Sea-Level Rise Looms as a Major Threat for Coastal Cities, Infrastructure

Sea-level rise driven by climate change threatens key components of the nation's energy infrastructure such as power plants and oil and gas operations, a panel of state officials and scientists warned Congress Thursday.

In New York City, 10 of 17 power plants sit in a floodplain that could become more saturated in the next half-century, city official Adam Freed told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. In south Florida, a rise of 6 inches of seawater could cripple half of the area's flood-control capacity, said Florida Center for Environmental Studies director Leonard Berry. And in Louisiana, lawmakers are worried about Highway 1 -- a thin roadway vulnerable to inundation that links to some of the nation's richest oil and gas resources.

"The key problem is that rising seas raise the launchpad for coastal storm surges and tilt the odds towards disaster," said Ben Strauss, a scientist at Climate Central, at the committee hearing. "Just a few extra inches could mean the difference to flood a family's basement -- or New York City's subway system, disabling it for months."

Much of the hearing focused on previously released scientific studies on sea-level rise, a phenomenon where warming temperatures expand the ocean's volume through thermal expansion and the melting of ice sheets. Current projections indicate that the global sea average could rise from 0.2 meter to a high of 2 meters by the end of the century.

But effects could be felt long before that -- Strauss said that levels could increase by 8 inches or more by 2050, on top of 8 inches of rise already occurring since 1880. He outlined research last month showing that what are now once-a-century flood events could become one-in-20-year events along the New Jersey shore and annual events in Los Angeles (ClimateWire, March 15).

At more than half the 55 sites Strauss studied, storm surges on top of sea rise have "better than even chances" of rising 4 feet above the high tide line by 2030.

Back in the early 80s when I was in school, this stuff was just starting to be talked about.

Back then, lots of the US coast was supposed to be under several inches to a few feet of water between 2000 and 2010. Just more of the same...

I do not believe sea levels are rising. I have personally observed over the span of 50 years a small estuary on the Oregon coast. It is slowly becoming land, marshy, salty land. The reason for this is that the tides no longer go in and scour out the little bay as they used to. It has in the past had a little fishing lake that was about 75 feet deep. Its depth is now at about 20-30 feet and the bottom is filled with shallow-water kelp. This is NOT because of rising sea level; this is because the tides can no longer sweep past the oceanfront barrier and suck out the sand that is routinely deposited. You can now walk clean across the bay at low tide; not something you used to be able to do. I have puzzled on this for years and am pretty sure that the dynamic of the tides swiftly retreating is what used to draw the sand back out, especially during storms. Not happening any more. I cry BS on sea levels rising globally.

I came across a very early photo from the 1850's, of a local bay, with a beached coaster unloading its cargo. There was the full tide mark (seaweed lines, etc), and the low water mark (the tide was out as the coaster was beached). The tidal range was as near as could be made out, identical to today, and reaching the same points. The village behind the beach is at sea level along the small valley bottom, and any increase in sea level, this past 150+ years, and that village would be gone.

On the south coast from me, there's a big bay that's a popular holiday place. The old coastline is about a mile inland from todays shoreline. Around the 16th century, there was a massive storm, that filled that bay in with sand, and massive sand dunes.

If the sea level had risen a few inches since then, those vulnerable sand dunes, would be long gone, and the shoreline would be back where it was prior to that massive storm of the 16th Century (must have been a mind boggling storm to have piled up so much sand).

This whole sea level nonsense is deliberate scaremongering, to me as bad as shouting 'FIRE!' in a cinema where there is no fire, and people should be going to jail for it.

PS I have had loonies pushing this stuff trying to convince me that the sea level has gone up by an average of 3cm a year this past Century or more. They will not have it that it hasn't happened, some try say that it is 3cm a decade, to sound more reasonable. Well 3cm a year is 3 mtrs a Century (10 ft), and 3 cm a decade is 0.3 mtrs (12") a Century. It's not showing up on the shorelines (even coastal survey points are showing no change), so I ask them just where over the horizon all these massive amounts of water are stacked up, because the 'level' part of sea level, is completely lost on them.

I think what they are doing, is 'conveniently' measuring sea levels at neap tides when there is high atmospheric pressure, up to and including spring tides when there is low atmospheric pressure, along with moon phases, to try and pass off fraudulently that 'something is going on' when it is just normal tidal range and normal atmospheric range and normal lunar influences.

Just like everything else, they don't understand how tides work or atmospheric pressure works or lunar influences work, unless it suits their propaganda.

Yes, I agree that what is being passed off as flooding from global warming, is really shifts in the tectonic plates. We had some reports of some Island Nation's in the Pacific Ocean I think its somewhere around Funafuti or Nurakita and they claim the country is flooding due to global warming, but the earth quake activity in that region over the last few years the plates are moving and the Islands are sinking and slipping below the water level.

That's because the plates upon which those countries sit are sinking! They love plate tetonics until it starts interfering with their global climate change hysteria. The Maori, New Zealand, have a prophecy about Australia/NZ sinking and another island rising up to take it's place, which many believe to be another atlantis story.

Yes, I agree that what is being passed off as flooding from global warming, is really shifts in the tectonic plates. We had some reports of some Island Nation's in the Pacific Ocean I think its somewhere around Funafuti or Nurakita and they claim the country is flooding due to global warming, but the earth quake activity in that region over the last few years the plates are moving and the Islands are sinking and slipping below the water level.

And other places are rising up out of the seas, like Tonga for instance.
