    Thanks for bumping this thread.
I know about a week ago, the tv was on in another room, and I heard some anouncement about an upcoming show talking about lyme disease. By the time I got in the room to see when and what channel it was coming on, the anouncement was over.
This presentation and the other links should be a good info resource.

While I'm an herbalist and would love to believe that "natural" methods can cure Lyme, I've seen two people DIE of this disease, and knowing that, I can't in good conscience say that skipping antibiotics and going totally natural is wise.

Lyme is a spirochete, and it behaves very much like another spirochete- syphilis. In it's early stage, it shows skin lesions (rash) and can cause "flu-like" symptoms. If untreated, it "goes away"... that is, the symptoms resolve. But it heads into the deeper tissues- synovial fluid (the joints) and other places and starts doing damage.

It shows back up later in a secondary stage, but is still curable, albeit with much longer courses of antibiotics.

Late stage in both diseases cause dementia, heart damage, and other permanent, and usually fatal problems.

For sure, if I knew I was showing brain symptoms with a Lyme confirmation, I'd probably use some of the herbs, but I'd take them WITH the appropriate antibiotics. It's a nasty, ugly disease.

Japanese Knotweed in the Treatment of Lyme Disease

Anyone who is even slightly familiar with Japanese Knotweed knows that it is tenacious and difficult to eradicate. The plants seem rather intelligent, adapting to the various methods of “warfare” thrown at them. Even small pieces of root can repopulate quickly, taking full advantage of suitable circumstances to run rampant.

Anyone who is even slightly familiar with Lyme disease knows that it is tenacious and extremely difficult to treat. The spirochetes that cause it seem rather intelligent, adapting to the various methods of “warfare” thrown at them. Even small populations can survive for long periods of time in an imperfect environment, just biding their time until conditions improve and will take full advantage of suitable circumstances to run rampant throughout their host.

Oh dear. There seems to be striking similarities between these two entirely different species. I point this out to illustrate that the qualities inherent in Japanese Knotweed are precisely the factors needed to combat the obstinate and frequently debilitating spirochetes that cause Lyme disease. You could refer to the overall personality of Knotweed as a “doctrine of signatures” of sorts; the survival traits natural to this plant are powerful indicators of the benefits that we may utilize in our quest for health, particularly when confronted with a powerful adversary like Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete, a microorganism carried by ticks and other biting insects such as mosquitoes, biting flies, mites and fleas. A spirochete is a gram-negative bacterium that “screws” itself into tissue -particularly collagen- and can encapsulate quickly under adverse conditions, going dormant until its environment becomes more hospitable. Spirochetes are notably clever, and easily adapt to elude antibiotics; they can then exchange resistance information within their community and to other co-infections, making treatment ever more difficult. A close cousin of this spirochete is one that causes syphilis, and consequently there is strong evidence that Lyme can be transmitted sexually as well as through mother’s milk, saliva and in utero.

Japanese Knotweed is a native of Asia, but was introduced in Britain in the nineteenth century. The clones introduced in Europe reproduce through their rhizomes, not via seeds so all the plants there (and likely here in the US also) are in essence, one giant female. Known as the King of Weeds (Let’s change that to Queen, shall we?), the hardy Japanese Knotweed is the best known source of resveratrol and trans-resveratrol, naturally occurring compounds that are antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-spirochetal and have a myriad of other health benefits as well.

Plants like Knotweed produce resveratrol in order to combat disease and to become more tolerant to environmental extremes. Not long ago, red grape skins were the primary source of resveratrol in supplements, and the impetus behind the theory of the “French Paradox” which implied that the generous inclusion of red wine with a high fat diet prevented heart disease. Research has found that Polygonum cuspidatum, abundant and readily available, contains much more concentrated resveratrol and trans-resveratrol than grapes, making Knotweed a much preferred commercial source of this valuable antioxidant. It’s unlikely that the French predilection for pinot noir will be replaced by Knotweed anytime soon, so don’t throw away your wine glasses just yet.

Resveratrol can help lower cholesterol and regulate blood pressure and has shown promise for the treatment of certain cancers, breast cancer in particular; as a complimentary treatment it can raise white blood cell levels during chemotherapy and radiation. During menopause and senior years, resveratrol can help protect bone density levels and increase the mineral content in bone tissue.

Japanese Knotweed is effective against a variety of organisms including the Lyme co-infection bartonella, leptospira, gonorrhea, and meningitis; its strong antifungal qualities make it especially inhibitive toward Candida albicans. It is also a powerful antiviral agent, effective in the treatment of herpes, ECHO viruses and various strains of influenza such as SARS and Asian flu (which in my opinion, is a far more attractive option than vaccinations of questionable origin).

What makes Knotweed so valuable when it comes to treating Lyme disease is that it not only inhibits the spirochetes, it is also markedly anti-inflammatory, reducing joint pain, swelling and fever. The anti-inflammatory effect helps to regulate the immune system and prevents it from being over burdened; its modulating effect makes it useful for many autoimmune ailments. Knotweed supports the central nervous system and protects the heart, making it especially valuable in the treatment of Lyme-related carditis.

Lyme disease affects more than the joints; symptoms can range from pronounced fatigue, fever and aches to foggy thinking, memory lapses, muscular spasms, rashes and vision problems. The spirochetes that cause Lyme make a meal of collagen tissue, and their favorite restaurants include your joints, skin, eyes and brain. Knotweed has a strong ability to protect those tender areas, stimulating microcirculation and directing other herbs to otherwise difficult to treat regions of the body. The constituents in Knotweed are also able to cross the blood brain barrier (BBB), protecting delicate cerebral tissue and harmonizing blood flow. Regular supplementation of Polygonum cuspidatum during or after an active infection will help sharpen mental function and relieve pain throughout the body.
During effective treatment of Lyme disease, patients frequently experience what is known as a Herxheimer reaction. A “Herx” response is a healing crisis of exacerbated overall symptoms; fevers spike, joint pain becomes more pronounced, fatigue may increase –basically the patient feels absolutely awful. The reason for the aggravated symptoms is a massive die-off of the pathogenic spirochetes creating a high volume of toxicity in the blood. Believe it or not, this is a good sign: the treatment is working. It doesn’t seem like good news to anyone experiencing it however, and this is another instance where Japanese Knotweed can come to the rescue by reducing Herx symptoms and aiding in systemic detoxification.

Lyme expert and Master Herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner recommends a core protocol of four to five herbs in the treatment of Lyme disease: Japanese Knotweed, Andrographis, Cat’s Claw, Smilax and Astragalus. Since the publication of his book, Healing Lyme in 2005, thousands of people have reported significant improvement if not complete relief from their Lyme symptoms using this basic protocol. Treatment works best when an experienced herbalist adjusts their healing strategy according to each individual’s needs and be aware that Knotweed is contraindicated with pregnancy and blood-thinning medications.

In Vitro Effectiveness of Samento and Banderol Herbal Extracts on the Different Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi
by Akshita Datar, Navroop Kaur, Seema Patel, David F. Luecke, and Eva Sapi, PhD

Abstract: (full article with charts, etc at link)

A tick-borne, multisystemic disease, Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi has grown into a major public health problem during the last 10 years. The primary treatment for chronic Lyme disease is administration of various antibiotics. However, relapse often occurs when antibiotic treatment is discontinued. One possible explanation for this is that B. burgdorferi become resistant to antibiotic treatment, by converting from their vegetative spirochete form into different round bodies and/or into biofilmlike colonies. There is an urgent need to find novel therapeutic agents that can eliminate all these different morphologies of B. burgdorferi. In this study, two herbal extracts, Samento and Banderol, as well as doxycycline (one of the primary antibiotics for Lyme disease treatment) were tested for their in vitro effectiveness on several of the different morphological forms of B. burgdorferi (spirochetes, round bodies, and biofilmlike colonies) using fluorescent, darkfield microscopic, and BacLight viability staining methods. Our results demonstrated that both herbal agents, but not doxycycline, had very significant effects on all forms of B. burgdorferi, especially when used in combination, suggesting that herbal agents could provide an effective therapeutic approach for Lyme disease patients.
Note that both Samento (Cat's Claw) and Banderol herbal extracts are available at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A1PCOJ2GDB6VEZ and are part of the protocol mentioned a few posts ago.

I know - but check out the whole scientific article in the link I just posted (what I posted was just the abstract). Apparently, some recent research is showing that the antibiotic will kill the spiral form but not its other forms. Antibiotic is still recommended for early infections, but for later infections, antibiotic apparently will only kill the bacteria that is in the spiral form and not the other forms it takes. It's very confusing (and a little scary) how this disease behaves. No one is questioning (certainly not me!!!!) the wisdom of antibiotics in early infections. In later infections, though, if you go the antibiotic route, it sounds like you have to do it multiple times in order to catch the bug in its spiral form. Apparently these two herbs, used in conjunction (most protocols have them going back and forth), will penetrate the biofilm the bacteria makes and can actually get it in all its forms. I'm just posting what I'm finding. Different protocols have different philosophies and it sounds like few people are infected the same way. Every person has a unique infection, it sounds like.

I'm really scared of the dementia aspect of this. I can tell that I am worse than i was in April when I posted that "brain fog" thread. There are two Lyme doctors near me that have had great success. However, my insurance is not going to pay for it and just a consultation with the best one costs nearly $500. That doesn't include any tests he might order or subsequent treatment. Before I bankrupt my family, I HAVE to try something more affordable.

We finally found a doctor this week who was helpful. Had to travel three hours each way to him (he's in Jacksonville AL), but it was worth the trip just to have a doctor ask, "have you been bitten by a tick? This sounds like Lyme disease to me." Hallelujah! Hubby has been making the rounds of doctors, getting nowhere but frustrated. The last doctor he saw, an infectious disease guy who was supposed to be good, decided that the horrible joint (and now muscle) pain, sensitivity to cold, headaches, chills and shaking, fatigue, difficulty getting words out, etc. were all due to...ready for this?....sleep apnea. Yep, sleep apnea. What a waste of time and money going to him!

We finally have the beginning of a plan to take on this monster called Lyme. There is sooooo much to learn about it, makes my head hurt sometimes, but I'm determined to do what it takes to get my husband back to health.
I'm happy to hear you guys found this! My micro instructor came from a research project on the Lone Star tick/Lyme Dz at Jacksonville U and there are some major differences on how to find Lyme spread by this tick vs. the ticks "up north." I was amazed as it's NOT well known and I think a lot of these "odd" diseases that people have are actually Lyme; especially in the Southern states where no one really thinks about Lymes - especially Dr. Smith down in Podunk (Dr. Smith is a "well-known," usually more mature physician in any rural area who doen't keeping up with the world in my nursing classes).

Anyway, at the moment I can't remember any specifics and my slides are on my external hard drive somewhere under mass quantities of paper. Google "Starry (spelled w/2 r's) + tick and you may be able to find out more if you'd like. It's interesting how differently it appears.

I went to the Dr.at the health department, and told them about our dog with lyme disease, and that I needed to be tested for it. They wouldn't do it, and made fun of me. I was very upset.

I have found that the only thing to get me back on my feet after a flare up is a high dose of vitamin D. I am exhausted and have terrible ankle pain, and fight to get back to "normal" for weeks. After a few days of 10,000 units of vitamin D, I can at least start doing a little bit around the house again.
    I could make it cheaper!!!

Unfortunately, that's typical medical behavior when you ask about Lyme, Susan. The doctors who acknowledge and treat Lyme are few and far between. Many of them treat you like you're a idiot for even thinking about Lyme.

Firedance, thanks for the google suggestion for more info!

Summerthyme, I agree with you in that it seems the way to go is with both antibiotics and "naturals". In all the reading I've done on this, it seems the people who have achieved the best results tend to use a "blended" approach.

I've talked recently with a master herbalist in my area. She had Lyme back in the 90's and says Samento (Cat's Claw) cured it. Personally, I'm not sure she's totally over it because now she has fibromyalgia, which is common in Lyme patients.

Hubby is having a great day today with no pain, thank the Lord! Those days are very rare.

I just want to add that if you are in a southern state, be SURE to have them test you for STARRY (rather than Lyme's) and if you can't get that to happen call the folks at Jacksonville U (Alabama) and get some referrals. This is sooo typically misdiagnosed in this area and you owe it to yourselves to be tested in the proper manner. I will try to get in touch with my micro instructor and get some names/tests and forward out to you. It really blew my mind that this had been going on for quite some time and I (who keeps up with med news) had not ever heard the details until this class and that's only because I lucked up on this particular instructor. More later!

Marty Ross, MD on Banderol and Samento in chronic Lyme and Associated Diseases

    (also video at link)

I am having quite a bit of success using the herbs Banderol and Samento (toa free cats claw from Nutramedix) even when prescriptive antibiotics are no longer working. I added these two herbs into my treatments in August of 2010 based on a research paper published in the July 2010 Townsend Letter. Eva Sapi, PhD and her research group showed that Banderol and Samento treat the various forms of the Lyme germ and reduce biofilm colonies.

When I first started to work with Banderol and Samento, I introduced them into the treatments of my patients that had plateaued on prescriptive antibiotics at a good level of health. During these plateaus I had tried various prescriptive regimens targeted at all three forms of the lyme germs and treated for biofilms with lumbrokinase to move the treatments forward without success. Many of these patients had energy levels of 80% of normal with minimal body pain and good cognition. For these patients I offered Banderol and Samento as a means of preventing recurrence off of prescriptive antibiotics and to possibly move the treatments forward. I started the Banderol and Samento at 10 drop 2 times a day and added 1 drop per dose per day till each patient was at 20 drops 2 times a day.

To my surprise, I observed that nearly 90 percent of patients I placed on this protocol had marked improvements in fatigue by the follow up appointments at 2 months. Some reported significant die-off reactions. Eventually based on my patients’ observed and reported successes, I started to work with Banderol and Samento in the middle of treatment courses and now at the initiation of treatments.

I am pleased for my patients because across the board I am observing good benefits. In the beginning and middle of treatments, I am finding success with Banderol and Samento that compare with those of prescriptive antibiotic regimens. At the end of treatments or when a patient has plateaued, I am finding that these two herbs also move treatments forward.

Working with these two herbs, I have changed my opinion of the benefit of herbal anti-microbials. In the past I recommended teasel, cumanda, andrographis, and cats claw in various combinations and in rotations similar to those found in the Cowden Protocol. In my practice I found success with herbal anti-microbials about 60% of the time. This compares with the 90% chance of improvement that I have observed with prescriptive antibiotic protocols. Naturally, when given a choice between the herbs and prescriptive anti-microbials with these observed success rates, most of my patients elected prescriptive regimens. That is changing now and I believe that the Samento/Banderol combination provides a very effective option that may approach the effectiveness of the prescriptive regimens.

    Method of Action:
So what is going on here? Based on the work of Sapi et al, I think this combination effectively kills the various forms of Lyme borrellia while it limits biofilm formation. Biofilms are layers of slime produced by germs. They may limit anti-microbial effects and hide germs from killing by the immune system. Sapi's work shows that Samento and Banderol have a synergistic effect where the sum of the killing is greater than the individual effects of each herb. My success in moving plateaued treatments forward even suggest that these herbs can kill germs in dormant phases where prescriptive antibiotics do not work. I am not clear from Dr. Sapi’s work if these two herbs break up biofilms or if they kill the germs in the biofilms which results in the biofilm decline. In the end it does not really matter, because for my patients, this combination works.

    Dosage:
Over time, because of die-off reactions, I have changed how I start the regimen. Now I start treatments at 5 drops 2 times a day of each herb and increase the dosing every 2 days by 1 drop per dose till a patient is taking 15 drops 2 times a day. With this approach I am finding limited die-off reactions. One more thing, based on the manufacturers recommendations, I advise that the herbs are taken at least 15 minutes from each other and that they are taken on an empty stomach. With this regimen a person generally needs 2 bottles of Banderol and 2 bottles of Samento a month.

I started the Buhner protocol, because it is relatively inexpensive and I could get everything locally. I figured if I started responding to this, then I might consider other things. In less than 24 hours, I hurt absolutely everywhere, from my head to my ankles. So, something is happening.

Deena, did you wind up with a diagnosis for him? Is he in treatment now? If not, the Cowden protocol or Buhner protocol is a way to get started. Apparently, many LLMD's use one of them along with antibiotics. Sometimes instead of antibiotics.

Not a clear diagnosis. The last doctor said the symptoms sounded like Lyme to him and he put him on Doxy, but ran another test and it was still negative. He also said that some patients never test positive, but definitely have the symptoms. Hubby is also taking several different supplements now, some are on the Cowden protocol list. I'm not sure if I've read Buhner's yet. Feel like I have simply because I've read SO very much, but I can't remember it all.

He has an appointment with the rheumatologist Tuesday. Next step appears to be a neurologist. We are sick of doctors and such!

Deena, there is a doctor in Texas who has a pain device approved by the FDA and hopefully it can be paid for with insurance, his name is Jerry Tennant, and his device is the Bio-modulator. I'm going to see Dr. Mark Starr in a week or so and am hoping he can figure out what is wrong with me and get me a prescrip for the Bio-Modulator. I may have Lyme, I have a lot of the symptoms on top of thyroid and adrenal issues.

Be aware that Cat's Claw is a goiterogen, it slows the thyroid.

I've been bitten by many ticks and I thought I had a brown recluse bite on the back of my calf 12 years ago as it had a bullseye pattern, but it was red, white and blue just like recluse bites, and I had flu like symptoms for about a month after being bitten. I've had bouts of chronic fatigue for decades, but never related it to the tick bites-what caught my ear was a man on Noory's show saying one of the symptoms is crackling noise in the neck.

I lived in Florida and was for a very short time in an apartment that was so infested with fleas that they were visible as dark shadows on the carpet. They bit me on the feet so much that the tops of my feet swelled up and were really nasty, I had scars there for a long time from the scratching (I am apparently allergic to flea bites). I didn't know Lyme could be transferred by fleas, and I've never heard of STARRY (I found it spelled stari), maybe I should look into it, my health is really plummeting and my memory is severely impaired now. Total amnesia for things such as movies I viewed only a month ago, etc. I use to have a near photographic memory.

Ok, here's an unorthodox treatment some of you who have tried everything might look into.

    http://www.advancedcelltraining.com/

I went to see Dr. Mark Starr Wednesday in Phoenix, when I told him I thought I might have Lyme he said "I don't doubt you do" then told me to look into this web site, he said Mr. Gary Blier has had miraculous results with many illnesses and even trauma from childhood and other lifelong stressors. It is an interesting site and I plan on contacting him to do some work with me. It seems woo woo, but know such things work, but am somewhat mystified as to how or why, I'm just glad they do. He mentions Lyme, which is why I took the time to post this. They offer a free DVD and booklet which I'm waiting for.

If you can afford it, I would encourage you to look into Dr. Starr's treatment, he utilizes many methods of ferreting out the root cause of your illness and attacking that instead of treating the symptoms. He told me I have a very shot immune system, caused by the root canals and empty tooth sockets from dentists pulling healthy teeth before they put braces on me. The sockets usually become infected, along with root canals. He gave me the name of someone in Boston who can remove them, and another who can make sure that all the infection has been removed along side the dentist, to ensure recovery. My dad has ONE root canal and it's destroyed his health. He has 2 amalgams that were supposed to have been replaced with non metal, but the dentist ripped him off.

Anyway, I've discovered that root canals can indeed ruin your health and make you so weak that any invader can wreak havoc on your health and immune system. Oh, Dr. Starr uses a voltometer to take readings of the crowns, fillings and sockets and gives you a readout of what each tooth's voltage is reading. Mine were nearly sky high. He uses Dr. Jerry Tennant's information to help determine things.

Weft and Warp, thanks for asking! I hope you have an easy recovery. Hubby is up and down with his pain. Most of the day today, he said it was at a 1 or less, which was a blessing and has happened a few times in the last couple of weeks. I'm hoping its a good sign, but don't know. Then after he got home and relaxed, the pain came back, especially in his shoulders. He feels like he's lost a lot of strength, and he definitely can't do things that he used to do easily. Its very frustrating and depressing. Our youngest daughter is trying to talk him into going to the emergency room at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. She has talked to them several times about his condition and feels like they might get to the bottom of this, but so far he's resisting doing that.

Flippper, what you've said is quite interesting, although I tend to think such things are woo woo too. My hubby has had a number of root canals, although none lately.

Bump to see how everyone is doing with their Lyme protocols..

Also read recently about couple of people who got Lyme and tick bites couple years back from ticks they brought in to their home in their real Christmas trees. Something to think about also those wood piles are great tick hiding places. My point, ticks are not just a problem in warm weather.

Buy a rebounder they can be bought for any sized person. There is nothing that comes close to exercising on one of them. You must noise breathe while exercising otherwise it is counter productive.

Treatment Protocol for Lyme Disease and any other associated infections. Created under the guidance of Dr. Jeffery Wright, ND, from the Utah Valley Health Clinic.

    http://icreateprofits.com/awesomehealth.html

    2. Herbal Therapy Treatment (Andrographis, Cat's Claw, and Japanese Knotweed)

These three herbs are part of the core protocol recommended by Stephen Buhner in his book Healing Lyme (get on Amazon).

    A. Andrographis - build up to 4 capsules 3 times per day of the whole standardized herb.

Andrographis exhibits anti-parasitic action and particularly against spirochetes. It also shows protective actions for the heart, circulatory system, and liver.

Several studies have shown that andrographis may increase the body’s resistance to infection by stimulating production of antibodies and macrophages. It also helps with the arthritis and muscle pain of Lyme disease. Buhner recommends capsules standardized to 10 percent.

I can get this on Amazon.com and at the health food store.

    B. Cat's Claw - build up to 4 capsules 3 times per day of the whole herb.

Cat's Claw (herb) may benefit people with Lyme by 1. Enhancing the immune system 2. Anti-microbial effects on the Lyme spirochete, and 3. Negate some of the effects of the Lyme neurotoxins on the cells.

Buhner recommends 500 mg. capsules and I can get this from Amazon and the health food store. He says Raintree brand is one of the best.

    C. Japanese Knotweed (Resveratrol) - build up to 4 tablets 3 times per day.

Japanese Knotweed enhances immune function, is active against bacteria including spirochetes, is anti-inflammatory for both arthritic and bacterial inflammations, protects the body against endotoxin damage, helps reduce Herxheimer reactions, and is a cardioprotector.

Buhner recommends Source Naturals for the Japanese Knotweed, which I get at the health food store.

(Note) - In rotating manner I'm going "off" these three herbs at the end of December 2008.

    3. Exercise at least one hour at a time three times per week.

The reason for the exercise is twofold, as explained in the Burr Guide.

First reason. Borellia (Lyme) will die when exposed to all but the tiniest oxygen concentrations. So the exercise can increase the oxygen throughout body tissues. I really breathe during exercise and at other times during the day when I remember.

Second reason. During exercise, the core body temperature can rise above 102 degrees, and borellia is also heat sensitive and this may weaken the spirochete and allow our body defenses to WIN.

I do this Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I've known for a while that I can't exercise hard every day. People with Lyme just don't have the energy. I do light exercise on the other days.

Note - After three months my energy level started to come up. I noticed that my workouts were a bit stronger on my "longer workout" days and on the easy days also.

    4. Kefir and Probiotics (acidophilus and other friendly intestinal micro-organisms)

The reason for this is that the antibiotics kill off the good with the bad, and you have to keep adding the good to avoid a yeast infection. Dr. Wright said to use several different probiotic supplements as well as kefir and yogurt.

Note - In January 2009 I started being able to digest some homemade goat milk kefir and have been enjoying it nearly every day. In February 2009 I'm having even more kefir (about a quart a day) and also eating some of the "mother grains".

Here is a source that tells that a natural kefir "mother" contains 42 different strains of friendly bacteria (way more than the health food store kind)!

The Kefir really seems to be helping my body to balance and reestablish a healthy gut flora. I'm able to eat healthy carbs (milk, fruit, some grains) without Candida going wild.

Note - on 3/6/09 I stopped drinking the kefir because the milk is too high in fat according to the 80/10/10 diet. My body feels much "cleaner" and less congested and I'm able to eat all the fruit I want now rather than just a little bit.

    5. Don't get behind in sleep, or become overtired.

I've noticed that the pain level (and other symptoms) become worse when I allow myself to get overtired. I do better on the days that I get good naps.

Note - I was up to four naps a day for a couple years. By about mid January 2009 I was able to get by with only three naps on most days (sometimes I still needed four naps).

    6. Diet of 80/10/10 (Read book by that name by Douglas Graham)

Update on Diet (March 15, 2009). I discovered the 80/10/10 diet and the explanation of how candida works on a high fat diet. I started this diet on 3/6/09.

My Candida infection is cured, after years of struggling with it. It only took about 36 hours once I understood the role of excess fat in the diet as it related to blood sugar problems. Now I can eat all the fruit I want, thank heavens!

To get the full description, you'd have to read a book called the 80/10/10 diet by Douglas Graham. The short version is here: When you eat fruit sugars, they go into your bloodstream quickly, and are supposed to go out of your bloodstream (into the cells) quickly. This is the normal and healthy way, and it happens this way if you are eating a very low fat diet.

However, when a high fat diet is eaten, the fat coats the walls of the blood vessels and prevents the sugars from going into the cells quickly. This causes a dangerous rise in blood sugar, leading to candida overgrowth, diabetes, and many other problems.

According to Graham, any diet over 10 percent fat is "too high fat". I didn't realize my diet was so high in fat until I read his book. I was eating loads of fat (40 to 50 percent of calories, which is easy to do). Fat is so concentrated a source of calories, it only takes a small amount to exceed 10 percent. Anyway, the difference in how my body handles fruit is incredible.

    7. Multivitamin (Using Equilib right now)

    8. Alternative Detox helps

Dry Skin Brushing and Oil Pulling (once each daily in the morning). More info here on oil pulling. I use sesame oil. More info on dry skin brushing. I've been doing these for a couple of years prior to starting antibiotic treatment in Nov 2008.

    9. Laughter, Prayer, Singing, and Positive Visualization Daily

Laugh 30 times per day (at least). With little boys this can be done. I sing in the shower and while I jump on the mini trampoline.

When we need a good laugh, we just have Cayson do some antics, or copy some of the things we do.

I visualize telling people that I'm totally healing, running powerfully in the mountains, and I imagine little white rabbits inside me eating up the orange spirochetes and cysts. Special "Bomb Rabbits" blow up the hard cysts and then eat the pieces.

    10. Niacin (Vitamin B3) (work up to 1000 mg 3x daily)

I started this on 11/19/2008 with 500 mg 3x daily. It causes a "flush" and brings extra oxygen to the capillaries along with the extra blood. The extra oxygen help to kill off the Lyme spirochetes, which are sensitive to oxygen. About ten days later I increased to 1000 mg 3x daily.

Note - I increased up to 1500 milligrams about the middle of December, and kept this up until the end of December 2008. I'm taking a break from this at that time.

    11. Treatment with the GB4000 Frequency Generator (Rife Machine Type)

After much research and comparison I decided on the GB4000 frequency generator.

Out of all the treatments I'm doing, I think the rife treatments are helping the most. I get herxheimer reactions, and then sustained improvement. I do a treatment about every 4 days, and am using some "supportive" frequencies as well as the Lyme spirochete killing frequencies.

    12. Swedish Massage

I found a Chiropractor who is also a licensed massage therapist and a certified lymphologist and he gives me just what I need. I'm trying to do this every week or every other week.

    13. Energetic Engaging Creative Work

When I work on projects that are exciting and engaging and purposeful, I feel an extra energy flow. So I try and find those project that my heart really wants to do, while still providing value to my customers.

I try to minimize or delegate or automate any dull repetitive work.

    14. Castor Oil Massage

This treatment was inspired from the Lord. I started about the middle of December 2008. In the morning after a brief stretch and workout I rub a few teaspoons of castor oil into my abdomen. This is much simpler than using a castor oil pack (which is messy and time consuming).

I just pour a bit into a bowl and then using both hands, massage the oil into my liver area and all around the abdomen for about 8 to 10 minutes. Then I shower. This helps my bowels to flow more regularly and has nearly freed me up from having to do "colemas".

However, I believe it's having a much greater effect than that. Castor oil is a very penetrating and unique substance containing ricinoleic acid. This Riconoleic acid has been shown to be effective in preventing the growth of numerous species of viruses, bacteria, yeasts, and molds.

Research also shows that castor oil increases the production of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are the disease fighting cells of your immune system. The oil may particularly help the Peyer's patches in the intestines.

    15. Chia Seeds and Flax Seeds

This is another treatment that I didn't read about anywhere, but just decided to try. I noticed that flax seed seemed to help bowel function and reduce neurotoxin symptoms wo I thought I would try Chia Seeds which have some similar properties.

I started on December 20. In the evening, I stir 1 Tablespoon of chia seeds into about 24 ounces of water. I just use a quart mason jar and fill it about 3/4 full with water.

Then the next day I stir and drink 1/3 of the mixture with breakfast, 1/3 with lunch, and 1/3 with dinner.

I think they help "soak" up the neurotoxins, and that they also help with energy. Chia seeds have been used for energy for years.

Note - After about two weeks, I just went back to flaxseed. The Chia helps "fill me up" so much I was hardly hungry for meals. I usually take the flaxseed in the morning, in a "smoothie".

    15. Systemic Enzyme Therapy

Systemic Enzyme Therapy is on of the top ten treatments written about by Bryan Rosner. You take the enzymes between meals on an empty stomach rather than at meal times. They are enteric coated and break down in the small intestine and move into the bloodstream where they "clean up" and digest inflammation causing proteins.

I started the Systemic Enzymes (Wobenzym) on January 2, 2009. Many people have received good benefits from this treatment. I never noticed a difference with this but I'm always taking lots of things so I couldn't tell unless it made a big impact.

I continued the enzymes until the end of February 2009 and then took a break.

    16. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)

I read about hydrogen peroxide in the Lyme forums and in Bryan Rosner's book. I also found a great source about H2O2 in this One Minute Cure book. I'm taking a 3 percent food grade preparation orally (diluted in water) on an empty stomach, and also massaging it in externally at times when I'm changing my clothes. During January 2009 I did the internal and external use about two times a day (and at about the same times).

It seems to give me a physical boost and my workouts are improving.

    17. Chelation for Heavy Metals (Particularly Mercury)

Starting 2/9/2009 I'm taking DMSA at 50 mg every four hours and LA (Alpha Lipoic Acid) at 100 mg every four hours. See below how I altered my practical intake.

I researched this regimen from Andrew Cutler's book Amalgam Illness. You can find the book on Amazon and it's a very technical book but packed with information. He knows his chemistry.

I've shown high for mercury and other heavy metals on two different tests. Bryan Rosner explains that people with Lyme actually seem to hold on to mercury. The spirochetes use it and your detox pathways aren't working as well, so it accumulates to toxic levels rather than being processed. Many of the symptoms of mercury poisoning overlap with Lyme symptoms.

I feel this is a next treatment step and I will record my progress here.

Note - How I ended up taking the DMSA and the LA is this. I take one 250 mg. capsule of DMSA and 2 of 200 mg. LA and put them into a couple of cups of water. I add some rose hip powder and some mint drops to cover the sulfur smell and taste.

    This is my DAILY Supply.

I shake and then drink one fifth of the bottle (roughly) at 7 in the morning, then 11 in the morning, then 3 pm, then 7 pm, and then the last dose at 10 pm. This gives me five daily doses each of 50 mg. of DMSA and 40 mg. of LA. Cutler recommends taking it in the night also but I'm just not going to worry about that. I take the chelation doses Monday through Thursday (4 days) and then take 3 days off each week.

    18. Concentrace Trace Mineral Drops (Alkalizing Minerals)

Many, if not all, diseases and their symptoms are associated with an acidic body pH. In Lyme disease, acidic pH can be the cause of numerous symptoms. One product that has helped many Lyme Disease sufferers (according to Rosner and his book) is ConcenTrace Trace Mineral Drops.

Mineral supplementation is affordable, non-toxic, and offers excellent detoxification properties. I get mine from the local health food store but you can also get it online at TraceMinerals.com.

    19. Chewing Food Very Thoroughly for Better Digestion and Assimilation

Chewing the food well helps especially with the Candida overgrowth that tends to accompany Lyme Disease. I've read about the chewing well in Gabriel Cousens book Conscious Eating and also in Mark Joyner's Simpleology course.

I try to chew most food 30 times (when I'm focusing) and hard food like carrots up to 50 times, or until it's liquid and flows down my throat without having to swallow consciously.

    20. Magnesium (internally and externally)

People with Lyme are almost always low on magnesium, according to Bryan Rosner's book on Lyme Treatment. I've been taking magnesium taurate and magnesium citrate internally.

I've also been using magnesium oil (super saturated magnesium chloride) externally. I massage it into my skin the mornings along with the castor oil and also some hydrogen peroxide. You can learn more about external magnesium application and get some products at Global Light.

    21. Mini Tramp (Jumping for lymph stimulation and flow)

Several times per day I jump on the mini-trampoline for a few minutes. This exercise is particularly good for stimulating the lymph flow. Not all mini-tramps are created equal!

We have a Cellerciser and the quality is superb. You can get more info about the Cellerciser Trampolines Here.

    Plans

I'm studying the Marshall Protocol, and the salt/vitamin C protocol. Also, I'm looking into building a "Doug Machine" or coil machine and have gone over the schematics. I've also heard about borax being able to kill spirochetes.

List milk thistle, also taurine, and olive leaf extract.

    ____________

The CD57 cells are a subset of cells in the immune system. Lyme disease really attacks these cells and a measurement of these cells can be used to verify Lyme, and to monitor recovery. A normal score is 200, someone who has Lyme would be below 60, and less than 20 represents severe illness.

    My CD57 on November 19 was 15.6

In immunology, the CD57 antigen (CD stands for cluster of differentiation) is a protein which is also called HNK1 (human natural killer-1) or LEU7.

    Flipper,

I became very I'll earlier this year. I had no idea what was wrong with me but I got to the point where I could not look after myself or my children.

My minor symptoms were severe hot flashes and night sweats as well as brain fog. I saw a new doctor in order to get bio identical hormones. He ran a Western Blot test and I was positive for Lyme. It turns out he is an LLMD. He gave me the option of ABX or the Cowden Protocol. I chose the Cowden and did it for a month when I had a severe allergic reaction to one of the tinctures. I was so sick and desperate that I finally took a friend's advice and looked into Advanced Cell Training that you mentioned.

I was very skeptical, but willing to try it. My symptoms dropped in severity after the first week. I am now back to my old self and my symptoms are now at zero. I worked with Gary Blier for four months and steadily improved each week. He allows everyone to participate for four weeks and if they are not happy with their results they are refunded 100% of the money they spent.

I knew many people that contracted Lyme, but until I got it myself, I never realized how debilitating and diabolical this illness is. I would encourage anyone that is struggling with Lyme to try ACT. There is a Facebook page that has many testimonials from many that have completely recovered from this disease. It has literally saved my life.

Shannon, that's great that you were able to immediately have an LLMD! My hubby is now being treated by a naturopathic physician who is three hours away, but well worth the drive! This is the only doctor who checked the CD57 mentioned at the end of China Connection's article. His number was 33. Hubby is on a number of supplements and several different antibiotics/antiparastics. He has improved with this regimen, but still has some really bad days/times. We will have to look into ACT as well.

    skin brushing

Below is a top article on skin brushing that will further help you to clean out your lymphatic system. It recommends not brushing over open infections however. So provided your skin is still in reasonable condition then this can help a lot. Personally I would rub in castor oil before going to bed (castor oil stains material so use old bed sheets etc.) and wash off the next morning and then brush. There is also a much harsher system of this called scraping; in China it is called “Gua Sha”. I will post an article on it soon. I would recommend it but not if you are in a weakened condition.

    http://www.jashbotanicals.com/articl..._brushing.html

A Simplistic Approach to Healthier Skin

The practice of dry skin brushing may be old news to those who practice the daily routine, but with all the skin care products and hypes out there, we thought it important to re-introduce a process that is not only a great way to maintain healthy skin, but also helps you to maintain a healthy body. The ability of the skin to excrete toxins is of paramount importance to you.

Dry skin brushing is one of the healthier self-help methods available to us today. Stimulation of the skin sets in motion natural healing pathways within your body. Additionally, it encourages nerve beds within its structure that in turn increases normal healing processes throughout the body.

There are several automatic systems contained by the body including healing processes. Your heart beats by design—you breathe automatically—and your body’s “automatic healing process”, is another. It is set in motion when your body generates an itching response to the required areas. You will obviously scratch that area, and in turn, the area turns red with a fresh blood supply and the natural healing process has now been set in motion. This is the same healing process that will follow a skin brushing session.

Your skin is the primary sign of an internally toxic body. As soon as your internal body becomes toxic, it will spread out into your skin causing your skin to become irritated and itchy. There are numerous ports of elimination of the skin including your mouth, face, and arm pits, the inside of your upper thigh region, feet, and toe nails. Did you know that body odor is also an additional indicator of toxic build-up and is eradicated through the same channels. Let’s not forget your tongue, which builds up a plaque and is yet another gauge of toxins in the body.

Our skin is permeable or porous, and can absorb toxins directly from the environment. According to Jacqueline Krohn, MD, “Caustic chemicals, such as alkaline solutions, can also penetrate the skin. Once a chemical has penetrated the stratum corneum (the most superficial layer of the skin), it moves through the epidermis and into the dermis. Skin brushing will enhance your health significantly. You may wonder how this is accomplished using, “skin brushing”. It is a fact that the skin is one of the optimal ways to getting to the endocrine system and all the glands it reaches very quickly. In addition, at the same time, it triggers them to react successfully. The instantaneous result from a brushing session is a feeling of increased physical well being.

The Benefits Of Dry Skin Brushing

    • Dry skin brushing helps to shed dead skin cells, which can help improve skin texture and cell renewal.

    • Dry skin brushing increases circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas.

    • Dry skin brushing also helps to tighten the skin because it increases the flow of blood. Increasing the circulation to the skin can also help lessen the appearance of cellulite.

    • Dry skin brushing stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified. After several days of dry brushing, you may notice the gelatinous mucoid material in your stools.

    • Dry skin brushing helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits.

    • Dry skin brushing also rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin.

    • Dry skin brushing helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health.

    • Individuals who sit at a computer screen all day long will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing. People who have inactive lifestyles or jobs usually experience stiff and sore necks and shoulders that reach even into their arms and down their spines and into their lower backs. Increased blood flow begins entering the areas brushed and you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated.

    • LADIES—Cellulite is toxic. Cellulite is toxic materials that are accumulated in your body’s fat cells as they are unable to be eliminated. So, rather than liposuction surgery, how about utilizing the “dry skin brushing” techniques coupled with an alkaline diet program and a great exercising routine. It will break down the unwelcome toxic body deposits and send them scurrying out of your body through the elimination channels we discussed above.

How to Get Started With Your Skin Brushing Regimen
1.Purchase a natural, NOT a synthetic, bristle brush. (vegetable bristle)2. Purchase a brush with a long handle, so that you are able to reach all areas of your body. Best-case scenario would be one that had a removable head with a strap for your hand.

    3. Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. If you are feeling ill, please do it twice a day until you feel better.

    4. Skin brushing should be performed prior to your bath or shower and your body dry and naked.

    5. Begin brushing your skin in long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction. Always brush towards the heart. Try and brush several times in each area, over-lapping as you go.

    6. Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken.
    skin brush

    7. After brushing your skin, rinse off in the shower. Paavo Airola, author of Swedish Beauty Secrets, recommends alternating temperatures in the shower from hot to cold. This will further invigorate the skin and stimulate blood circulation, bring more blood to the outer layers of the skin.

    8. After getting out of the shower, dry off vigorously and massage your skin with pure plant oil, such as almond, jojoba, sesame or coconut. We like to use a small amount of Euro Organic Oil which is a blend of sunflower, almond, apricot, avocado, and jojoba oils.

    9. Don’t forget to clean your skin brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, dry your skin brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.

    10. For a thorough lymphatic cleansing, perform skin brushing daily for a minimum of three months.

Caution: Do not brush on or over skin rashes, wounds, cuts, infections, poison oak or poison ivy.

Note: Any well designed program will take about 30 days to see and experience the changes. Please be patient and keep up the program!

CC, hubby's doctor recommended an older book, "Natural Healing: the Total Health and Nutritional Program" by Jack Soltanoff, D.C. It includes a chapter on skin brushing as well. I've heard that other Lyme patients do it and hubby needs to start.

Hubby also needs to eat better, which we've been working on. I never knew he was so dependent on breads until I started trying to get him to eat better. Doc says little to no gluten, sugar, dairy products and nightshade veggies. Doesn't leave much that we eat, but we'll have to learn to eat differently.

If anyone reads this thread and doesn't have Lyme already, please, please protect yourself from it. It is a nightmare!

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman is lucky to be alive after catching a mysterious illness from a tick bite.

Anna Felix, 81, of Kingwood Township, said she feared her lymphoma had returned or she might have dementia when she started getting weak and confused and lost 30 pounds.

“I remember I couldn’t eat too well. And I started needing help to walk,” Felix told CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez on Friday.

Initial tests were inconclusive, and although she showed symptoms of Lyme disease, Felix tested negative. Lab technicians at Hunterdon Medical Center made a breakthrough discovery when they examined her spinal fluid and found an unusual strain of bacteria they had never seen before.

“It was really spectacular. We knew we were on to something really big and that she would be treated and cured,” lab tech Amy Kurynow said.

Doctor Joseph Gugliotta confirmed it was the bacteria borrelia miyamotoi,
    a new disease
transmitted by the same deer tick that causes Lyme disease. Felix is the first American case of this new tick-transmitted disease.

“Once I verified the organisms were there in the second spinal tap she was treated with a high dose of antibiotics and by five to seven days we were seeing improvement already,” Dr. Gugliotta said.

Felix said she likely was bitten by a tick on her farm. She’s since made a full recovery, and said she’s grateful for the lab’s life-saving discovery.

“It is amazing, and I hope that through this other people will get help, too,” Felix said.

Because of the newly discovered bacteria, Dr. Gugliotta said he is reviewing old cases and has discovered the strain in other patients who were undiagnosed.

Bacteria mutate for lunch breakfast and dinner the entire idea of speciation in bacteria is well specious. IMHO as a trained paleontologist which I am tis is just another version of Lyme.

The meds are so embarrassed/stupid they must create another new disease to cover their tracks like here in south they when pressed say its southern starie disease not lyme or some such nonsense.

In other words all you peons we could not diagnose and who got screwed on insurance and workers comp well lump it we will never admit we were wrong.

It would be interesting to see results of a spinal tap in about 60 days. Will the treatment they are using be able to cross the barrier and clear the spinal fluid?

Sebastian... I'm batting zero trying to find out... is this "new" bacteria also a spirochete?

Summerthyme, yes this latest bacteria is also a spirochete, read a Russian study regarding this from 2011.

Thanks, Ellie... but? This is a NEW (just finally figured out very recently) bug.... Are you sure you're thinking of the same one?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you - had to do some chores - but seems this 'strain' was first detected in Japan in 1995. As I have mentioned before, I am a diagnosed case of chronic lymes, dealt with Mayo in Rochester, CDC, NIH, etc. The following is a PDF that discusses the Borrelia miyamotio, groups it with spirocetes.

Ellie, I'd love to hear more about your story. How long have you had it, how are you doing now, etc. In fact, I'd love to see updates from everyone here that has Lyme or has a loved one with it.

Hubby is doing slightly better on the supplements and meds he is taking. Some days are still awful, but more are not. Lyme is such a crazy rollercoaster ride!!!! Just when we think he's finally on the road to health he gets really bad again.

Summerthyme, this and Lyme are all members of the Borrelia genus. Borrelia miyamotoi is a spirochet and I expect all Borrellia are. "They" call Lyme in the south Borrelia lonestari its still Lyme.

To my mind its hard to even use the concept of a species for a bacteria given the mutation rates.

This sudden explosion of Borrellia species lets a lot of absolute incompetents off the hook - in their own minds - and insurance and workmens comp too.

"You don't have Lyme disease you have lonstaari or miyamotoi. See we were not a bunch of criminally neglegent subhuman incompetent lizards pretending to be human you really did not have Lyme you had lonestari."

Its all Lyme disease, some minor difference in the DNA code among who knows how many sequences does not change that.
