    Chapter 49

OK I thought I would give you all a Saturday treat. This chapter is not complete but I am pretty sure I was going to have to break kit up to post. The second part should be on in a few days or so.

    Chapter 49

JT and agent Smith arrived at the small flying cloud airport about 20 minutes from the center of Bloomfield Minnesota. The flight had went off without much of a problem except for a little turbulence. Jim Davis was a masterful pilot and landed the plan softly down to earth and then taxied over to an area off to the right of the main runway and taxied the plan to a stop. He walked back and opened the door as an airport attendant grabbed a rolling stairway and pushed it in place for the planes occupants to disembark. JT and Tim stood up and walked towards the door and made their way down the steps. They looked around and smelled the fresh air and both to a minute to stretch from long time sitting. JT looked over towards one of the closer hangers and noticed a dark suburban. He wished he had made some signal for them to be able to know who was friendly. Yes he had seen pictures of her but he was not sure if she knew what he looked like. His picture had be splashed about but these things would have been great to think of before now.

He need not have worried her dad had found out who was flying them up and she was waiting in the suburban. She saw the two men walk down the steps and stretch. It was funny somewhat but Agent Smith she assumed had a fair resemblance to JT albeit a younger version. She smiled and opened the passenger door of the SUV and stepped out walking quickly over to JT and giving him a huge hug.

JT saw the dark haired woman step out of the SUV and walked towards him. She was just as her picture portrayed her to be. She was beautiful. She walked quickly over and then opened her arms wide and hugged him. His arms surrounded her body and held her tight. The two melded together as if they were lovers who had been apart for to long. As it were there were part of a group and in that small minority that had each other. Agent Smith stood behind JT and Gael and Trevor walked up behind Jeanie. As JT and Jeanie ended their embrace the others began making introductions and shaking hands. JT reached out and shook Trevor’s hand and then Gael each introducing themselves in turn. Everyone began talking at once saying it was nice to finally meet each other and then laughing.

Trevor looked around and walked over to the pilot and had a few words and the two laughed like old friends. He walked back over to the group and said that it looked like Jim was going to play some cards with the tower manager and he would be able to leave whenever we are done tonight.

JT looked over and noticed a black label bottle of Jack Danials that did not seem to be there when they had walked past him before.

“yeah but will he be able to fly when we are done.” JT asked smiling and looking at Trevor.

“oh yeah that is mostly for the people to stay her awhile... play some poker and smoke some stogies and not notice it is past time for this airport to close.” He said smiling back.

Everyone broke out in a laugh as Trevor directed the group to head back to the SUV. They all clamored into the vehicle somehow Tim and JT were in the back with Jeanie and Gael and Trevor were in the front seats. They pulled out onto the main road and headed back to state road 169 and then got on interstate 90 heading back to Trevors and Jeanie home near Bloomfield. JT sat in the back seat quietly while Tim and Jeanie spoke off and on. Occasional Gael would add something to the conversation and then it would go back and forth. Trevor was very quiet which concerned JT. He hoped that he had not overstepped when he had asked to come up and join this group but he sensed it was something else. JT noticed Trevor had checked the rear-view mirror several times now. He considered turning and looking over his shoulder but if they were being followed he would not know it. Maybe Trevor had caught site of something as they drove here and now it was back again. JT had not considered this issue either. What if they were stopped for some reason. Tim was FBI but way out of his jurisdiction and frankly from what he had learned about this group inside the FBI getting pulled over and arrested might just be the least of their worries.

“Trevor...do … do we have company.” JT asked quietly without making any odd movements.

The conversations ended and everyone sat quietly waiting for the answer.

“yeah I think so. The same dark sedan was back there when we drove up this way. It looked like they got use not to long after we left the house.” Trevor answered and then added. “ I have already let the local Sheriff know whats up so this is not them. They only people I can conceive of being back there is the people from the Mosque or the FBI group.”

“how many do you think can be in that car.” JT asked.

“not sure... 4 or 5 at the most.”He answered.

“well they already know where you live. I doubt they will try and pull us over maybe shoot us but pulling us over would be somewhat foolish at this point. Screw them drive home.” JT said defiantly.

Trevor looked in the mirror at JT and smiled. He was right if they want a fight then we can at least do it on our turf unless they try something before hand.

JT pulled the security six from the holster and opened the cylinder and raised the barrel pointed towards the window up and allowed the 6 cartridges to slip out and into his hand. He grabbed one of the speed-loaders and placed the tips of the golden sabers into the cylinder and gave the release knob a twist. The ammunition slipped down into the cylinder. He spun the cylinder for no reason other then it was a ritual he had done for some time and then closed the cylinder back. Trevor asked what he had replaced. JT explained he had some target ammo in there during the flight but this was golden saber 357 now and if there was going to be a fire fight he was going in with that. Everyone seemed to have the same thought and checked their weapons. Tim racked the slide and made sure he had a live round now if needed. They drove on.

Leslie had stayed at Trevor’s house to make some food for everyone when they got back picking up JT and Tim from the airport before the trip they had planned to the mosque. She was busy making cutting vegetables and sandwich additions one of the front motion sensor alarms startled her out of the current normalcy. She looked at the flashing light on the small monitor and could tell someone or something had made it into the main courtyard from near the gate. She reached back for the compact 45 she kept tucked in the middle of her back. She unsnapped the holster and pulled the gun up. She knew well there was a round already in the chamber. She ran to the back room and reached into the closet and grabbed the AR she and Trevor had taken shooting the day before. She grabbed a 30 round magazine and slammed it into place. She walked with both guns in hand and laid the AR across the chair next to the dining room. She would like to have had the 22 from the truck but she was not sure how close whoever or whatever it was that was in the yard would be to the house. If they had just gotten over the fence it should take them a few a minute or so to get to the house she thought to herself. The AR could reach out and touch someone but it could not replace the silencer and the 22. She had made the decision to move out the door with the 45 and get the gun on the the front seat of the truck and duck back in the house. She felt it was worth the chance. If this was a fight with more then one person stealth would be a major advantage. She grabbed the door handle and turned quickly pulling the door open and just beginning to take a step out. To her astonishment there was a man there dress in all black who was knelling in front of the door with what looked like lock-picks. She squelched a scream as he made a quick sound dropping the small metal devices and came up with a can depressing the button as he came up spraying the noxious gas towards he face. She quickly slammed the door but not before some of the pepper spray hit her face on the left side near her eye. She came up with the 45 in her right hand and fired 2 shots through the door as she tuned the dead bolt and ran for the kitchen. Leslie opened the refrigerator carefully and grabbed the milk out and placed it on the counter. She opened the bottle and poured some one the dishtowel and dabbed the skin away from her eye. She was trying not to spread the irritant anymore the humanly possible. She knew it was going to burn but if it got into her eye it could blind her for several minutes and that could prove deadly. She held the towel on her cheek and reached for her cell to call Trevor. There had to be more of them she thought and Trevor had to know before he arrived and was ambushed.

They 5 drove on and kept on eye on the black sedan following them. It had made no move to stop them or in anyway interfere with their travel. They were only minutes from Trevor's house and if they had planned something it would have to be soon. The ringing of the phone broke Trevor's concentration on the sedan and he pushed a button on the steering wheel and answered the call. On the other end a somewhat out of breath Leslie explained what had happened and warned them to not come home. Of course that fell on deaf ears as they were not going to leave her to deal with whatever was at the house herself. “we will be there in less then 5 minutes, we will be coming in the back entrance. Get the AR and keep them off you for as long as you can we will let you know when we are in the courtyard.” Trevor said as he sped up. The sedan was caught off guard as the SUV started speeding away and then passing between cars quickly.

“There is a back entrance about 20 yards from the front gate. I doubt they know it is there. It has a pretty good brush cover and then a hand scanner. It comes out near Jeanie's cabin. Geal and I are going to go through the gate and get to the cabin and arm up and head for my house. You three take out the ones in the car and then Jeanie can lead you up to the house hugging the outter wall. That way you can pick off people from the brush cover or pick off people in the brush cover. There are a couple of 22 in the back for you and Tim. Also if you push the button between your legs when you get out there are two pistol grip 12 gauge with 00 buckshot and a box extra. You will not have much time when we stop until the sedan is here.” Trevor said speaking to no one in particular. “ I hoped we would have some time to get to know each other before this but well shit happens.”

“yes it does and it seems to be happening around me a lot recently. Go for your house we will back you up and take care of the ones in the car. Long live the blood of the patriots. I am proud to be here with you guys no matter how this comes out.” JT said looking up into the mirror and the dark eyes of Jeanie’s dad. The SUV made the last turn down the private road and then sped past the front gate. The car blocking the gate with men taking firing positions behind it were surprised when the SUV sped past and made no effort to ram them. The did not get off a shot as the SUV sped away the taillights glowing as it slowed down the road. The SUV came to a sudden stop as Tim and JT climbed out the back doors with guns at the ready. They could not see the sedan that had been following them but both saw the car blocking the gate and the men behind it. JT had counted 5 men behind the car with guns just waiting for them. Jeanie had grabbed a steel case and pushed it out the side door letting it fall to the ground at JT feet before she climbed out and took the 45 out of her side holster. She reached back and smacked the button just below the seat pillow and the seat flipped up and showed the two shotguns and ammo. JT marveled at the extra guns and wondered if this all went well if he could ask Trevor who did the extra work on his truck. Trevor and Gael had made for the gate and had already worked the hand scanner and were running towards Jeanie’s house. They both had their 45 but in the basement safe Trevor had a pair of AR and 5 30 round mags for each already loaded up. Trevor could hear Jeanie’s dog so they had not made it far enough to shot him yet and that gave him hope that no one was back this far into the property. They made it to the door and that was about the time Trevor remembered he did not have a key and with that frustration and anger he gave the door a mighty kick and it smashed inward. The dog came to see what the commotion was Trevor immediately told him to go rest. He hoped that meant that the dog would head to the bedroom and stay there. All he needed was Jeanie's dog getting shot and then truly all hell would break loose he thought. The two ran down the steps to the basement and Trevor opened the gun-safe on the first try. It helped that he had done this sort of thing under stressful situations but that was along time ago and he was a much younger man. He tossed an AR to Gael and a satchel of magazine and then took the other one for him self. He grabbed the small canvas pouch and took the strap over his head and then ran for the stairs to go up them. As he topped the steps he could hear people in the front room and motioned for Gael to hold his assent. He peeked around the corner and could see one of the men walking towards the hallway and the back bedroom. He cursed under his breath. The sounds coming from around the corner gave him some idea someone was also in the main room on the other side of the wall they faced on the stairs. Trevor knew he had to do something. The man walking back towards the bedroom was almost there and would probably shoot the dog if for no other reason then he was big. He took 2 quiet steps forward and motioned for Gael to go left and check out that room. Just as Trevor was raising his gun and getting an aim on the mans torso a small creaking sound came from the board below his feet. The man began to turn in Trevor’s direction Sam came lumbering out of the back room and clamped onto the side of the mans thigh. The attacker was caught off guard and screamed as his gun shot up into the ceiling. Trevor promptly put two rounds through the left rib cage and the man slumped to the floor with the dog shaking his entire body. It somehow amused Trevor that the dog sniffed the now limp doll and walked back into the bedroom with a somewhat disgusted walk. Gael had taken a couple of steps to the left and could see the man at the other end of the front room. He raised the AR and placed two shots to the mans chest and then turned towards the door. Gael caught movement from outside quick enough to see someone aiming something large. His quick reaction to hit the floor was all that saved him from getting shot. Trevor had melded against the far wall and was pretty sure he was out of sight of the shooter outside. He doubted if they knew how many were in the cabin. A new burst of automatic fire came and shattered the windows and framing. Trevor held the rifle steady and waited. Whoever was shooting was walking back and forth pouring lead into the window all he had to do was walk a little to far to the left and he would be in Trevor's sights. He could see the dark figure as it moved closer and fired again adding more holes to the back wall but hitting very little. Gael was on the floor. Trevor took a moment to glance down and saw Gael laying still as could be as if he were lounging in a field of grass with not a care in the world the only thing that made that scene out of place would be the black AR across his chest. Trevor moved his eye back to the small diopter sites he had on the AR he had grabbed and waited. His finger increasing the pressure little by little until it was at that point it would break and fire.

The dark clad man moved across the front of the house trying to get a better vantage of the person he saw drop to the ground without opening himself up to a return shot. He had stepped closers and moved to the right hand side of the building and could just make out the legs. One...Two More steps and he would be able.

Trevor watched and waited. He had been here before waiting for the target to show itself but he never thought he would be doing it in his own back yard. He would have to make some calls after this. There would be people who knew the person that sent these people to his house and they would have to be dealt with harshly. The mans head came in view and Trevor squeezed the trigger ever so slightly and it broke and the bullet was away. It traversed the short distance before the man could react to the sound. The bullet caught him just above the ear and traveled through his brain and out the other side. He collapsed to the ground with a thud. Gael looked up for the first time and checked for other shooters and could not see any. Trevor ventured a tentative step out and looked around and checked the bushes about 10 yards out and nothing appeared to be moving. Gael rolled over and was up on his knees and then feet and then out the front door to the right to gather some cover from the corner of the house. He made a low whistle and Trevor followed and stood back against the cabin as Gael scoured the landscape in front of them.

Trevor whispered “to the right and up the back trail that is the one they most likely missed. We can hit the house on the back side next to the bedroom. If need be we can go in the window and help Leslie.”

Gael nodded and they were off to the left and headed up a thick brush covered trail to get to the main house.

JT reached in and grabbed one of the shotguns and went around the back door and deposited it into the front passenger seat. He could see men moving up from the main gate and now the dark sedan had come into view. It stopped at the main gate and then slowly moved down the road in their direction. Tim had grabbed the other shotgun and then moved behind the car door and Jeanie had grabbed the metal gun case and opened it on the ground as JT turned to look at what other armaments Trevor had left them. He looked down into the case and had to remember to close his mouth. Two skelatonized 22 with what looked like integral suppressors lay in the case with 3 full boxes of ammunition.

“These were presents for you and Agent Smith. I guess you get them early.” Jeanie said as JT reached down and Jeanie handed him one and he handed it over to Tim and then took the other for himself.

“Nice and I did not even get you flowers.” he said as he looked it over. The black mat finish showing no reflection. He reached under and found the release much like a ruger 10/22 and dropped the magazine. After looking to check for ammo he placed it back and pushed it up. JT reached over and pulled the bolt handle and then let it go. He lay the security six in the front seat as he leveled the rifle and sighted through the 9x scope and could see the men in the brush moving closer. One of the dark clad men was closer to the road and not covered by as much brush. JT sighted the gun and squeezed the trigger. The man walking quickly up the road at the edge near the bushes dropped screaming holding his bleeding knee. Another of the men ran towards him and was caught with a silent smack to the side of the head and was down to the ground and dead. JT looked back at Jeanie and smiled. “bait” was all he said. Tim stood in the door well and steadied the rifle on the top of the SUV. He had a better view of the other 3 men back in the bushes. He targeted the one closet to his group and fired a quick 3 shot burst to the chest and watched as the man grabbed his chest and went down. The other two men looked around as if some demon had swopped in and killed their friend without a sound. JT knew the 22 round was not something to be used against the moving car but he could not help but fire off 5 rounds into the front window of the advancing sedan and 3 more into the radiator.

“Tim Called Dawes ask him to call that... whoever he worked with up and find out who these people are and if they are regular FBI.” JT said as he fired the rounds into the sedan.

Tim handed the 22 to Jeanie with some bit of hesitation and reached into his pocket and pulled out his issued phone. He tapped the speed dial and waited. As he stood behind the door a shot rang out and the glass shattered just as the phone was answered.

“Tim ….shit TIM what is going on” Harold Dawes yelled into the phone.
Tim moved to the front of the SUV and checked for wounds but he was pretty sure there was nothing but some scrapes from the glass. “Hey buddy sorry was getting shot at. Can you call that FBI agent in Minnesota and see if she can tell you if they are doing a raid on that radio lady.”

“I can tell you pretty assuredly that they are not. Everyone is talking about this group inside the FBI and there are a lot of questions being asked with few answers. Hold on a second and keep yourself alive.” Harold said at a much lower tone but still showing he was not happy with the situation his friend now found himself. He looked up and dialed Tessa Mills and waited for her to answer. She answered on the fourth ring and sounded her normally cheerful self. Harold cut her off and explained what he knew of the attack on Jeanie Reynolds and asked if there was something she knew about. She sounded genuinely surprised and said that nothing was going on there that she knew of. She did say a couple of the liaisons had been gone for a few days and the other two had given some excuse to the agent in charge before disappearing much earlier. Harold thanked her and gave her Agent Smiths number and said he might be calling later it appeared he was in a fire fight over at the Reynolds house and was hoping this was not FBI regulars. She quickly asked if she should head that way and see if she could lend a hand. Harold said they could probably take care of what was at the house but he worried that maybe there was a bigger group at the mosque now. He told her to be careful but if she wanted to help she could go and check out the Morgue and see what was going on there. He did not fill her in on the whole story but let her know they might be sending men from there to back up the attack on the Reynolds compound. Tessa said she would call Agent Smith when she had some information and asked Harold to let her know if she could be of any more help. He thanked her and hung up. He switched back over to Tim and let him know that there were no FBI agents in on the raid as far as Tessa knew and she was heading over to make sure they were not backed up by any more from the mosque.

“Thanks buddy for all you have ever done for me and I mean that. I guess I have went all the way with this one. I will call back when I can.” Tim said after getting the information from Agent Dawes.

“TIM...TIM” The line was dead and Harold threw the phone down on the desk knocking pens and desk oddities onto the floor.

“Nope no one that he knows of is just out there doing their jobs.” Tim spoke up over another round of gun fire. He could tell they were using AK the sound was unmistakable. Rounds tore into the back of the SUV shattering all the windows and sending shards of glass flying. Tim looked down the SYV out the front and back shattered windows and saw two men get out of the rear of the sedan. He reached down for the XD and fired 2 shots in each of their general directions making them run for cover to the back of the vehicle.

Jeanie had seen the two men also fired the 45 striking the front windshield directly in front of the drivers seat. The car came to immediate stop as the drivers door opened and a man slipped out. His mistake was not being low enough and Jeanie caught him just below the shoulders and he dropped next to the door.

“ok that works, Kill them all.” JT said flatly. He stood behind the opened back door and turned his attention to the two men coming up in the brush cover. The were still to far to have a clear shot at the people in and around the SUV and JT was pretty sure they felt forgotten in the moment. Gun fire coming from behind the sedan and one lone gunman much further down the road putting rounds downrange with the AK. They had not been forgotten and they had not taken the bait he had hoped they would. The man was still screaming and holding his shattered knee. JT turned the rifle and fired a five shot volley in the brush cover and struck one of the men in the head dropping him to the group. The other attacker finally understanding that they were being shot not by some magic force but a silenced weapon raised his AK and was about to release a barrage onto the SUV but JT was already sighted in and fired again. The first shot hitting into the mans left eye and the other two into the nasal cavity and the forehead... he was dead. JT turned smoothly and fired a single shot to the side of the head and killed the man with the mangled knee. He looked up to the sedan and saw the men at the back firing on the SUV and he could hear Tim and Jeanie returning fire but it was somehow all in some other place. The sounds somehow muffled and the adrenaline fueled rush somehow soothing and... relaxing. He grabbed both shotguns and the box of ammunition walked around the front of the SUV. He handed one off to Tim with about 10 rounds. “here if you can find cover get into the brush and if not get next to Jeanie and draw some fire. I am going to go around the right and try and get behind them.” JT had the 22 slung over his shoulder and then remembered the security six. It did not seem right to go down there without it. Somehow it seemed like he was unprotected with out it the gun being some kind of shield. He slowly walked around the open drivers door and reached over and grabbed the security six.

Jeanie looked up into his calm eyes. “are you ok, what are you doing.”

He looked into her eyes and felt a pang of guilt for his thoughts. She was strikingly beautiful. “ yep you and Tim are going to keep them pinned down I am going to go kill them.” He placed the security six in the holster and walked as if on some nature stroll over to the side of the road and into the dark thicket. Jeanie could only smile and wonder if he had lost his mind but more rounds hit near the door and she returned fire. Tim was now by her side and firing the XD and then loaded 5 rounds into the shotgun and racked the forearm and moved a round into the chamber. He fired a quick three rounds and shattered the side and back windows on the sedan. They grabbed the guns and ammunition and ran for the side of the road and brush cover. They hoped no one had seen them and would continue to fire on the damaged SUV. A new barrage of incoming fire and it was centered on the SUV. Jeanie lay prone on the cool dirt and aimed down the roads edge to the AK shooter who continued to fire on the SUV. She lined up he shot and took careful aim. She fired a quick five round bust into the inner left thigh and watched as the leg became saturated with blood.

Dillon Stood firing the AK at the SUV and tearing away at the cover for these traitors and seditionist. He was part of a special group that could go out and do what needed to be done. There were backed by the IDG and worked for the FBI Director himself. They could do what the other groups could not. They got to crack some heads when needed and make sure the people that needed to be found guilty were found guilty. His rounds continued to hit the large frame breaking windows and putting hole into the shell. He hoped he had hit the ones inside and they were wounded. They needed questions answered. He had heard the rhetoric from the right about what the IDG was but it was bluster. He liked being part of the group he could get things done and if people like reporters got in the way well then they got accidentally shot. He smiled and fired some more. The bolt locked open and the magazine was empty. He grabbed a new one from the coat pocket and slammed it into place and pulled the bolt back to load a round. He fired some more on the destroyed SUV. He had seen the women he wanted her to be alive he wanted to question her. He continued to fire but his vision was blurry and he felt like he had wet himself. He wanted to reach down and feel if he was wet but his hand would not work. His brain was now not receiving anywhere near the needed amount of oxygen to continue with the cognitive process. The five rounds had completely severed the femoral artery and he was dead as soon as it was transected it just took his body twenty or thirty seconds to realize it. He began to feel weak and fell forward his hand still clutching the AK and shooting rounds off wildly. Unfortunately three of those rounds tore into the back of one of his comrades hiding behind the sedan killing him as they cut his spinal column. The other man turned to find his college down and shot from behind. He turned and the man who had been giving cover ;Dillon was down. He jumped to his feet and turned to run.
“that time had long sense passed.” JT said looking into his eyes as he pulled the trigger and shot the man holding the shotgun not six inches from his chest. He flopped back and did not move. JT saw some movement in the front seat and walked around the front of the sedan and looked in through the broken glass. A man was trying to load a semi-auto pistol. He was bloodied and looked close to death. JT pumped the shotgun and raised it slowly and fired slamming the man back into the seat and sending him on to what ever awaited on the other side. JT walked back down to where Jeanie and Tim were now standing and they all three went into the brush and found the back gate entrance. Turned to follow the wall up the main entrance and the house.

Trevor and Gael had made it to the house and the front door was broken in. They had met two men on the trail and dispatched both with quick shots from the AR well one needed an extra head shot since Trevor slipped in some dog poo and missed wide spinning the man around and to the ground racked in pain.

    the rest of chap 49

something for a rainy Friday night. I hope you all like it.

Trevor looked around the corner of the house and could see the front door somewhat and worried that they may have taken Leslie but then the gate was closed and it seemed likely whatever was happening no one had left the compound. He looked cautiously across the open yard and worried there could be shooter in the brush cover they were not going to give themselves away with an errant shot. If they were there they wanted him out in the open and then a even a bad shot could get him. He wanted to make a dash for the door her was worried about Leslie. He had to make a quick choice and he looked back a Gael and nodded and then ran for the front door taking steps to the right and left as he moved closer. Gael moved into place and watched and waited. If someone took a shot he should see the flash and would fire back. He looked down the length of the house and Trevor was almost to the door. The flash was from the center of the a mass of bushes and smacked into the side of the house and then a second round was away. Trevor was running and was within a step of the door when the second shot clipped him in the shoulder as he spun and landed on the living room floor. Gael fired a quick 5 round burst and watched and waited for any movement from the area. The second shot looked like it might have made contact. He wanted to run inside but he had to wait.

Trevor was up to his knees and looked to his right shoulder. The round had hit his jacket and looked like it might have made it back to his shoulder and left a nasty abrasion. He got to his feet and looked down the hallway and could see Leslie fighting with an attacker. He stated down the hall with out thinking and when he passed the bath room he was kicked in the side and knocked into the wall. The attacker came forward with a gun, Trevor ducked and pushed the arm up the bullet discharging into the ceiling. A bit shaken by the near miss and now the concussion of the shot so close to his head he held on to the wrist and kept track of the gun as his head cleared. He quickly regained his balance and composure striking with his left elbow a blow to the mans throat and then another to his nose. The attacker cried out in pain but held on and continued to pull the trigger on the gun as if his life depended on it. His broken nose now leaking blood down his chin and neck. Trevor pulled the right arm of the attacker back again the door jam and smashed it again and again until the gun dropped form the hand. At that point he raised his knee and connected with the right side of the mans rib cage and then again and again. Trevors head was clear now and he was thinking like he should have from the beginning. He pulled the attacker from the door and smashed him against the outside wall keeping hold of the right wrist all the time. He could hear a loud exhalation as the mans back made contact with the wall and that is just what he wanted. Trevor pulled back his right hand and forced a massive punch into the solar plexus. The man began to cough and sputter and went to his knees. Trevor immediately got behind him and wrapped his arm around the throat and then surrounded his fist with his other arm tucking it into the elbow and pulled back. The man was to dazed to understand that once this was locked in he was a dead man unless he could break the hold. Trevor could feel the life drain from his body as it bacme limp. He held on for a few second more and then pushed the body off his legs. He grabbed his 45 from the floor where it had dropped and walked back to the bedroom. He did not run. He was in warrior mode now and no more mistakes would be made. Leslie and her attacker were rolling around on the floor. It looked like she may have take a couple of hit to the face but from the blood dripping on her shirt from the attacker it looked like she had given as good as she got. Trevor however was in no mood now to let this continue or even watch the rest of this encounter. He grabbed the attacker by the mask over his face and situated the 45 next to his ear and pulled the trigger. The body went limp immediately and he pushed it over letting it slid off Leslie. She looked up somewhat surprised having been focused on the man she had been fighting and now was dead.

“I could have taken care of him myself” she said with a confident and slightly annoyed statement.

“Yeah well my amusement with this whole thing is now at an end.” Trevor retorted as he reached down and pulled her to her feet and kissed her quickly on the lips before turning and heading back towards the front door.

Leslie noticed the torn area near his shoulder and tried to get a better peek as they walked she finally grabbed his arm and stopped him in mid stride before they made the living room. She tried to look at the furrow left by the bullet and finally had to tear the jacket until she could make out the injury and was sure it was not worse then worried it might be. They made it to the front room in time to hear more gun from an AK. Trevor assumed that Gael was shooting it out with the people across from the front door who had given him the scrape. He picked up the AR where it had been forgotten in the run to the bedroom to rescue Leslie. He had to remember never to use that word for it or he would surly never hear the end of it he thought to himself. He stood with his back to the outside wall and looked around the door jam towards the large brush area. He had always liked the tress and bushes that covered the yard of the compound but now he was thinking he wished he had clear-cut and burned them all. He smiled a small wicked smile. Leslie looked over and wondered and then asked what he was he was thinking with that smile.

“I am thinking how a concrete yard would have made this much more difficult for them.” He said with a small laugh.

She smiled and he let loose with several rounds to the brush cover before he noticed some movement back down the path. He could just make out something moving further back towards the wall about 10 yard from where he and Gael were putting rounds. The brush cover was thinner in that are ad he could just make out 3 bodies moving against the wall. Trevor whistled and then said a quick phrase followed by a quick 3 round burst. Gael heard the phrase and looked 10 yards down the wall to the right and could just catch a glimpse of what Trevor wanted him to see. A small group of 3 people were making there way towards the attackers in the bushes. Gael fired a few more rounds and could see the small group disappear.

JT Tim and Jeanie were hugging the wall as they moved closer to the main house. They had heard intermittent fire and could even make out some of the rounds bouncing off the wall they were following. Tim first spied the two men in the brush ahead and they slowed trying to cover their advance with hopes they could moved in behind and get close enough to kill what appeared to be the last two attackers. JT was in the lead as they approached and could hear short bursts of fire and then silence. He turned and looked at Jeanie who was between the two men and put a finger to his lips. She in turned did the same to Tim. They were now very close and could make out the two men easily kneeling and firing the rifles towards the house. JT held his hand back flat to the other two and walked slowly forward. As he moved forward he slipped the security six from its holster and reached back with his left hand and reached under the tail of his shirt. JT knew he had to do this quickly they were just about to fire and he wanted their rounds to cover his final steps. He did not want to give them time to turn and fire, he needed to take them as close as he could to the same time. Jeanie saw in his left hand a knife blade produced from under the shirt. She had seen the type before they were called spikes made by cold steel and were really just the barest essentials of a knife. He father carried one at times around his neck. She could not make out the blade but they were all in essence a think blade and a wrapped handle all made of the same piece of metal. The two men in unison fired as they did JT stepped up and shoved the cold steel bowie spike into the ear canal of the man on the left as he brought the security six up and shot the man on the right in the side of the head. Trevor and Gael noticed the change in the weapon that fired and held their return fire but kept the AR at the ready. A few seconds later the trio walked out of the brush JT wiping off his knife off on what looked like a mask he must have taken from the attackers. Trevor and Gael walked out of their safe spots slowly making sure that all the people who had come to kill them were dead.

“thanks for the new toy, they are fantastic.” JT said as he reached around and patted the barrel as he slipping the knife into an unseen sheath.

“we had planned on giving them to you in a little less dramatic fashion.” Trevor said smiling and hugging Leslie and opening his other arm for Jeanie.

JT relayed what they had found out from Agent Dawes that these would all most likely be liaison agents. Tessa Mills the local agent had said none of the normal agents were gone or out on any assignment like this. Trevor looked down and sighed as Jeanie went into the arms of Gael. He thought for a moment if that were true then this was all planned in the Mosque more then likely and whoever was there might have more up their sleeves.

“Tim if you please give Tessa a call and see if she has anymore information for us.” JT said as he checked the rounds in the Security Six pulling the spent shells out. “Trevor you might also want to call your buddy the sheriff and let him know what happened here. I know you live away from other people but I have to believe someone heard the commotion and even if he does not send anyone he is sure to be concerned if he does not hear from you.” JT grabbed a speed-loader and slipped a fresh six rounds of golden saber in the cylinder.

“yeah he will at that.” Trevor said as he disentangled himself from Leslie and pulled out his cell.

The two men talked on their respective cell phone for several minutes and then said came back over to the ground who had gathered on the porch outside the shattered door. Leslie had explained to Gael, JT and Jeanie how it all had gotten started and how she had shot one through the door but he must have been wounded and then two more came breaking in. That was about the time all the shooting from out front and I figured you all were heading this way she laughed. Jeanie went in and got some ice in a dish towel and wrapped it up handing it to Leslie when she was done. Leslie placed it on her swollen cheek and eye. She winced a little as the cold sat on the bruises. Tim and Trevor came over to the group and let the others know what they had found out. Tim nodded to Trevor so he explained that the sheriff had indeed had calls and had told people it was a practice session in one of the old buildings for terrorist training. That should hold them for awhile but there was some concern what to do with the bodies. That was a concern that had not escaped JT. They did have a bunch of bodies laying around dressed in black clothes and masks after a few days it was going to smell he thought to himself and smiled. Tim spoke up during the lull in the conversation and with everyone coming to the realization that they had killed a lot of people and now they had to do something with them. Tim went on to explain that Agent Dawes had asked Agent Mills to check on the Mosque and make sure no other attack was coming and if it was then let us know and maybe the sheriff so we could have some back up. She was parked outside down the street but she had a good view and could see a couple of black sedans parked on the street next to the side gate. She could not make the tags but they looked like company vehicles. Tim was not sure how the agency could be of any help or if they could trust anyone enough to call them. Agent Mills said the news about Solience had made the rounds but it was still to early to see if it did shed some light on the inner workings.

“yeah maybe we need to help this along.” JT said sounding as if he was still in the midst of coming up with a plan. “yeah yeah. Lets help this along some. Tim can I have Dan release some of that information on the memory stick to that Renolds reporter in Louisville. I will get him to scrub your friends name and give all that he found out about the liaison group to her. If it goes national it will start a massive fight in the agency and could help.”

“yeah I think it is worth it. It might make a lot of peoples life rougher. Yes do it.” Tim said thinking to himself this is what Solience wanted to happen. He wanted them to face the glaring light of day.

JT grabbed his phone and looked up the contact information for the reporter.

“you do know she may not take your call. The last time you were involved at least your name she got royally smacked.” Tim said stifling a laugh.

“not my fault” JT said just as the phone was picked up.

“what was not your fault Mr. Tanner.” She said from the other end.

“ahh sorry” JT was caught flat footed. “just finished a conversation with someone and was taking no responsibility for how it might turn out.” he said as he recovered. “listen the reason I called was I have some inside information on that whole FBI, IDG liaison group. It is big and when I saw it I thought about you. It...”

“really now you thought about me, how warm and fuzzy that makes me fell. The last time I was working a news story with your name I got the shit smacked out of me by some crazed terrorist. You do recall that?” She asked

JT had to catch himself before he said that it was not his fault. He was pretty sure that would not go over well. “yeah it did and I did send you flowers and lets face it you are not on nightly. What was your gig before me?”

“I am not saying I do not want the information but if my ass in in danger I want to know about it. Fair enough and yes I did get the flowers and the note. They were lovely.” She shot back and then ended very softly.

“ I can tell you this. It may be dangerous. So after you post it make sure of who you trust at the FBI. I will call someone and have them look after you. I will have them contact you. Also in two days there may be something that will be very important and very dangerous but it may also make you famous are you interested.” He had to hang that out there. He wanted to be able to tell Dan that if something went wrong to send everything to this lady first and then all the other networks.
“I am in for both. I guess I can always get the Pulitzer posthumously.” she said with a giggle.

JT liked her and worried about her safety but it had to be done. He would call the Sheriff and ask him to try and give her some security. “Ok expect something very soon. I have your email.”

They said their goodbys and hung of the phone. JT asked Jeanie to call Dan and send the information to the email address he gave her. JT called Paula and asked if she would relay the information. That way it was nothing that would hang on the sheriff a call from his cell phone from cell towers up this way. Of course if this went badly it was not going to matter. The ranger was correct if this went down and they were not about to cover themselves they would get dropped into dark holes never to be heard from again. JT motioned for Jeanie to let him talked with Dan before she hung up. She handed him the phone when she had finished and a final goodby. She had filled him in on the reception they had received and that the plan at this time was to still go and get whomever was at the Mosque. JT and Dan said their hellos and then JT got into why he wanted to speak with Dan. He explained what his plans were for the compound in Lexington and he was going in at sunrise. He wanted Dan to send everything they had to the email address he had just been given and then 30 minutes later to everyone else starting at noon. That was three hours before the UN meeting. That was all the time he could give the President.

“Dan one more thing. After you send out the information to everyone.” JT said weighing his words carefully.

“JT..whatever you need I....” Dan said waiting.

“burn them down. Take down the whole system. Destroy whatever presence the IDG has on the web. Whip them from its memory.” JT said in a sober tone.

    Silence

Dan knew what he wanted and knew what he had to do. “ it will be done.”

JT handed the phone back to Jeanie and she said her goodbys.

Trevor looked up from the ground. “we have more work to do. These bodies will have to keep until we find something to do with them.

Gael spoke up. “I will have some friends come over and handle this lets get going. I will get the gate and move the sedan blocking the path.”

JT thought to himself he did not even want to know how that was going to be accomplished as the young man ran over to the keypad to open the gates. Trevor had started to moved towards Leslie's Suburban and JT had moved behind him. Tim walked around the other side as Leslie opened the door to grab the shotgun seat. Trevor was watching the gate slowly open. He was at an angle to see the right gate the one nearest the keypad. The small round object attacked grabbed his attention. The green light pulsing on top and then snapping to red. The sedan is rigged everyone down. A massive explosion destroyed the sedan parked across the entrance and sent metal fragments flying.

    Chapter 50

    Something for a Thursday morning.
    Chapter 50

Dan listened for a moment and then closed his phone. Beth Ann looked over to him as he stared off in the distance. He looked over at his fiance and looked into her eyes.

“is everything ok” she asked in a worried tone.

“Not really” He answered before going into a drawn out explanation of what Jeanie and JT had just told him had happened at the Reynolds house. He explained about the attack and the cars watching them from the airport and the probability this was some of the liaison group from inside the FBI. He went on to explain at least to some extent what JT wanted to do in shedding some light on the group and maybe putting some pressure on them for a change. Roger Davis shook his head in agreement and added it might do just that.

Dan looked like he was about to get up when Mr. Davis cleared his throat. “your package came today.”

“excellent! Can you get in touch with your friend and ask if he can come over so we can talk about what is needed. I have the address to a cartel leaders house.” Dan asked somewhat excitedly.

“Dan I know you are angry that they came here and put Beth Ann in danger and all but are you sure about this. I just have to ask. I have the friend and frankly I am willing to fight whoever fights me.” Roger Davis asked looking at the young man.

Dan looked down for sometime and then back up and looked around the table. “I know what I am asking is not some thing to take lightly. We may kill people that were not involved with the attack on us but I get it now Mr. Davis. I liked to listen to Jeanie and Gerry and loved all the angry emails and stuff back and forth. I had a company making 6 figures and the job with them. I paid what I needed to in taxes but I came from money and we always had good accountants. I understood the arguments and everything but I just did not click in until somebody wanted to take something special from me. I love your daughter and have loved her since she first kissed me at the hospital.” Dan said looking over to Beth Ann who was blushing now. “ These people they do not want to conquer us and become our leaders they want to destroy us and this way of life. They want us to live like they do in some tribal enclave and as second class citizens. I get that now and I will do all I can to stop it. I did not start this but I will do everything I can to help JT and Jeanie finish it. This delivery should put more pressure on this IDG group. If the cartels think they bombed them. The cartels will have to go after them. They may try and contact them and ask what happened and why they were attacked but in two days all they are going to get is silence. I have friends around this globe who may have differing ideas about government and such but we have one thing in common. We are great at being bad on the net. In the world of 1 and 0 we are gods and in two days I am going to let the IDG know what it is like to feel the wrath of the net gods. I am going to destroy their whole world and then I am going to keep destroying it. If they try and restore something from a backup I am going to erase the backup and then destroy the site they fixed. I will have systems running for years if need be to wipe them from the fabric of the net.” Dan said his voice growing louder and more serious with each moment. He stopped. “I understand what the consequences are. They picked the wrong side to support.”

Roger Davis nodded and looked sideways at his future son-inlaw from his bowed head, thinking. “I will make the call. I just wanted to check.”

Dan nodded and leaned down kissing Beth Ann. “I have work to do and plans to make I will be back down in a few hours.” He kissed her again and was bounding up the steps.

Her brother looked over. “do you think he can do all that.”

“yep it scares me a little but I think he can do that and more.” She said with a far away look.

Dan walked up to his desk and started on the process to sterilize the data he was going to send to the reporter in Louisville. He worked for about an hour and had all the information that she would need to do a first class report of the liaisons in the FBI. He sent the information to her email address and had a thank you reply in a few seconds and then he deleted the email address. She hoped that if she needed anything she would call JT and he would let Dan know. Dan now went about notifying his friends and colleagues around the globe. He had done favors and work for a variety of companies and meet a lot of people just like him. Most were just garden variety hackers who liked messing with systems for the knowledge of it and did not do a lot of damage but there were also the people that did not care about the damage and then there were the anarchist who just wanted to cause chaos. He sent the call out to all of them. A global call to arms. He had already formulated a plan with a Distributed Denial of Service attack and some worms. He would use a logic bomb to get in an delete everything. He hoped one special friend would answer. He was pretty sure it was a younger girl and she was brilliant. There had been some work a few years back by some naughty hackers to actually cause physical damage to a computer by telling the hard-drive to continue to spin as well as any other drives. If this is allowed to continue then the system over heats and it locks up and fry’s. She had got it to work over and over. He needed that program. Over the next several hours answers came back over the net with promises to help. Angel answered with an encoded email “name the time and place.”. Dan smiled. He now had an army for the fight he needed to do. He only hoped the people getting shot at with bullets would be safe. He worried about Jeanie, JT and the rest of them. He would call tomorrow and ask how the rest of the night went. He walked down the steps Beth Ann met him at the bottom and kissed him. I saved some supper. I did not want to interrupt you.

He hugged her tight his arms encircling her body.”you are never an interruption but a lovely detraction.” he whispered before kissing her neck. He sat down and ate some roast and vegetables and tried not to show the worry he had for his friends.

Trevor was up and walking after a few minutes on the ground. Leslie was out of the back seat and standing near the read of the SUV. He looked over and JT was up holding his head and dusting off. JT looked back and he saw Tim on the ground and went back to offer a hand. He reached down with his left hand. Tim reached up and grabbed his hand and pulled himself up. JT noticed Jeanie in the back seat and she was covered with glass. He told her to lay still as he brushed it off her back and then down to her butt where he hesitated.

Men! she thought. “JT you are not groping me you are clearing glass off so please get on with it.”

With out a word he cleared the remaining glass from her rear and her legs before pulling her out by her waist. Trying his best to avoid any glass that might be underneath. She turned around and thanked him with a glint in her eye and a mischievous smile. JT smiled and then looked past her and saw Gael down and blown several feet back from the gate.

“Gael ..” JT said and pointed.

Everyone made a dash for the body as Jeanie screamed. Trevor reached him first and turned him over. He was alive but in pain. A piece of metal maybe from the car or gate had lodged in his side. It was deeply embedded and oozing blood. Trevor quickly took his jacket off and applied as much pressure as he could with the chunk of metal sticking out. JT called the Ambulance without thinking and looked over at Trevor.

“Shit I am sorry.” JT said quickly.

“No problem he is going to need a hospital. I am calling the sheriff and then will call some of Gael people to watch him at the hospital.” Trevor said as he made his calls and looked back over at the shell of the burned out sedan and what used to be a fortified gate.

JT held onto Jeanie shoulders as she wiped the dirt and debris from his face. Tim ran into the house and got a wet washcloth and handed it down to her touching her arm. She looked back and took the wet cloth and thanked Agent Smith. Gael opened his eyes and looked into Jeanie’s eyes.

“I will be ok. You are not going to get rid of me that easily this time.” He said weakly

“ I do not want to get rid of you just hold on we have an ambulance on the way and some of your people are going to meet you at the hospital. They will watch over you while I KILL EVERYONE OF THESE SONS OF WHORES.” She said screaming up into the air her final threat.

The ambulance arrived and Tim walked out to show them where the back entrance was. The two crews walked in cautiously as they eyed the dead bodies laying around and the destroyed front gate. Sheriff Watts arrived a few minutes later and walked in and over to Trevor immediately. JT stood off to the side. They won the battle but almost lost all of them to the war. They had to be more careful. He was worried about Gael and now also about Jeanie. She was furious...enraged. He is sure this is more then likely what his daughter had come out to after the firefight...and then him killing Simon. There was going to be no way to sate her anger nor should there be. These people wanted to kill them and now they have tried once again. Jeanie watched over Gael as they loaded him into the ambulance a young man arrived as a passenger in a small sports car. He walked over and shook hands with Jeanie and climbed into the back of the ambulance. As he stepped in JT could see a gun tucked into his pants. JT smiled and figured that Gael would be well watched over for the rest of the night.

“JT ...JT this is Ernie Watts the local sheriff.” Trevor said as he introduced the two men.

“Sheriff it is nice to meet you even under these less then happy circumstances.” JT said as he held his hand out to the sheriff. The two shook hands. Agent Smith walked up to the group. “Sheriff I would like you to meet Agent Tim Smith a good friend of mine.”

The Sheriff reached over and shook Tim’s hand. “It is my pleasure also. So what is your plan for the rest of the night. I hope you have changed your minds.”

“I speak for no one but me Sheriff but I am going to the mosque and make sure the system we have in place is working and if it is I intend to kill anyone with one of those phones and anyone who attempts to kill me or anyone with me.” JT said even and slow no anger or remorse just facts.

The Sheriff dropped his head and rubbed his hair with his right hand. “That is the same thing Trevor said. I hopped you were a tad more sane.” he said with a laugh.
“besides I am not sure telling Jeanie right now that we are going to wait would be a wise choice.” JT pointed out.

“yeah you might be better with the mosque.” Sheriff Watts said quietly.

“Does it look like Gael is going to be all right?” Agent Smith asked to no one specific.

The Sheriff spoke up and said he had gotten an update before he had walked over to Trevor. The EMT s thought they had the bleeding stopped and felt they could get him to the ER. Once there they were optimistic that they could take care of him.

“one thing we have overlooked it appears we are out of cars.” JT said with a hint of sarcasm.

“naw just out of the ones we keep outside. Can you handle a small bulldozer?” Trevor asked looking to JT.

    “Yep” JT replied.

Trevor pitched a set of keys to JT and told him what key and where to find the bulldozer. JT walked down the path and found an older caterpillar D4E under a lean-to. He had driven one of these when he first started out working with heavy machinery. He climbed in and started it up. The loud engine roared to life and he used the controls to moved it back and forth getting a feel for the movements. He then turned left and headed back up the trail. He got to the court yard area and moved it forward. He assumed Trevor had wanted him to moved the car out of the drive now. The Cat being the perfect helper. He moved oner closer and got the blade underneath the body of the car and applied a small amount of lift and pushed forward The car moving slowly out from the driveway. JT had pushed the car out of the way and then turned the caterpillar down the road they had taken to get to the back gate and turned it off. He climbed down and looked walked back towards the gate and was meet with Trevor driving an older model Hummer. JT smiled. Trevor got out and opened the back showing JT the assortment of weapons already inside the vehicle. JT, Tim and Jeanie Grabbed their 22 with each wearing a pistol. Leslie was about to climb in the back seat and Trevor took her forearm in his hand.

“I know you want to go but that gash on your head and the beating, I want you to go to the hospital with Ernie and get checked out.” Trevor whispered. She was about to come back with all the reasons she should go. “Please.” She could not answer that one. She was not sure he had ever said please in the time she had known him.

She reached up and kissed him on the lips. “I will. Sheriff can you drop me by the hospital Gael is at.”

The gash on her head from some flying metal was not big but it had bleed badly. She had stopped the bleeding but she was light headed and off balance. He was right. She would of course never admit to that but for now that was enough. The Sheriff opened the door and she slid in the cruiser. He waved as the hummer drove off. JT and Trevor sat in the front seat while Tim and Jeanie had the back and headed to the mosque.

“Tim can you call the agent on site and ask her what is going on if anything.” JT asked looking over his shoulder.

Tim called Tessa on the phone and waited. She picked up and he went on to ask her if anything had happened at the mosque. She responded that it was the same she had stayed parked a good ways back. Tim had let her in on the bombing and then told her they were on the way and should be there in a few minutes if she wanted to leave. She hesitated and told Tim that she was staying. She would play their backup and make sure no one came in behind them. Tim initially tried to talk her out of it but soon found it was a fruitless task. He described the car and let her know to be on the look out for them.
    She said she would.

The drive to the mosque was a bout 10 minutes and Trevor had kept a close eye that no one was following them this time. They pasted Agent Mills car and drove to a parking space beside the mosque wall. JT pulled out the list of numbers that Dan had given him and Trevor had gotten out quickly and grabbed a parabolic microphone from a box in the back. He plugged it into the cigarette plug and turned it on. JT called one of of the numbers as Trevor pointed the mic towards the window in the back that Jeanie pointed out. The window sat above and to the right of the set of steps the men came out when Jeanie made her little junket here before. The microphone picked up chatter mostly in Arabic and then JT pushed send. The sound of a phone ringing could be heard with the microphone. JT hung of the call and then called another number and ringing could be heard again and then finally one more. He knew they would be getting suspicious but then again that did not matter. All four patriots looked at each other. They only question now was do they fight them inside the mosque or outside in the courtyard.

“inside or outside?” JT asked the question that everyone was considering.

Jeanie answered for them all. “call them to the courtyard.”

The four got out of the hummer and Agent Smith waved to Agent Mills making a hand gesture to let her know they were going in. Trevor had popped open the back and grabbed the AR and several magazines. Tim ,JT and Jeanie all had their suppressed 22. Tim had picked up one of the AK and grabbed two more magazines from the body before they left his 22 slung across his back. He looked over at JT and shrugged his shoulders as he pulled back the slide and moved a round into the chamber. The foursome checked the ammo for the pistols they carried and when satisfied they walked over to the side gate. There was a new lock in place. Trevor quietly inquired if they was another way in and Jeanie shook her head in the negative. Trevor decided to try and pick the lock and the four were standing at his side when an old man walking with a cane came around the corner. Jeanie turned and saw the old man and let out a quiet curse while she reached back for her 45. JT turned and saw the old man and grabbed Jeanie’s arm before she could come out with the hand gun. It was obvious they had guns but JT did not think this man was a danger to them and did not want Jeanie to draw down on him unless needed besides he could have called out by now.

“good evening old man” JT said with a smile as he reached out to shake the mans hand. JT noticed the man was easily in his 70 and walked with a cane his wrinkled face worn from the ages but his eyes were bright and lively.

“good evening young man.” He said as he took JT hand in a fragile but warm grip. “The men who attend to matters in the back room do not represent this mosque. They drove out are Imam when he called the FBI on them.”

“They will be of no more concern after this night...old man.” JT said as they parted hands.

“then may Allah bless you.” he said as he began to walk down the sidewalk away from them.
“and may God keep you” JT said as he saw the old man turn and smile. The old man bowed his head slightly and walked on.

“you know it might be easier if you walked in the back driveway .. down the alley 10 yards and turn right.” he said as he cane clicked on the side walk with each step.

JT watched as he walked down the sidewalk and past the alley. Picking up his cane to point as he walked past it. JT smiled and looked around at the others and they all began to head to the alleyway. They turned down the alley and went the 10 yards and were greeted with a large gateway opening into the courtyard. It looked like it was used for deliveries but now only a few cars were parked close to the steps much like the other night. Trevor cut from the group and went over to the stairs climbing them two at a time until her was at the back door. He could not see into the room directly but could see heads from his vantage point. He counted 15 people in the room smoking and talking. Several were in suits and looked like they may have been with the liaison group but the other were dressed more casual. As Trevor was looking in the back window JT walked around slowly and shot a round into every vehicles tires. The 22 making barely a sound above the slide working. Trevor walked over to the group and saw JT moving back towards them also he looked past him and to the cars and noticed the flattened tires. He smiled.

“So how do we handle this.” JT asked quietly.

“looked like 15 in the room not sure if more are sitting. I could only see the heads.” Trevor said to everyone’s nod. “We need them to all come out here I do not want to be chasing them through the mosque.” He added.

“agreed if you can be beside the steps and make sure none go back up I will stand here and call them out. Jeanie and Tim can be over towards the cars and we will have them between us but that does not leave you a lot of cover if they start shooting your way. We will have them in a triangle have to make sure we do not shoot each other also.” JT said looking towards Trevor for some acknowledgment of like or dislike.

“They would be more likely to come down if they only see one man and then yeah we could open up on them keeping a good eye where the rounds are going. Tim and Jeanie will be behind cars you and I will be more in the open and you know you are going to be out in the middle all alone.” Trevor said emphasizing the alone part.

“Sounds like a plan. None of them leaves this courtyard.” he nodded to Tim and Jeanie “get in position I will call the lambs.” Everyone stood and looked back and forth. No one said anything just nodded and went to their places. JT stood there alone and opened his phone. He watch Tim and Jeanie get behind one of the large sedans and then he looked to Trevor who was hidden in the shadows of the stairs. If they came out the door all together well as a group and got away from the steps this all might go down as planned. Then again it might all be a bust. JT pushed the button for one of the numbers again and let it ring. The phone was answered but with silence. He smiled. “The people you sent to the house did not do a very good job. I am still standing and I await your presence in the courtyard if you sons of whores dare.” JT could see someone look out the window and the one of the other windows and the finally a man came out the back door. JT had the security six in his right hand and in his left he held the cold steel spine flat against his forearm. The man who had exited the door ran down the steps with the large scimitar blade in his hand and ran straight for JT. JT remained still as the man came closer and closer. Jeanie became worried but Tim placed a had on her rifle as if to say all would be alright. She looked at him with worried eyes. She had seen one man down today. She would go crazy if this were another. The man ran and swung with all his might at JT head. JT ducked the blow and pulled the spike across the ribs and sliced the man open on the left side. The man screamed and turned. JT could tell he had no gun visible and put the security six in the holster and then transferred the spike to his right hand. He dodged the back swing from the attacker and sliced down on the wrist as it went by. He moved forward and pierced into the large thigh muscle and then backed away. The attacker had now been slowed considerably. The man switched the large blade from his right to his left hand and JT stood motionless. He watched as the man raised the blade and was bringing it down forward and into his skull. JT moved forward at the last second moving within the arch of the swing and blocking up with his forearm and into the mans elbow, with his right hand he held the spike tightly and pierced under the shoulder into the arm pit and angled upward. The blow was swift and when he pulled back and stepped away he knew he had made contact. The brachiel and axillary artery run close under the skin and with the right thrust and direction it is deadly. He watched as the man staggered and then went to is knees. The whole side of his body now covered in blood. It was completely unnecessary but JT pulled the Pistol and shot him in the head. He felt the others might need some coaxing to come out. He was correct several of the men from inside the window were now on their way down and the men that had been at the door were heading down the steps. He wished they had all been together but this is what they had and they had to deal with it. One of the men from the steps fired on JT as he stood waiting he simply raised the Ruger and fired a round striking the man in the torso and sending him to the ground. He hoped the others would wait before firing. It looked like most of the men were out of the door and then JT fired several rounds as they came down the steps. Striking another man and hitting one more in the leg. He turned and headed for the only cover and that was a large tree at the edge of the compound. He ducked behind it as several rounds from hands guns and AKs tore into the bark. Something about this he thought is very familiar. He smiled and hugged against the tree as more rounds came in. he reached down and grabbed a speed-loader flipping open the cylinder with flip of the wrist and turning the barrel up. He had to press the spent cartridge ejector for one stubborn case and then loaded the new rounds. He peek from beside the tree and saw all the men were down on the ground and slowly approaching his location.

Trevor saw the men all run down the steps after JT dispatched their brother and then when he shot two more. It seemed all of them wanted in on it now. JT had jumped behind a tree before the gang let out a barrage of bullets. He raised the AR and took aim at the back three men and fired. His first round struck one of the men in the back row and he went down on his face. Trevor had timed his shooting when they had fired again. No one noticed a man down in the back row until one of the men beside him almost tripped over him. He turned and saw Trevor and tried to fire but was hit in the chest and head before he could pull the AK up for shooting. Trevor made sure to keep his rounds to the right of the tree but when he fired again it happened just as the terrorists stopped. The gig was up several of the men turned and fired. Trevor scooted back to the corner near the steps which offered some protection. If they tried to fire on him they would also be in his sites.

Tim and Jeanie had watched the scene unfold and looked to each other as Trevor let loose the last rounds and began to take fire. Tim moved to the front of the car and Jeanie stood up and fired. The AK covering any sound the silenced 22 would make they fired on the group. They had to make sure to keep their rounds in the center so as not to fire on the tree or back to the steps. The group of men now were in a panic they were taking fire from all sides where as they came down to kill this dog now they were being chopped down. JT reached around the tree and fired several shots and men closest to him. He saw a couple of men drop and then he ducked back for safety from incoming fire. One of the men broke for the stairs and Trevor saw him heading his way. He pulled out his 45 and shot him twice in the chest. He was down. Another man headed for the open gate as his brothers fell. Jeanie saw him break and took aim and fired. She missed. She clipped the tree JT was using for cover. JT was about to go around the tree and give chase when he heard several shots. He was no expert but it sounded like 9mm to him. Two of the men still standing ran for the cars with their knifes drawn. Jeanie put her rifle down and scrambled over the top of the hood before Tim could get a hand on her. She pulled the warthog from the sheath and headed for the two men. JT saw what Jeanie had done and tried to get a shot at one of the men but they were moving to fast. He turned and there were two men still shooting. He leveled the 357 and fired and then again both were hit he ran over and fired again and one of the men was down on his back, the other down to his knees. He walked up and fired point blank int his forehead. JT swung the 22 from around his should and tried to focus on one of the men running at Jeanie. It was no use they were to close no. She was now running full bore at the two men who were doing the same. They both swung and she ducked. As she went between them she sliced one of the men across the ribs and turned as soon as she was past and sliced at the back of the other man. The men screamed in pain and anger. Jeanie stood her ground and waited for them to attack. Her eyes filled with rage as one of the men ran directly towards her and knocked her over. She did not have time to dodge as he ran into her but she did have time to shift her weight and she rolled with his attack. She rolled backwards and came to rest on the balls of her feet ready to moved. Her knife buried to the hilt in the mans chest. He turned over gasping trying to breath and coughing up blood. The other attacker sensing some unseen advantage ran forward. Jeanie lept to her feet and blocked the downward blow twisting his wrist and causing him to loose the blade. She pushed him forward as he was already off balance and tripped him with her landing on his back. She reached around and tucked her arm under his chin and pulled back with her other arm. He rolled over and tried to stop her from choking him. Jeanie wrapped her legs around his body trapping one of his arms as she pulled tighter. She pulled and strained as Tim and JT arrived. He was of course dead by then. JT touched her shoulder. She looked up into his eyes. He could tell she was crying. He nodded and squeezed her shoulder she released the hold. Trevor began to walk over. He had scanned the lot before coming to his daughter. Trevor encircled Jeanie with his arms and held her close as she wept.

“lets go see how Gael is doing.” Trevor said to her as she pulled away wiping the tears from her face.

JT was about to say something when he noticed out of the corner of his eye something come between the light from the door and he raised the 22. He could make out a gun and fired before he got a good sight alignment. One of the rounds went into a window and the other two took the man to the ground. Another shadow came around the corner. JT drew down before he could see it was a woman and he hands were empty.

“hold on JT that is Tessa.” Tim said quickly.

“yep I assumed she was our partner that took out the runner. Thank you Agent Mills.” JT said as he slung the 22 back over his shoulder.

“Not a problem. I am glad I could help” She replied “Oh and Thanks for not shooting me.” She said laughing. “The sheriff said to leave this place as it is he is sure there is some kinda firefight going on here. His boys will come by later and check it out.”

“alright lets hit the road. Tessa we are going to the hospital to check on Gael you are more then welcome to tag along.” JT said as they 4 began walking to the gate.

“Thanks ...JT but this has been one crazy day and I am going to go home and get drunk. It has been some time since I had to fire that thing and the first time I killed someone.” Tessa said as she walked out of the gate to her sedan.

“well I am glad you were there. Sorry you had to do that.”JT replied.

“nope it was the right thing to do. Yep alcohol and maybe a booty call on an old boyfriend.” She laughed.

JT laughed as he walked over close to her. He reached out and hugged her. “thank you” He whispered. “have a good time” he said as he bent down and kissed her cheek.

She blushed. “Dawes was right you are a good man.” She slid into the car and started it up and backed out of the alley.

The other four made their way to the hummer and headed to the hospital. JT looked at his watch it was nearing 11 pm the other team would soon be starting to get into position. Hopefully for a long quiet night. JT hoped that was the case but he feared something much worse. He wanted to go see Gael and head to the airport and get back home. He wanted to know what they found as soon as he could. He also wanted to hug his wife and kiss her. He longed to wrap his arms around her. None of their team had been seriously hurt. He hoped that were still true with Gael but now the magnitude of all that happened today was starting to hit him. I hope the ranger has a quiet and boring night. God I pray that he thought.

    10 Chapter 51

Some notes before we take the plunge. Not that you will notice in this chapter but JT son changed his name to Ethan. Also the little town at the border well I changed that to Rio Bravo. I liked the land there better.

    and now for your consumption.

    Chapter 51

Ranger Crockett and his team had made it to the border without incident. They had not run into any locals that might be lookouts and were now sitting in the darkness. The had come south of Rio Bravo and taken state road 83 and crossing down a dirt road to Espejo Molina road. They could have made the change closer to town and on paved roads but that would have put them close to more people and that they did not need. The cartels paid people on both sides of the border to do nothing more then tell them when knew people were in town. The followed down that road for a piece and then turned right heading towards the river. They found a passage between the tress that lined the waterway and pulled up and parked back about 20 yards. They walked slowly towards the water and their objective. An island in the water, technically US land but used by smugglers and a perfect place if you had to bring something large across. They lay up on the dunes spread out about 20 yards apart and checking for any signs that someone might be on the island or on the other side. One of the Texas guard corporals pulled off a square pack and opened a large padded case and unloaded a sizable night scope. Another man pulled out a thermal imaging scope and began its setup. Ranger Crockette watched as his team went about its mission to try and visually find the targets they had been told about. He called one of the corpsmen over who had been identified as a technical specialist and handed him the numbers for the phones he had been given by JT. He watched as the men went about setting up a small base station of gear aimed at one thing and that was to find whoever was out there. He looked across the river into the darkness and back down at the equipment. They had cut some brush to mask the light from the devices but it was mostly low light emitting equipment. The young technician typed at a small keyboard and watched as small circled x began to propagate on the screen. Then as if by magic on overlay of their location was dropped into the field of view. The technician zoomed in and waited as the screen adjusted. The Ranger stood and watched the dance of technical prowess in front of him and waited for the finale. The picture came into view and it looked like the little lights were only a short distance from them. He knew however that was not exactly the case. One of the men looked up to him nodding his head and then quietly gave some coordinates to his team mate monitoring the other station.

“Ranger Sir it looks good they are about 2 klicks ...opps sorry sir a little less then a mile and a half in and to the east sir.” The young man said quietly as he leaned in and spoke to the Ranger.

Doctor Wise was close enough to hear and tapped the ranger on the shoulder. She motioned with her head and he walked a step or two back as the young corpsman knelt back down and watched his screens.

She leaned in and whispered “if this thing is nuclear and well frankly if the terrorist want to escalate that is what I have always guessed they would use, I may be able to pick something up on my equipment if it is not to well shielded. It is hard to say but now I know the distance I can give it a shot if you would like.”

Ranger Crockett listened closely and watched her eyes. He nodded his head and quietly asked if she needed any technical help. She nodded and he snapped his fingers and leaned down speaking quickly to one of the specialists. The young man was up and headed to a small group and came back with a short young man with red hair and fare skin.

“This is one of out technical experts. He is a jack of all trades.”

“excellent go with Dr. Wise and do whatever you can to help her.” The ranger said to the wiry soldier. As the soldier walked off he looked towards the young man who brought him over and cocked a halfway smile. “He does not look old enough to shave much less be in the guard. You sure he is one of the men and not one of their little brothers.”

The young guardsmen laughed quietly. “Yes Sir our training sergeant said something similar before that young man made him tap out 3 times he has some serious hand to hand skills. Oh and he shoots expert with a rifle Sir.”

    The Ranger smiled.

In Minnesota in a mosque outside the area of the Mall of America a cell phone rang and rang.

“Imam Aneef I am sorry but there is no answer with our brothers in Minnesota. There is word of the shooting at the house address we had but there is no word from the Mosque or from the people sent to the house. There is also no news casts about the Mosque. We are listening to radio traffic from the police and rescue but nothing so far. We have friends in the area. We can have them drive by.” The young man stood in the doorway leading into the large office. The dark wood and pulled shades leaving little light with which to gauge the expression from the old man.

“Yes have someone drive by. We must know if they were followed back to the Mosque. Have we tried all the numbers for the Agents we ask to go there.” The old man said in a rasping voice as he puffed on the pipe.

“We have tried all we have it appears that Simon may have had the main list with him when the van caught fire. We are putting a complete list together from the groups lists in the field. We are also working to get into Simon's computer.”

“Yes... Simon's arrogance cost him his life and that of his brothers. Let me know when we have word.” The old man said.

“yes sir, as soon as I have word.” The young man said sounding relieved to be leaving the room.

    “a moment....”

The young man stopped mid stride he could feel his heart beating wildly inside his chest.

“we have the number for our people on the border with the weapon?”

“Yes Iman we have those numbers.” The young man said quietly.

There was a long delay. The Imam sat on the large pillows and leaned back inhaling deeply. “Send them to Los Angeles. Time is short. Tell them to go with all haste and detonate at will.”

A sharp intake could be heard from the young man. “yes Imam I will call now.”

Ranger Crockett stood by and watched all the work being done. It was odd for him to be the man out of place but this group was well put together and they knew what they were there to do. He watched them work the equipment assured that if there was any movement from the group across the river he would know it. He had not heard from the good Doctor in some time so he walked back across the small field and to the back of the SUV they had arrived in. Dr. Wise was just finishing getting her monitoring station setup. She had opened one of the boxes and had a laptop sitting on it and connected to a small parabolic antenna she had setting on top of the SUV. As he stood there she reached back into the darkness of the Suburban and pulled out a Frisbee. Well it looked like one at first but then he looked and the center was out of it and a small prop was centered. It looked like it was made of black plastic or something lightweight. It had a couple of small motors attached and underneath it carried some small rod like protrusions. She was holding it on the edge as the young man helping her pushed a button on the laptop and the prop began to spin slowly. He pressed another button and she let go of the disk the Ranger started to step forward in an attempt to grab the disk sure it would fall to the ground. Before he could get close he saw it was hovering. The disk stayed level, still and quiet. He smiled at the contraption. She turned and looked his way and sat down on a chair she had found in the back of the truck. He saw to the right of the laptop was a joystick sitting on a larger square base. She moved the stick to the right and then to the left and he watched as the small drone moved slowly back and forth.

“It has a 5 mile range for being airborne. It can go out and drop or it can go out and come back the sensors on the bottom can tell us if there is anything radioactive as long as I can pass within 100 feet of it.” She said with a smile.

“There is a lot of open area but maybe we will get lucky. Let it go and see what you can find.” He said nodding his head. “let me know if you see something.”

The small drone climbed into the air as she maneuvered the joystick.

“Ranger Ranger” a hushed voice called out.

Ranger Crockett looked up and saw one of the men motioning for him to come over to a small group standing around one of the monitor speaker setups. He quickly walked over and knelt down.

“We have an incoming call to one of those numbers. I have been scanning the frequencies.”

“can we pinpoint a location with this while we listen and give it to the doctor so she can get a scan over it?” The Ranger asked quietly and quickly.

“can do ranger. I am putting it on speaker.”

    Yes.
Is the package safe and in working order.
    Yes
Proceed with all haste to Los Angles, detonate immediately.

“I want a copy of that and I want the location as close as you can give me.” The Ranger quietly spoke. One of the men had a small piece paper with coordinate numbers on it quickly in hand. “take that to the doctor and let her know what we heard. Do we have a secure connection I need to make a call?”

“yes sir.” the young soldier handed him a satellite phone. “It is scrambled sir even if they can pick it up it will be like any other border signal to them.”

He called the office of the Governor and and spoke with the representatives who he had been dealing with throughout this whole issue and then was passed to the Governor and after repeating the story again was passed to the General in charge of the Texas Guard.
“Ranger I am told we have a situation down on the ground near you and I am to afford you any and all services I can offer.” The boisterous voice said from the other end of the line. “if this damn thing is what I have been told I will do whatever you ask and within my power.”

“Sir, I appreciate that and will hope that we can keep this down to the minimum but I think I need to consider some kind of backup just in case this gets past us. Is there any reason we would have some birds in the air down this way or would that look odd.” The Ranger asked quickly formulating a plan for a just in case scenario.

“I can task a couple of Apache down that way. It is not that unusual for them to do testing and night flights down in that area because of the hills and all being a good terrain for low level flight work. I can damn well do that.” The General responded.

“excellent can you ask them to get airborne and with Gods help they get to look at a beautiful Texas sky and nothing else. When they get down here they can contact me and we will coordinate operations and if needed attack locations.” Ranger Crockett came back.

“It will be done this minute, Ranger...from your mouth to Gods ears. I hope this is all a mistake. Good Luck Ranger.” The General was off the line and Crockett was sure he was making calls and sending two Apache attack helicopters to back up his plan.

    “Major” Ranger Crockett called out.

Major Miles Leland was a tall lanky man. He had been in the army and then in the national guard and finally had settled in the Texas Guard. He stood 6' 4 and weighted a trim 195 lbs. He had dark hair with gray starting to creep in around the ears but what could you expect at 58 he thought to himself. He had worked with the ranger in the past and liked Crockett no nonsense style. He hand picked this group with the ranger and it was a good solid group of men. He worried about the female scientist but he understood the need to verify and to dismantle if needed. His tech team was top notch so mainly for the last half hour or so he let them do what they were trained to do and that was to find the bad guys and hopefully flush them out. Major Leland walked over to Ranger Crockett.

“Major your men have done a great job as I would have expected nothing less. I did let the Governor know about the picked up transmission and they connected me to the General of the Texas Guard. He is sending two Apaches down to this area to do night maneuvers.” The Ranger said quickly and quietly looking over to the Major, then shrugging his shoulders. “Just in case.”

“Yeah with the information we have now we cannot afford to let this get by us. Even if it means blowing the damn carrier up. I would rather have that stuff spread across a few acres here then going nuclear in the middle of a major city.” The Major replied letting the Ranger know he was completely informed of all that had been going on even if he was in the background. “do we have anything from the good doctor yet?”

“nothing yet but it should be close to time for her little drone to be over the target. I will check in and let you know.” The Ranger stated.

“good I am going to get my fire team ready. When we know if they are crossing and where we can be ready for them.” The Major replied. “I mean no disrespect Ranger but the fire team will be the ones handling the encounter unless things go badly and we have to have more help. They are trained for that and any additional people complicates the situation.” He added.

The Ranger understood all to well. He was used to being in the lead but this time he was going to have to be in the background. These men knew what to do and how to do it. That is why he had asked for them to begin with. He had to let them do their job. Although it hurt his ego slightly he knew what the major was saying a he agreed.

“None taken. We need that package and your guys are the best chance at that.” The ranger said before he walked over to the back of the SUV to check with Dawn about what she and the drone had come up with.

Dr. Wise was looking at the screen and maneuvering the little disk back and forth in a a zigzag pattern. It allowed for her to cover most of the area she needed and get to the destination coordinates as quickly as she could. The flight time took about 10 minutes and she was close to the location the technician had given to her. Ranger Crockett stood behind her shoulder and watched as she hovered and then started pushing buttons on the keyboard. She let go of the stick and the craft started a grid pattern already established by the computer to save time and battery life. The infrared was already showing some life down on the ground. There looked to be a couple of guards close to where the drone was hoovering and then as it moved closer to the main coordinates there was a small encampment. It was hard to tell with the light and the grainy camera but it looked like a group if 15 or so men in 4 or 5 tents. There looked to be an older truck and maybe a couple of jeeps but they were not giving off any heat so it was hard to make out in the darkness. The small device hovered slowly following its set path and taking measurements of all kinds. The devices that the ranger had noticed measured just about everything biological particles, chemical agents and of course background radiation. So far nothing had triggered any of the sensors and for that the Ranger was very grateful. He was just about to declare that these men did not have the device that they must be picking it up from somewhere else. This would have been bad of course but then it would not have fallen on his group to stop them if the item were not here. He smiled slightly and thought to himself that if this needed to be done it was this group that needed to do it. As many questions as he had about this whole situation these men were some of the best in Texas and they would get the job done. Any doubts had to be left there for now. Another tent with 6 heat signatures came onto the screen. His shoulders sank. These were the terrorists. The others were the men getting them across. He continued watching as she took back over the controls and hovered over this location. It was within a few feet of the numbers she had been given a small square appeared on the screen and a digital pointer began to move to the numbers on the right side of the small square. Once the small device seemed to calibrate itself it began to flash. Ranger Crockett could feel in his heart this was bad news. Dawn Wise closed the application and then pushed a button it came back up on the screen as it had done before and once it was running it began flash. She watched it for a moment as the needle bounced back and forth and finally settled into an area of movement. She turned to speak to the Ranger her eyes betraying what she was about to explain to him. “I have checked it twice and everything seems to be in order. There is a definite signature coming from something down there. It is not dangerous as it is and thank God it is not leaking but it looks like they have a nuclear device.”

The Ranger felt his stomach sink as she laid out the information. There was no way she could tell a great deal about the device. She took a few educated guesses and from their talk in the car he was prepared to take those as close to fact as he could allow. She surmised it might be like one of the so called suitcase nukes the Russians and Americans purportedly made. She had never put much stock in them even if their were photos. It was more then likely a miniaturized nuke weighing about 50 or 60 pounds but would not fit in some suitcase. It fit in some specialized backpack and could assembled. The yield was hard to tell. She assumed this would be something in the low kiloton range and would effect a half mile radius with the fireball and do billions of dollars in damage. She would not even fathom a guess as to the causalities depending on where they placed it. After she was done with the assessment Ranger Crockett knew he needed to let the Major know what they had found and what Dr. Wise theorized. He walked over to a group of vehicles and could see the Major speaking to several of his men as they suited up. They were checking equipment and ammunition as the Major explained how he wanted any encounter to go. The Ranger caught his eye and the Major excused himself and made his way past the men over to speak with Ranger Crockett. The two conversed for a short time. The Major beginning to look more concerned as the conversation continued. As they were about to part Dr. Wise walked up and began speaking to both the men. She explained that it looked like the compound was breaking up and getting ready to move. The men in the last tent had started what looked like an open bed truck and were waiting for the others to get loaded and moving. The major whistled and motioned for one of the technicians to come to him. He explained they had found the people with the phones and asked about watching them in real time on the equipment they had. The technician thought for a moment and then asked a very serious question that made them all stop in their tracks.

“I do not mean to speak out of turn Sir but do they have a nuke on them.” The young man asked.

They all looked at him with wide eyes and questioning stares.

“I am sorry Sir it is just the scuttlebutt and well what else would we be doing out here with Dr. Wise. Anyway I am down this road... If they have some nuke we may be able to use a satellite to follow them. There is a bird overhead and we could link it down and see if it sees what we need it to see. We have the codes to use it. As long as the DOD does not get pissy and shut us down we will be fine. Once I get a positive hit we might be able to track them all from here even if they do shut us down. The phone call was not long enough to get a good lock.” The young man completed his thoughts awaiting the eruption from his commander. “I am sorry sir if I spoke out of turn.”

The Major looked around at the doctor and Ranger and then back to the young soldier. “let us presume that you might find something like that. I need a way to track that group of men. Us any and all resources but we cannot loose them once they are located.”

“yes Sir.” The young man replied thankful that he seemed to have escaped at least for now any reprimand for his indiscretion.

The Major had his fire team deploy on the rives edge so once they touched American soil it was a go. He also sent a small 3 man team to the island. They waded through the current and hid about 20 yards down from the main crossing area. Major Leland hoped these guys would follow their drug running buddies and come right across at the tip of the island. It was the lowest point in the area and offered the most cover. If they could reach the island and then hide in the tall brush they could be across the last part quickly or wait if they saw anything once they were on the island. If they did that this time his team would be ready. The three men on the island would catch them from behind and then his main fire team of 6 men could get them in a crossfire once they were in the middle of the river past the island. He tasked two of his best shooters who he had specifically asked to bring their SOCOM 308 in stead of the 223 AR to stop the vehicles. Once the lead one was stopped he hoped the other two would be stuck behind it and easy targets. It all worked so easy in his mind. The Ranger and most of the support team members had moved back with the vehicles. Although they were not to be in the main firefight they all got ready just in case something happened and the some of the terrorists got through. The Ranger was sitting next to Dr. Wise as she watched the group starting to move towards the river slowly. The drone had been up past it maximum flight time so the Ranger had her move it away from the group and try and get it back to home base. The last thing they needed was the little drone dropping out of the sky and someone finding it or worse it finding them as it fell back to the earth. He felt a great deal of relief as the drone came in sight and dropped close to the SUV the battery finally giving up its last bit of power. Dr. Wise closed her equipment back up in the secure cases and pulled the rifle bag out. She unzipped the back and flipped it open. She released the AR and reached and grabbed two of the 5 magazines she had loaded in the bag sliding one in the rifle and loading a round. The Ranger checked the 45 colt mountain gun and reached in behind the drivers seat and pulled out a leather scabbard. He untied the leather lace and pulled the soft leather top back. Dr. Wise watched as he laid the scabbard down on the seat and pulled a lever action from it. The stainless marlin lever action guide gun was cherished possession of the Ranger. The 45/70 was a gift from his late father when he was 16 and he had lovingly cared for it ever since. It had taken much of the game that he had hunted and even a Grizzly bear that had went rogue on a friends farm up in Montana killing two of his horses. It had seen him through some trying times and hoped that it would do the same this night. He pulled a box of ammunition out of a pack and began loading the rifle. After he had it loaded he put the rest of the rounds in his jacket pocket and walked back towards Dr. Wise. One of the young sergeants came around with the satellite phone again and handed it to the Ranger. When the ranger put the phone up to his ear he could had communications with one of the two Apache. Ranger Crockett thanked him for coming down this way and let him in on the information they had at this point. You could tell from the change in the pilots voice he understood the gravity of the situation. The ranger explained what they had planned and if something got away or they needed assistance they would call on the standard communications channel. If they had to do that it would mean surprise was not longer and issue and all hell was breaking loose. He explained that he hoped that scenario did not happen. The birds would be backup if the shit truly hits the fan he finally stated. It was now time to wait.

The Major and his men were getting updates every minute or so. The column of vehicles was moving slowing over the rutted dirt road. It was understandable they did not want to do a lot of bouncing around. Although the Major was sure the device would not detonate he doubted if he would want to be going very fast with a parcel such as that over this terrain. The young soldier who had been tasked with keeping track of the group had been disconnected from the DOD satellite but by then he had a lock on their location and was following them with a carrier signal sent to one of the phones and traced back. Major Leland was waiting patiently. His men and he had been in this position before and it was sometimes the hardest part. Trying to remain still and make no sound as they waited for the enemy. A text to his blackberry from the men on the island they could hear vehicles. He touched the communications button on his neck twice it had already been preset as a signal that they were close. The Major made eye contact with the technician that had held the doctor and then waved him close. The wirey young man made his way silently towards the commander.

“yes Sir, do you want me to scout and see if I can see them.” He asked.

Major Leland had another thought. “No. drop the AR and head to the truck grab the 50 cal with the night scope and head up that hill over there. I want the vehicles stopped and not starting again. Also I am going to make this crystal clear so you know this is my decision alone. You fire on anything that fires on you or this command. Is that completely clear.”

The young man stared into the commanders eyes for a brief moment. “Yes Sir” The young man was off moving quickly back to the vehicles. He pulled the back gate down on one of the Suburbans and pulled out a large rifle case. The Barrett inside was a semi-automatic 50 cal with a 4th generation ATN mars night scope. He pulled the case out of the vehicle and headed up the small hill. He knew the men and vehicles were getting closer and he also knew why the Major called for this. If these guys called for backup the command would need all the firepower they had. The Mexican army would being everything they had and the exchange with the Major said it all. He was going to fire back with everything he had. He unpacked the heavy rifle and flipped the legs out. He laid the blanket on the soft dirt and sand and then placed the rifle on the blanket before he got into firing position. He tucked the rifle into position and flipped the switch for the scope bathing the world in a weird green filter. He could actually make out the first truck as he saw it approaching the water. He looked back along the caravan and could see two Jeeps and one more pickup. He assumed the back vehicle would be the one they were after. It that one was the main target nothing could be aimed for the bed or low in the cab. If he needed to shoot that vehicle he would try and wait until it was broadside and he could go through the engine.

The lead truck had made it over the small land strip in the middle of the river and then to the other side. The two jeeps were in the process of getting across the water with the teams of soldiers that were guarding this delivery. Many were none to happy with the idea of this kind of support for the terrorist but they had their orders. They worried if this actually worked and could be traced back to a crossing over the Mexican border people in the US would retaliate in some way. Although the government was neutered as far as being a super power under the new president the people were always a force to contend with. The last vehicle with the six Muslims who had brought the backpack with them and paid a substantial amount for an armed unit to protect it was just now leaving the tip of the island and making its way onto American soil.

Major Lelands men had watched as the vehicles crossed the last part of the river and drove close to their position. The convoy had crossed about 10 yards to the north of the contingent of men. Once the last vehicle had moved away from the island a quick click to the communications unit on his neck and the others would wait for him to fire. Once he started the two men with the 308 would shoot for the trucks engines as well as the 50 cal now that it was in play. The Major took aim and fired a single shot taking out a passenger in the lead vehicle who looked to be some type of Mexican Officer. Then all hell broke loose the two team members with the SOCOM M1A fired disabling the first truck but by this time the second and third vehicle had moved from behind it hearing the first shot and headed for the banks of the river. An ear piercing boom and one of the Jeeps engines simply exploded in sparks and fluids and finally catching on fire. The men in the Jeep ran from the disabled vehicle to setup a line on the banks and began to return fire. The team on the island had started to fire at the tires on the last vehicle they wanted to avoid any shots into the cab or bed if they could avoid it. A second report from the 50 cal and the last jeep was stopped just short of the rivers edge and effectively making a barricade for the last vehicle. The Mexican army members escorting the terrorists began to fire back at the team members to try and divert fire from the remaining truck in hopes it might be able to get past the 3 vehicles that had been stopped and continue on.

Major Leland called over the communications “ Take out the last vehicle but be careful.”

The young man on the hill knew that the major was talking to him and he carefully sighted in on the engine compartment. He would like for them to be angled just a bit differently. “island fire team can you take some shots to that back passenger area, see if they will turn about 10 degrees up river.”

“roger that” came a quick reply and he could see rounds begin to hit close to the passenger rear tire and then saw one of the men riding in the back of the truck struck and fall over the side. As he expected the truck turned just enough and he fired. The downward angle and the new position gave him a perfect angle to go through the engine and down into the water. The end result was a large hunk of metal that used to be a vehicle that was not going anywhere anytime soon. The five men in the truck scrambled out and began to run for the shore. There was no way to tell who had the package or if any of them did. It could still be in the truck.

“Major the men in the truck are scattering in the darkness one was hit by fire from the island an fell out of the bed. The other are moving towards the shore it is impossible for me to see who has the backpack. It looks like they all may have packs. It could be a means of deception. Have to look for all of them while one try’s and slips by with the real goods.” The young man said quickly.

Major Leland had no intentions of letting them slip away. “I need eyes on the men from the last truck. The need to be taken down and with all do speed.”

Replies came quickly and people starting calling out kills. While part of the team engaged the military group the others took precise aim at the purported terrorists. As the count climbed the sniper on the hill watched and kept his own count as the men dropped from well placed shots. The Mexican military were outgunned and out shot. One by one they we shot and killed by the expert fire team. As their numbers dwindled a few tried to head back across the river and were picked off by the team on the island.

“Dino what is the status are we clear now.” Major Leland asked.

Dino was the young man who had supplied the heavy duty punch when needed. He was Dennis Orio but from early childhood he had just been Dino. He was a hand to hand combat expert and shot expert . He had done several tours in Iraq but then came back to Texas and joined the guard. Why should he worry about what was happening in the middle east when America was under attack. He thought when finally signing up for the Texas Guard. “yes Sir I do not see anything moving from my vantage point. It looks like we got them all Sir.”

“Excellent you keep and eye out and we are going to verify kills down here and find that damn package.” The Major replied.

    “Yes Sir.”

“All right men I want a count and I want the 6 men found and verified.” The Major called out. Initially two men came out and checked for clear and then the rest moved from their positions and started to check the bodies of the Mexican Military or who ever was giving cover to the terrorists. In the end it did look like the men in uniform were military. Three of the terrorists were dead in the river one had made it to the shore before being shot and one was shot in the back of the head and still in the truck. That left the one Dino had said he saw drop out of the bed shot from the island. The pulled the 5 bodies onto shore and began looking them over and immediately became worried. The reason the men were so easy to stop was each man was wearing a backpack. They each must have weighed 50 pounds.

    “Ranger are you listening”

    “Yes Major”

“Bring the doc we have a problem.”

After this had went so good so far the ranger was concerned to say the least. What could these men each be packing. The doctor had overheard the conversation on the rangers handset and reached out grabbing her gun and headed off at a fast pace. The ranger with the lever action was not far behind. We they arrived at the clearing where the fight had taken place she leaned down and inspected the first of the suspected terrorists. She then went to the next and on and on until she had looked at all the packs.

“we need to find that last guy. It looks like he has the detonation equipment and a quantity of material but these guys were not going for some 6 kiloton range it was more like 40 kiloton. Each one of these guys is carry material and the it was probably so that each could go their own way if needed and the one guy could fire it off even it was small with each terrorists that showed up it was that much of a larger nuclear blast.” She explained

“Oh my God.” Major Leland cursed just before he started yelling orders. “I want that other body found now. You two head about a mile downriver and search. I want to know about any signs. Island team light up the shore and see what you can see. Make sure he did not get back your way. Everyone else 5 meter spread check the shore.”

    Chapt 51 part 2

All the technicians and support staff appeared and began searching the shoreline for any sign the man was able to make it out and walk up the shore and into the underbrush. Dino was using the night vision to scour as much of the water as he could hoping that he would spot some kind of signature. Nothing showed. It was possible with the weight and everything he got into a deeper channel and drowned but Dino did not feel that was the case. Did he actually see this man shot? He replayed the scene over and over. He could have been hit and then fell over the edge out of the bed of the truck but maybe he did not fall so much as slip over the edge. If he was the man with the detonation equipment, all the hardware and one container of material then he could do the job alone and he had let him slip away. Dammit! He knew it was not his fault that the Major would never blame him but if this man slipped past and got to a major city he would blame himself. Since they had been hit at the border he might just try and get to a large city and blow the thing. A terrible thought crossed his mind. What if he had went over the side and then around the back of the truck. He could have crawled along on his knees barely keeping his face above the water but moved against the current up stream. Dino turned the scoped rifle upstream and started to scan the shoreline. He scanned inland maybe 15 yards and looked throughout the brush cover. He thought he could see a glimpse of a figure in the dense cover. He reached back into the the gun case and fumbled around looking for the hand held thermal scope he carried as a backup. The FLIR scout was a small monocular that was just what he needed right now. He found the case and opened it grabbing the small device and holding it to his eye. He could see the heat signature and he found his man. He was right on him with the night vision but he was behind a log and some kind of heavy cover but that cover was cool and he was hot and now he was no longer hidden.

“Major I have a visual he is …

The loud explosion rocked him back and away from the 50 cal Barrett. He scurried back and looked through the scope back across the river and could see two hummers directly across the water and one further back.

“Incoming” he screamed on the communication set and then curled up. The first round came close to his location on the hill the second was down where more of the men were. “We have three hostiles across the river and they appear to be firing RPG. I am engaging. Our Target is 15 yards past me in the brush cover upstream. Did you copy that Major? Upstream.”

“copied, engage the targets I will get air support.” Major Leland replied. He looked over and saw the Ranger and Doctor Wise about 10 yards away. “we need those birds now Ranger. Also our last target is about 20 yards north in some thing brush. Can you and the doctor find him and take care of that last problem?”

The Ranger nodded and pulled Dr. Wise towards the hill and around the backside of it. As they walked he called the Apache pilot and asked for support. The pilot answered on the hand-held.

“air one this is Ranger Crockett, you have been tasked with support of this operation and my orders are to be taken as command order.”

“Yes Sir” That about covers it.

“Excellent well them boys we need support and I am authorizing you to use any and all means to support and defend that team from any enemy shooting at them no matter where that fire comes from. Lets make it clear I do not give a damn what side of the river they are on if they are shooting at our men light them up.” The Ranger stated.

    “That Sir we can do.”

The ranger and the doctor walked upstream away from the firefight. They quietly made their way past the hill and then moved slowly forward. A loud report from behind and the Ranger knew that the 50 had launched a round.

Dino took aim and let the round fly. He targeted the hummer in the rear. It seemed to be the one launching the RPG there way. He saw sparks fly from the hit and fired again and again. He could see flames from under the hood and turned his attention to the other two hummers. He saw the flash before he heard the explosion of a 50 caliber being shot from the other shore near one of the hummers. It exploded a tree behind him but they had him in their sights. He grabbed the Barrett and rolled over to his right and down the side of the hill. He had two 5 round magazines as he rolled and ended up in a dense clump of brush. Another round struck the top of the hill right where he had been. He was hoping they were not using night vision if that were the case they saw his flash and went for him and now did not know if he was dead or not. He pulled the legs from under the rifle and laid it across a large branch. He pulled a small clump of cedar back and snapped the branch so he could get a clear sight. They were just were he had last seen them when they tried to kill him but now he was aiming directly across towards the team members. Dino lay still in the sandy soil. He controlled his breathing as he laid the cross-hairs on the other snipers head. You will not be taking any of my team out he thought as he started his breathing cycle. He took a breath and breathed out and then another breath and an exhale. He took a final breath and could feel his heart slow as he held his breath and squeezed the trigger. The big rifle bucked and the munition was away. The shooters head exploded the men around him jumped and tried to hide but the first round was followed with 4 more each striking a human target. The team from the other hummer sprayed 50 or so rounds of 30 caliber machine gun ammunition but had no idea where the shot had come from and then fired back towards the Major. The two Apache came over a small rise about that time each pointing towards the two hummers that were still in play and began to fire their 30 mm Gatling guns. It was a truly awesome sight to see the tracer rounds slam over and over into the metal. The hummers were now officially stopped. The Apaches hovered for a few seconds and then disappeared again.

    “Dino good shooting.”

“Thanks Major did we take any casualties.” Dino asked impatiently.

“Nope! Just some scratches. You did good.”

“Thank you Sir, now get out there and help the Ranger find that last guy.”

“am on my way” The young man said as he jumped to his feet and headed to the waters edge. He had the the thermal scope shoved down in his pocket but now he had lost where he had seen the man at. He was at the waters edge and pulled the scope up and began searching the brush. He found the Ranger and the Doctor but nothing yet on the terrorist. He could not have gotten so far away that he would not see him with the scope that was just not possible. Something small he just passed over it. It had some heat to it but it was cooling down. It was not a man though he could make that out. It was a …. SHIT.

He had waded in the water to cool his heat signature. They had trained him in the desert of Afghanistan and showed him many ways to fool the technology of the west. This one came alone and if he could get past him he could recover the device and still kill tens of thousands. He stayed still as he watched the young man search for him with the hand held scope. Soon he would see the pack that he had hidden but by they he would be dead.

The terrorists came out of the water as quietly as he could but Dino already knew he was behind him when he saw the pack. He had dropped it to be faster and quieter. He heard the splash of the water as he turned to see the blade coming for his kidneys. He pushed at the blade with the scope and deflected it some but it still sliced into his side before he pulled back and away from the attack. Damn he thought this wannabe terrorists had got him by surprise. The cut was deep but he doubted it was fatal. He moved to protect that side and held his open hands in a fighting stance. He preferred it to any of the other closed fist stances he knew. His right hand and foot forward as he protected the left side that had already been injured. The attacker had hoped for a clean cut into the kidney and then a slice across the neck but this man was fast and he maneuvered out of the way before he could get a clean pierce. The terrorists held the knife out and thrust it forward once and then twice. Whoever had taught him was not very good but even bad knife fighters killed people he reminded himself. The third thrust was caught with a right open handed block and a quick left palm strike to the nose smashing it and sending blood flying. The terrorists stumbled back and snorted blood as he tried to breath. He came back again and instead of trying to pierce him he slashed across the front of his body. Dino stepped back and then landed a back-fist to the right side of the face. He reached down and could feel blood drooling down his side. This could not go on much longer. He was loosing blood and that was a danger even if this man was not much of one. The next slice came from the left and Dino blocked it and swung a furious ridge hand across the neck knocking the attacker down onto his back the blade dropping into the dark water. Dino went down to his knees feeling lightheaded suddenly. He tried to call for backup but as he reached for the communication unit his hand was pushed away. You may have beaten our brother but I will finish what he has started here and in stead of Los Angelas I think Houston will be a good place to set off the device. Dino could see the man standing over him with the gun pointed down as his head as he stepped on his right wrist. He could see the man squeeze the trigger.

The 45/70 bucket in the Rangers hands as he fired the jacketed hollow point towards the man standing over the downed guardsman. The round struck him in the right shoulder and spun him around the pistol firing and hitting off to the side of Dino's head. “Hang with us I have a paramedic on the way soldier.”

    “did we get the weapons?”

“We have all the material and the control box. We stopped them.” Dr. Wise said as she held his hand.

Dino closed his eyes and went in and out of consciousness as the paramedics started an IV and then he was sent by helicopter to a trauma unit in San Antonio.

    Chap 52

Do not hey real attached to the way this chap is. I worked on it a few days and not sure I like it.

Thanks for all the well wishes but I missed the test by about 5 questions. Much more cardiac questions then I was ready for.

    Chapter 52

Ranger Crockett had called the governors office with a detailed briefing of what the team had recovered. It went without saying the Governor was furious. The Ranger sat through a 2-minute tirade of profanity laced statements that made him crack a wry smile. When the Governor had calmed down enough to have a somewhat civil conversation, he tasked the ranger with getting all of the parts back to San Antonio immediately. He would take a chopper down there at first light. He asked if the Doctor had been able to determine if the equipment was functional.

Dr. Wise had been listening in over the speaker. “Yes this was all in working order. This was an imminent threat.” She said coolly.

“Right! I will meet you both in the morning, at the University. Good Job to you both and the team.” He said. “Oh! One more thing. I was informed one man was injured. What is his condition?” The Governor added.

“He was stat flighted to San Antonio regional trauma center. The paramedic was pretty sure he was going to make it.” The Ranger replied.

“That is good. Damn good work you two.” The Governor said, sounding like he was about to get off the phone and his mind had already switched to other thought paths.

“Sir I mean no disrespect. I feel I need to call the people who gave me this information and let them know what happened.” The ranger said. He did not want the Governor to feel he had dual loyalties but. “Without them sir. This would not have happened.”

The Governors attention snapped back to the current situation. He wanted to make a splash tomorrow about a nuke smuggled across the border. This administration in DC was dangerous and this might make people get off their collective asses and demand action. However, he had to acknowledge that whoever gave the ranger the information deserved an update. “Ranger your loyalty to the great state of Texas is without question. The people that you have worked with have done us a great service. Yes, contact them and let them know the outcome. Please forward my thanks but also let them know we plan to announce this early tomorrow morning if they could keep it under wraps until then.” He added in a sly tone. “I doubt they have much trouble keeping secrets. I have heard through some back channels of a firefight in Minnesota. Up near Bloomington. No one is sure what happened. Just a lot of dead men with AK’s. Be safe Ranger.” The line went dead.

Ranger Crockett smiled. Doctor Dawn Wise looked over to the ranger and studied his face. His face darkened by his time in the sun, a square jaw line and piercing eyes. She saw the smile spread across his face with the Governors last statement. His friends had been successful. She leaned in and without thinking kissed him on his stubbly cheek.

He was surprised for a moment. “What was that for?” He said cocking his head and flashing a boyish smile.

“I am just glad this all worked out, down here and up with your friends.” She said blushing that she had taken such an unnatural action for her. She looked deeply into his intense eyes. She turned away blushing a deeper shade of red.

The ranger smiled as the doctor walked towards the suburban. He turned, walked to the Major and updated him on the call to the Governor. The major had already had the team clearing any signs of their having been there. Well as much as they could in the sandy soil. He did not want to spend anymore time this near the border than needed. It was possible another backup team was on the way. It was hard to tell how much the Mexican government was involved or how much they would do for the terrorists. Once all of the leaders had reported clear, he called for them to grab all their gear and head to the vehicles. The members hurriedly grabbed anything that had come with and headed to the black SUV’s. The Ranger and Dr. Wise grabbed his police Suburban and started it up. She had secured her AR in the back but he slipped the 45/70 in between the seats.

“Are we expecting trouble?” She asked looking over at him as she buckled up.

“Nope! I just want to be able to reach out and touch somebody if needed.” He replied in an even tone. He looked over to her and smiled that smile again. She looked away from his eyes and out the window smiling.

The convoy pulled back out the same way they came in and hit the interstate. Ranger Crockett had called the Apaches and given then the orders to follow the convoy back to San Antonio. The helicopters were getting low on fuel so one stayed while the other headed back to refuel and follow the last part of the trip. There would be a short period without their support but they should be safe enough. The concern of safety was further diminished when the Apache pilot informed him that an A10 Warthog was in the air and would offer support if the need arose. He considered asking why the Texas Guard had an A10 but then figured there were some questions that you did not want to ask or maybe you just did not want the answer. They had been on the road about an hour and he reached down and pulled his cell phone out. He started to put it up to his ear but stopped. His truck was equipped with a Bluetooth setup and he could make the call and speak to JT hands free. He was also aware that it would be wrong to keep Dawn out of the conversation or at least on one side of it. She had done her job and all that he had asked. He dialed the number to JT’s cell phone and waited for him to answer.

JT and the other sat in the waiting room with several of Gael friends. He looked down at his watch. The surgery was just a little more then two hours in. A pretty nurse had come out thirty minutes or so ago and given them an update. They had stopped all the bleeding and were checking to make sure nothing else had been nicked and then cleaning the wound and sewing him up. JT sat several seats away from the others. Trevor had noticed as well and Jeanie. Tim sat in a chair across from JT but down a few seats. It was obvious he had something on his mind. They were all worried about what was happening down at the border and hoped they would get word soon but it seemed there was something more. He had not said a lot since they left the mosque and now he was sitting and twirling the USB memory stick in his fingers. He was looking down at the floor and absentmindedly spinning the small black rectangle with his fingers. Jeanie and her dad went from talking to each other to chatting with associates or friends of Gael that were sitting in the waiting area. She or her dad would look over to JT every now and then and back to each other. She worried he might not be taking all this killing very well. She had said something to her dad when JT had stretched and rather then, sitting back with the group had found a seat down away from everyone. Her father and Tim trained to be able to kill people. Even her childhood with her dad and the work he did, she knew about killing. JT was thrust into this and she worried what affect it could have on him. While Jeanie was sitting watching, worrying about JT the doctor walked in the waiting area. They all crowed around as he gave them the excellent prognosis. He explained they had stopped all the bleeding and were able to stitch up a small bowel laceration, which had thankfully not allowed any contents to spill into the body cavity. He was very hopeful and with good future thought the young man would be home in a few days, maybe one or two more. Jeanie and her dad hugged and everyone reached to shake the doctor’s hand, which ended with him shaking everyone’s hand. The group was slapping each other on the back and hugging. A phone rang. JT walked away from the group, apologizing to the doctor but explaining it was very important.

“Doctor, when can we go in and see him.” Jeanie asked quietly. She wanted to see if she could catch anything said by JT. She did not want the doctor there any longer then needed. She knew this call could be something best left not heard by anyone outside their band of associates.

“It will be an hour or so. He will be very groggy through the night but you all can go in two at a time, then let him get some rest please.” He answered back.

“I think his brother planned on staying tonight, in the room and then I will be back tomorrow, for awhile.” Jeanie responded. Making sure, the doctor understood this was not a subject for discussion. There had been few questions of how this happened once they said something about a car explosion. Jeanie was sure they had called the police. She wondered what her father’s friend had told them about the whole mess. As little as possible was her guess. She shook the doctor’s hand once more before he was dismissed with a head nod of thanks.

“Ranger it is nice to hear from you. I hope you had quiet night.” JT said quietly as he walked from the crowd. He filled the ranger in on Gaels condition and the prognosis from the doctor. JT was sure that Ranger Crockett could tell that right now he could not go into a great deal of details. He continued with the general topics until her heard Jeanie letting the doctor know that someone would be staying with Gael. He turned and saw the doctor walking out the door. “Ok. What did you find?” JT asked in an excited tone, completely different from the moment before.

“Hold on there, what happened to Gael and was that other true that he is going to be alright.” The Ranger shot back quickly.

“Yeah. Sorry Ranger.” JT said. He quickly went over what had happened at the house and then the mosque. He explained what had happened to Gael with the bomb on the car and the explosion meant as a last ditch effort to get them.

The ranger was silent as he listened to the events of the day and said a silent prayer of thanks. When JT had finished he knew that JT was waiting to hear what happened.

JT had a group formed around him now and switched the phone to speaker mode. “Ranger go ahead. I have you on speaker phone.”

Ranger Crockett had wondered about the silence and had used the time to try to contemplate where to begin. “JT first of all the Governor would like me to relay his thanks. I wish I could say we did not find anything but that is not the case. We found the men and they were carrying a device. Since we are on open airways, I would prefer not to add to many details. Suffice it to say you saved a city.” He could hear the swift intake of air. The Ranger went on to explain the operation. One of their men had been injured but was expected to recover. He went over the call to the Governor and the plans for tomorrow. “JT he asked if you guys could wait to make any statement until after the announcement early tomorrow.” The Ranger explained.

JT thought for a few moments all the while spinning USB stick in his right hand. Jeanie began to say some thing but JT spoke up. “Ranger I have no intention of making any statements to anyone. There will be some press tomorrow about the IDG and the liaisons within the FBI but nothing about any of this. I am going to make some calls and hope that tomorrow night we can cut off the body of this evil that has invaded our homeland. I will handle the head the next day. I fear that if things do not go our way we may all need to ask for asylum in Texas.” Everyone one on both ends of the phone call laughed. JT went about thanking the Ranger and wishing him a safe trip back to San Antonio. Jeanie was watching his hand with the USB stick it was almost as if he were thinking. The call was ending. His hand was rolling the stick repeatedly, faster. It was like some modern day worry stone. It fascinated her but she had no idea what JT was trying to work out. “Ranger there is one more thing before you go.” JT said his voice sounding far away, like he was working on a solution while trying to explain the problem.

A minute or so of silence passed. “Sure JT. What can I do?”

“Nothing you can do but something you need to know. I will go and see the President tomorrow if I can. I am going to give him all the information about the IDG and the Attorney General. I am going to give him a chance before we release it at noon to know what is coming out. He will be in Lexington for a fun raiser. I am going to ask agent Dawes if he can use his clout and get me a very private meeting.” JT explained.

Stunned silence from both ends of the phone.
“I have only just decided this. It will come as a shock to the people surrounding me as much as to you my friend. I hope if he chooses he will resign before those two fools can have their day at the UN. While he is still the President, they still have some legitimacy.” JT explained.

“JT I am not sure he will consider that.” The ranger replied.

“I know but I feel we need to give him that option.” He said slowly. “Be well my friend. I will try to contact you after my visit to the Imam in two days. Good luck.”

“You also. JT be careful with that snake even the head without the body is still deadly.” The Ranger said before he hung of the phone. The ranger and the doctor road in silence for many miles before he spoke up, he thanked her for the help and said he did owe her that dinner. They drove on to San Antonio and placed the cases in a secure environment. They chose to stash the cases and gear in one of the physics department laboratories, posting guards around the building as well outside the door to the physics lab. Since one of the dorms was currently unoccupied the rest of the team sacked out in the dorm rooms. Doctor Wise considered going home, since it was close but after talking to Ranger Crockett for two more hours, catching up on his life and hers she decided to grab one of the rooms.

JT hung up the phone and looked around to the group. He was sure they were all somewhat concerned about his plan to see the President. He was also sure they were worried maybe he had gone crazy. He had to explain his reasoning. This was the best course and he had to make them see that. If the President tried to stay in office and the UN attempted to send troops into the United States it would be a catastrophe. It could very well tip the scale and send the world into war. If the President went along with troops many in the armed forces would not follow his orders. It would start looking like the two traitors were correct. He hoped the President could see that. Even if he wanted to remake the US, he could not hope to do so in a world war.

“JT I am not sure even Harold has the connections to get you into see the President.” Tim said sounding concerned by this whole line of thought.

“JT are you sure this is the right way to go?” Jeanie asked.

“Ok guys I know this is out of the blue but we have to get the President to see this for what it is. If he stays in office and those to go before the UN and state their case, what happens then? If the UN votes to send troops in what happens? Can we be sure all the countries will vote with us? We made this problem for ourselves to some extent when we did the preemptive strikes. Trevor you tell me what happens if they want boots on the ground? If the President went along with it would the military back him or disobey his orders to support the UN. We have terrorism now, if that happens we have war on our shores. I know it sounds crazy but this is the best I have to offer. I will give him the memory stick and tell him what we have found and leave it up to him. If he stays and joins the Attorney General and Director Sieve then he is now the enemy.” JT said, explaining his reasoning as best he could.

Gael’s people had mostly wondered away during the phone call, Leslie had made it upstairs a minute or so after the Doctor left and she stood next to Trevor, who had his arm around her waist and Jeanie. Tim stood a few steps beside the trio and across from JT. The foursome was quiet. Their heads were tilted down and they were considering JT’s statements. He could sense the concern and worry in their expressions.

Trevor was the first to speak. “I know it sounds crazy but you might be right. If the President goes along it is a serous FUBAR situation. The armed forces will never go for boots on the ground without them being American boots. I just do not know if he would see you.” He said shaking his head from side to side.

“I can call Harold and see what he thinks he can do.” Tim stated. “I am just not sure.”

Jeanie stood silent. He dark eyes conveying the concern she had for the path they were considering.

JT stood before his friends, looked to each of them, and then settled looking at Tim. “I think it may be best for a two pronged approach. You told me about the lawyer Millie Franks and that she was a hold over from the last administration. She might be giving him advice. I am going to call the white house switchboard. If you will please call Harold and ask if he can try and get a word with the President, we will have done all we can.”

Tim nodded and stepped away from the group.

“You of course have already considered he may try and use this against you.” Jeanie finally stated.

“Yeah I have thought about that. If we do not give him the stuff that Dan has dug up as well as the FBI stuff I do not want to feel we left something out that could have changed his mind.” JT replied.

She nodded in response. She knew he was right but this was a dangerous path. The President had broken ranks with the people that put him in office. He could very well be a target himself. She looked back towards JT and listened as her Dad and JT made plans to head back to the plane and back to Louisville. Her dad was going to take them back as soon as Tim was off the phone. JT would make the call to the Whitehouse on the way to the plane. Trevor wanted to get back and make sure Gael was all right and then get Leslie home. Tim approached the group and went over the conversation he just finished with Harold. Tim explained what they needed and Harold said he would make some calls and see if he had some direct links. He said that Millie Franks was a good shot. He had met her a few times and she seemed to be a straight shooter. He did warn she was a professional to her last bone. If she were offering support to the President she would do all she could but would also have a hard line that she would not cross.
JT and Tim began saying their goodbyes and shaking hands. JT and Jeanie hugged a long and warm hug he thought. He felt somewhat guilty when they parted. The trio of men walked down to the Hummer and drove back to the plane. The pilot was still up talking and drinking. He came out to greet them and then walked to the plane to begin preparations for flying home. Nothing was said about the night activities. The plane taxied down the runway leaving the ground and into the dark night skies.

I think you must have been playing chess before writing this neat little twist. Keep up that twisted thinking.

    Chapter 53

Millie Franks sat in one of the large conference rooms on the main floor of the White House. She had been reading over law briefs and Supreme Court Proceedings looking for anything to use against the Attorney General and the FBI director. She knew there were no cases before she even opened the first book but she had to try and find something. Ever since she helped format the response to the resignation refusals she had been working a great deal with the President. It was odd, two people with such different views working together. She did believe that he did not want all of this turmoil. He seemed genuinely concerned and troubled with the direction that his appointees had taken. She pushed the book away from her and gently pulled her glasses from her face, laying them down on the open pages. Her hands rubbed her face and eyes, and then massaged her temples. She looked at her watch. Six am had been a long time ago she thought before looking up at the television screen. There had been some news about something up in Minnesota and then down at the border. She knew from the hushed whispers that it was big. The President had not been disturbed but there had been talk. It was so funny to have them stop speaking as she walked by to get a glass of water. She smiled. It was as if she were some kind of infiltrator or saboteur. She stretched her arms about her shoulders and could feel the snaps and cracks of her tired body. It was late and she was going to go to her home and get some rest. At least if she made it home in an hour she would get a few hours rest. She began to push herself back from the table. Just then a pretty young aide walked in. “Mrs. Franks?”

“Yes that is me.” She answered.

“I have a phone call for you mam. They said it was important.”

They were still answering the phone at this time of the morning. Something must be really wrong, she thought. “Did they say who it is?”

“He said his name was Jerome Tanner.”

Millie thought back and tried to find this name in her memory. Was this some official? She did not recognize it. It did have some familiarity but she could not place from where.

The aide stood quiet for some time as she watched the attorney search for a memory. “Mam, he is the gentleman from Kentucky, the terrorist and the mall.”

She looked ahead and took a moment to think back when the attacks had first started. The attacks on the malls had frightened everyone and the lone bright spot, one man fought back. Her face revealed the dawning signs of understanding for brief seconds. Then her brow furrowed. What would this man be doing calling the White House? With all that had gone on tonight, could he be involved? How did he get her name? She looked back towards the aide; none of these questions would be answered by staring into the young woman’s face. “Can you please put him through to this phone?”

    “Yes Mrs. Franks”

The young aide walked away as Millie pulled the phone closer to her. She was startled when it rang as she moved it almost knocking the receiver onto the ground as she tried not to look foolish.

“Yes. This is Millie Franks. How may I help you?” She had a million other questions but decided to play it cool and let Mr. Tanner determine the conversations tone and path.

“Mrs. Franks, my name is Jerome Tanner. I hope this does not catch you to late but I have just arrived back home from a needed flight to Minnesota.” He said calmly into the phone.

The right side of her mouth turned upwards into a sly grin. This man was interesting. He had to know she would have heard something about Minnesota and he was letting her know he had something to do with it. “I am glad you made it back safely. I hope it was nothing too serious. Oh, and no it is no trouble to take the call at this time. I was just looking over some old cases.”

“Excellent! I am afraid it was important mission but it came out alright.” JT said picking his words carefully. “We landed a while back. Agent Tim Smith was kind enough to give me the number to call and we hoped you might be there to speak with.”

“Really; I remember Agent Smith and his friend Agent Dawes. I must say I am curious why you would want to call me though.” She said.

“I will be very honest Mrs. Franks. I am hoping that you can convince the President to speak with me before or after his noontime speech tomorrow.” JT held a steady tone. He did not want to give any indication as to how much he wanted this to happen.

    “Mr. Tanner…”

    “JT please”

“Alright then JT, you must know that any visitors for the President must be vetted long before any meeting, besides I am not sure what you and the president would have to talk about.” She said coldly.

She was not going to jump into this either. She had questions but she was letting him set the tone. “Mrs. Franks…”

    “Mille Please”

“Millie it is then. Millie I have files and reports about the Attorney General. These files show long-standing relationships with very bad people. Some of these files will be made public tomorrow. These include information on this group within the FBI. I have a feeling you have already been informed or at least briefed on a news conference that will be happing in Texas early tomorrow. I must ask the President to consider resigning. If he not he puts the United States in great peril. If the UN votes to send in troops this will become a world war in a heartbeat and no good can come of that. ” There he had said it. He waited listening to the silence.

Millie Franks was stunned. Some heavy equipment operator from Louisville was going to ask the President to resign. What audacity. Whatever she thought about this discussion she knew he had figured it out. If the Attorney General and the FBI director were able to get the UN on board and convince them that the US was in the throes of some kind of rebellion and they voted for troops on the ground there would be no turning back. “I see. JT I am not sure you understand that we are trying to work something out to stop these attacks and get the Attorney General and Director Sieve under control. I doubt the President would consider your proposal unless it was absolutely the last resort.”

“Millie I do understand but time is shorter then you think. I feel assured that after the new conference tomorrow from Texas the President will feel the same sense of urgency. Please let the President know of my request to meet. It was a pleasure speaking with you.” He explained feeling suddenly drained.

“It was a pleasure JT. I will relay your message.” Mille said.

“I hope to hear from you tomorrow. By the way I think if you contact Agent Dawes he would be willing to chaperone the visit.” JT said with a hint of amusement.

“We shall see. Take care JT.” She said as he hung up the phone.

JT held the phone for a few second before closing it and laying it on his desk. Tim had lain down on the couch in the living room after he and JT had talked about the call to the White House. JT had decided to wait until he was back home to avoid any dropped calls or such. It was already back enough that he was calling the White House and then to have dropped calls. He laughed. He bowed his head into his hands and rubbed his temples. Jeanie had sent him a text and said Gael was doing better. He had gotten out of recovery and she was filling him in on the happenings out west. She sent another text that was password protected. He had figured it out as being the same numbers that she had used before. It was a list of the phone numbers for the men he needed to speak with. He would wait several hours before making those calls maybe even after the Texas announcement. Once they knew what had been interdicted on the border it might add to their determination. He felt tired. The adrenaline that had helped him through the evening was now a distant memory now there was pain and doubt. He reached down and rubbed his injured leg. As he pushed down on the jean material came in contact with the bandage it became wet. A small stain of blood began to form. He shook his head as he cursed under his breath. JT turned in the chair from the bank of monitors and screens and pulled the lever to raise the footrest. He should have gone upstairs to his bed with his wife. She had come down to make sure everything was all right when they had arrived. The kids had still been in the living room before he had sent them up to bed. He was sure he had heard the squeak of boards a while later and knew that Nora had snuck back down. He doubted she would risk being caught in the middle of something but after all that had happened maybe she needed someone to hold her. He relaxed into the soft material. He reached over, grabbed his cell phone, and checked that the alarm was still set for seven am. After he was sure for the third time, he laid the phone in his lap and drifted off to sleep. He dreamed of his boyhood in the country.

Agent Smith had listened as JT went downstairs and made the call to the White House. He was still unsure how this was going to help or even if it was, suppose to help. Maybe JT just thought it was the right thing to do. Maybe it was. He lay on the couch looking up to the ceiling thinking back over all that had happened to day. He was so far outside the bounds of normal. He laughed to himself as he turned towards the front windows and closed his eyes. He drifted to sleep. A soft hand over his mouth startled him. It was all he could do to stay silent as he looked up into Nora’s eyes. She placed a finger to her lips and he fell quiet as she lay down next to him. He could feel the warmth of her body and the swell of her breasts. He was worried this would not be a position he would want JT to see them in. He had to make sure this did not go any further. Nora sensed him tense and she reached up with her lips and kissing him softly and snuggled down into his arms. Tim made no sound and relaxed with the soft kiss. Their bodies entwined as they drifted off to sleep.

Jeanie sat by the hospital bed. He father and Leslie were out in the waiting area. They had huddled in a corner and looked to be asleep the last time she checked on them. She was tired and sore but had wanted to stay awhile longer to see if Gael would wake again. The drugs were still keeping him groggy but he had woken enough to speak and see his friends. She laid her head down on the hospital bed near Gael’s hand. He mind drifted to her mother as she fell into the darkness. She could make out her beautiful face and feel her arms around her again. A tear ran down her cheek. Gael opened his eyes slightly and moved his hand to lay it gently on her head before falling back to sleep.

Harold Dawes had made calls to his father and a couple of uncles. They would make inquiries on his behalf to Millie Franks. They made it clear that did not want to know more. His father had spoken to him at length. It was the first time in a while they had spent more then a minute or two on the phone together. His father warned him that he was putting himself in danger. Maybe even danger his family name would not guarantee his safety. These were bad people and they would do anything necessary to keep their secrets. He answered his father concerns with an assurance that he was being careful. He was sure that his father knew better but he said it anyway. The talked for a while longer his fathers voice sounding different or maybe not different maybe exactly the same but from a time long ago when it was his duty to protect his son. Harold knew he was worried. As Harold said his goodbyes, his father’s voice broke for a moment and then he recovered.

“I am very proud of you boy, you know that. I know this is important maybe more important that anything for a very long time. I hope God sees you and your friends through this safely.” He heard the words from his father and he choked up. The line went dead. He walked back to the couch and bent forward to grab the glass of bourbon. He swirled the glass around spinning the lone ice cube in the rich brown liquid.

“From your lips to Gods ears dad.” He drank down the last of the liquid. He could feel the heat and it ran down his throat. He grabbed the remote and un-muted the television. He laid his head back on the cushions and feel asleep.
