Clintonville to Hold Public Meeting on Booming and Tremors: Updated
Clintonville - For a second night in a row, residents on the east side of Clintonville dealt with booming and quaking that can't be explained.
The city is now calling the noises and tremors a natural phenomenon that so far can't be explained.
"Last night it would take a break for two hours then you'd hear one big boom. I would shake on my couch and everything," Joseph Clauson of Clintonville said.
The last report of noises or shaking was just after 9 A.M. as city officials started Day 2 of their investigation. At this point, that investigation has been more of a process of elimination.
The city is holding a public meeting on Wednesday at 6 P.M. at Clintonville High School to share what it's learned and let residents ask questions.
Tuesday, utility workers went to wells to make sure water mains were working properly. They say everything checked out fine, so city officials ruled out the water mains as a possible cause.
"I've done this for 35 years now and never heard of anything tied to the water system that has shown itself like this has. It's pretty unlikely, but you have to look at everything," CTW Corp. employee Tim Cummens said.
WE Energies checked gas lines again Tuesday, and everything checked out fine.
From a geological standpoint, earthquakes as well as frost quakes are not the explanation, either.
City officials are frustrated and disappointed by the lack of answers.
"People are really stumped. It's strange. It's not truly an earthquake, yet there are clearly rumblings under the ground that people feel and hear," City Administrator Lisa Kuss said.
The city plans to set up audio equipment at its utilities building so it has a record of the noises people are hearing.
"I think that we will continue to look at things and to assure people that we are not forgetting or ignoring the situation and we'll have to see if it continues each day and night," Kuss said.
