Saying good bye to a family member

    All,
Been awhile since I posted here, Hoping to get some prayers for my family member we have scheduled to put to sleep on Friday. She has a been huge part of our family for the last 11 years and now at 15 years old she is not able to function anymore, Still trying to deal with having to make this decision and moving forward.
She is a 15 year old Siberian Husky that has ran into major hip issues. I know I will miss her dearly and my wife will be losing her best friend

Thanks for your replies. I have made arrangements to have her go to sleep in the comfort of her own home. Seems the finality of it is just now sinking in. Really gonna miss the old girl

I appreciate your thoughts but our girl is 15 years old and has outlived her life expectancy by a few years
Probably best for us to ensure she does not suffer anymore
Gonna be a tough few days, but I think we are doing the best thing

When it's time to make decisions it is hard. You are doing the right thing. No need for your fur baby to hurt or be miserable. I've been there a couple times, yes it hurts because they have been faithful, loyal and giving so much love.

    My thoughts are with you.

Boy do we know this feeling in our home. We have an old hound dog that we are almost to this point as well. She is my dh's best friend. She even has her own recliner right next to his. He has said we will never even have another dog as it will be so hard.
So I can assure you that you are getting prayers from our home to yours.

I feel your pain....not long ago, I had to have a beloved Pug put to sleep...he was 14 and still healthy, but lost his vision and hearing, in the past year, and had no quality of life, with those losses. It was the hardest thing to take him for his last ride to the vet's.

But, a week later, we bought a little Chihuahua, and altho we still miss our Pug dearly, this little guy has filled our lives with so much joy, entertainment and love.

I highly recommend that you consider getting another pet to share your love, as well. It would not only be good therapy for you, but bring happiness to another life that would be returned in spades!

I second NBCsurvivor's comment. I hate seeing these threads (although it helps to share - the support received from TB2k when I went through it a couple years ago was a great comfort) and, even if I don't add a comment, I feel the pain of each & every poster who has to make the decision to put down an old & beloved pet ... I think all of us with furry family members do, too.

Tears, prayers & hugs for your family as you say goodbye.

So sorry to hear this, prayers for you and your family. It is hard...

Matthew 6:12 - And forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. 1Thessalonians 4-16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

Those decisions are the hardest to make. You are truly torn between what is best for them, and what is best for you. I have made them, and it hurts so bad. It is really a hard thing for you, but the best for them.
My prayers for you both, you will meet again, and your friend will wait for you at the rainbow bridge.

Many prayers and thoughts to you. My rottweiler was 10 when her spinal issues left her with almost no mobility. It's so hard to say goodbye.. you have been very blessed to have your furkid for so long.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this. We did too with our dog Darby a few years ago. It was not the decision that was the hard part with Darby, who was a 16 year old lab-husky mix, it was obvious that the time had come. The hard part was making the phone call to the vet and then letting her go. We also arranged to have the vet come to our house, and that was the best way to do it for all of us. It has been over three years now and I still miss her every day, but the memories are all good and there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing she had a long, happy life with us and a death where she did not linger and suffer.

Sorry for your loss. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do is put down any of our fur kids even though we knew any other option would just mean more suffering for them. Years and more pets later I still miss every one of them. Prayers for all of you.

This is the last, best gift you can give her at this point. A dog who is so weak they aren't functional aren't happy... and they don't understand what's wrong. It IS so hard, but rest assured you are doing the right thing.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this. It is SO very hard, but is IS the last, best, most loving gift you can give your faithful companion after all those years of love shared. My thoughts are with you.

That's very considerate of you to have it done in her own quarters, surrounded by the sounds and smells that mean so much to her, rather than in the chaotic, unhappy environment of a vet's clinic. I try to do that with all of my critters, when and if I can afford it. Good man.

Thanks to each and everyone of you. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. Our baby is really having a hard time today as she is really having difficulty with her legs, Almost seems she has given up. We are spending as much quality time with her as possible and trying to allow her to rest in her chosen area. Seems the finality of it is finally setting in with me. Also thank you to the member who sent me the PM. It really helped.
I am really happy that our Vet offers the ability to perform this procedure at home. We did not want to have to do this in the sterile environment of the Vet's office

    Thanks again

It Breaks my heart to hear this. Our family has always included our pets. To lose a pet is losing a member of the family.
My daughter sent this to me when we lost our last pet in december. I hope this helps ease the pain.

    A Pet's Prayer

    My people are so precious, Lord;
I know you think so, too.
And I believe you put me here
to love them just for you.

They take such gentle care of me
    and have such tender hearts.
please use me, Lord, to comfort them
    whenever teardrops start.

They face a lot of battles
as they live and work each day.
They need me Lord, to make them smile
and show them how to play.

The world is full of people,
but sometimes real friends are few.
Please let my love and loyalty
    Remind them, Lord, of you.

And when my final moment comes,
Lord, tell them as we part.
I was a made to order gift
    from your great, loving heart.

Holding her in your arms and telling her you love her is the most precious gift you can give her.
Always remember she will be waiting for you at the "Rainbow Bridge" and you will cross it together.

Thanks again for all the comfort and support you have all provided
I had the Vet scheduled for 4:30 today and unfortunatley she collapsed and passed around 10:00 this morning
I tried to get the Vet to come on an emergency call but by the time they arrived it was too late
I only wish I had known she would deteriote so fast, I would have scheduled this last week
Guilt is setting in a bit as I did not want her to suffer in he rlast moments
The only saving grace for me is she passed in her own home with the people who loved her close by to assist

After looking back, we have had her for twelve years and got her when she was 5
She obviously lived a very long life and will always be remembered

    thanks again

I am so very sorry for your loss; it's tough to lose a friend that has been a part of your family for so long but she is at Gods side now and pain free.

I will be praying for her and your family this evening.

    For our beloved Taush

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My prayers are with you, and thank you for posting this. I had to put my Weim Shadow to sleep last week. She was my favorite dog of our three, and I know she loved me the most of all of the humans. I birthed her puppies, had my hand inside her for 45 min on the first because it was stuck. Going through that solidified some bond between us. I miss her so very much. I sympathize with your loss.
