a huge bubble of protection over my home and gardens. I kept envisioning the bubble so maybe it woked.

I hope you get to replant and all works out.

    Blessings to ya'
