The city administrator, the MSM and USGS may have been way too quick to declare this whole event as a non-starter and an isolated harmless event.
I am still amazed (actually I am not) at how the scientific community just wants this to all go away.

Booms, ground shaking returns to Clintonville Friday
Saturday, March 24, 2012 8:50 a.m. CDT
CLINTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - Clintonville residents say the booming and shaking returned Friday night.
Police say there were 10 reports of booming and shaking from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday. Authorities also say they got two reports after midnight.
On Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a 1.5 magnitude earthquake hit the city in Waupaca County around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday. Geological experts say loud booming noises can accompany earthquakes.
This all began last Sunday night, when residents first reported what were, at the time, mysterious booms and ground shaking.
Officials with the city continue to say that residents are not in any danger.

That is your Condition Orange Indicator.Officials with the city continue to say that residents are not in any danger.
It means they know something is going on but they have no clue.
Thus it is the only thing they can say at this moment, especially with -no- proactive efforts being made by the authorities.
The role of government is to pick up the bodies and to protect itself, not you.

There is a lot we don't know and may never know about the NMSZ quakes of 1811/1812, there are lots of diaries floating around out there still with stories of the events. One this is certain is that NMSZ sits atop a rift volcano, how much that played into things we won't know until well have another 8.5+ quake in that same area. My dads family lived south of DuQuoin, Il, and then over towards Cahokia and down into the bootheel area of Missouri at the time and stories handed down through the generations was of a very terrifying time for that part of the country.
Sounds like a microcosm of Amerika.
They are sitting on a volcano that is giving warnings of erupting and they say all is well.
I think we will see volcanoes open up in places that have long been quiet. The quiet days are over.
It's going to be on ABC Nightly News here in a minute, maybe they will have the story on their website???
According to this, there was a volcano in Marathon County:
http://addins.waow.com/blogs/weather...o-in-wisconsin
but that's about 55 miles northwest of Clintonville.
They were also saying that the granite bedrock of Clintoville transmitted the vibrations very well. Isn't the very fact that there's granite evidence that there was volcanic activity at some point in the past?
Here is a map of the bedrock of Wisconsin:![]()

And everyone is absolutely certain this is not the military playing war games and testing artillery?
I was reading somewhere else that something like this had happened before and the military totally denied they had anything to do with it.
Then months down the road it came out they had everything to do with it and finally they told the truth.

Explosives don't have the same acoustic signature, and they don't have a ELF-LF signature like these events do. They also won't sound about the same volume 30 miles away, like these do. And sound like they have no direction when you walk outside your house. Artillery and other point source sound sources have a detectable direction.

That might be referring to injection disposal of liquid chemical warfare wastes into a borehole. Microquakes started, so they stopped. After a quiet period they started injection again and the Microquakes started again. This went on for a while with them saying it wasn't them until they decided it was.
Do volcano's and earthquakes and such only happen at night?
I'd be moving my ass out of there no matter.

They are measuring the frequency of occurrences by the number of calls that are received at the police station. Many people probably work outside of town and aren't home except at night, so more calls. It will be interesting to see if there are more daytime calls on the weekend.
We had some of these kinds of sounds around here last year (SW NH). I always chalked it up to people shooting and blowing things up - something that happens quite frequently around here. But some of the sounds were like thunder on a completely cloudy day. Then we had a 2.6 EQ about 20 miles away and the sounds stopped. My dog freaked when the EQ hit but gave no warning beforehand. We will have to work on that.
I'd be hauling ass out of there too. It's just too weird.
If a tree falls in the forest and there are no humans around to hear, or see, the tree fall, did it still fall? Fewer people around during the daytime means fewer witnesses to the booms. Also sound sounds differently during the day time, things like machinery, traffic, etc., affect how we percieve sound during the day versus during the night. Loup explained the sound thing earlier in the thread.

I posted this about the New Madrid way back in 2005.
Most of the links don't work anymore the way they are (in the original thread), but I'll post some of them to the main sites individually below (the one below work). Lots of good info, used to be some really good maps, some of the sites "consolidated" so not sure how many are still available. I know some of the stuff has disappeared completely, some has been combined with other stuff.
There are a lot of good links hidden in a couple of them, just time-consuming for those who might not want to dig around looking for things.

I understand about the sound-round here it is interesting. We are not too far from an interstate. During the day you hardly notice it but at night it sounds right next door when you are outside.
But even at that it is still noticeable.
just seems these sound there run from like 9PM to 3AM give or take....even during the day *someone* has to notice them and wonder.

they may well notice it but don't say anything about it out of fear of being labled a nutcase. Another thought for those that are around during the day in most small towns tend to be mothers with kids, tv and video games blaring, and the elderly who may not hear the sounds very well.
Or in the daytime it might be mistaken for some kind of industrial noise---bulldozers, trash trucks emptying dumpsters, a car on the road---any number of things. So people DO "hear" the sounds, but their minds just dismiss it as 'normal' business-day 'noise' like one of those. At night, however, when folks KNOW there aren't supposed to be things like heavy machinery running and the like, they hear the noise and actually NOTICE it, because they know it is out of place.

Update on Clintonville 'booms'
Police: 3 reports Saturday night/Sunday morning
Updated: Sunday, 25 Mar 2012, 10:05 AM CDT
Published : Sunday, 25 Mar 2012, 10:00 AM CDT
CLINTONVILLE - We continue to keep an eye on the situation in Clintonville.
In speaking with police around 4 a.m. Sunday, we learned residents had called in a total of three reports of 'booming and shaking' Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
Two calls came into the dispatch center before 9 p.m. Saturday and one call came in just after midnight Sunday morning.
Residents reported hearing booming noises and some reported feeling their homes shake.
Geological experts say loud noises and shaking are common after earthquakes.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirms a magnitude 1.5 earthquake struck Clintonville on Tuesday.
City officials say there is no immediate danger to the public.
Apparently Montello WI is having the same sounds now?
I just heard the end of a news clip so didn't get the whole story...
Yep, RB posted it back around the 22nd? Post #208

I highly doubt that the earthquake on Tues is still calling this to be associated with just that quake.

Since when has it been common? Especially after a M1.5? C'mon, you geologic "experts" are late to the party and you know it. Another example of the herd instinct common in the scientific community now.Geological experts say loud noises and shaking are common after earthquakes.
Based on what?City officials say there is no immediate danger to the public.

I've lived in So Cal my entire life. Have felt many earthquakes much, much larger than 1.5. In fact, I've never to my knowledge felt a 1.5, too small. After much larger quakes, shaking and loud noises are NOT common unless we're having a fairly good sized aftershock.

You can never compare how EQs sound/feel in CA to how EQs sound/feel East of the Rockies or in the Midwest.
See post #7 in the thread below for a comparison map of EQs.

I think I hear a mountain lion, I better go
"How big a boy are ye?"
So say we all. . . .
These don't sound like edge of plate earthquakes. These recent roaring/groaning sounds seem to be more likely plate over plate sliding.
Heads up Wisconsin. Samsmom says Virginina just had a 3.1 at .5 mile depth. Time to listen up a see if the sounds start in your area.
