KIEV, December 9 (RIA Novosti) - The mutation of the bird flu virus discovered in the Crimea, an autonomy on the Black Sea, is unlike any other that has been found in the world and is extremely dangerous for humans, Ukraine's ICTV channel reported Friday.

The TV channel said 7,000 birds suspected of the virus had been culled over the past 24 hours.

The final word on the type of virus strain will be announced after the test results are received from Europe.

The Ukrainian leadership recently imposed a state of emergency in the Crimea. Poultry imports from the area have been banned and mass vaccinations of the population are under way.

KIEV, December 10 (RIA Novosti, Vladimir Suprun) - A bird flu outbreak has been recorded in 19 settlements in the Crimea, an autonomy on the Black Sea, Ukrainian TV channel NTN reported Saturday. The TV channel said 40,000 birds suspected of being infected with the virus had been killed in 17 villages.

The Ukrainian Emergency Situations Ministry said the situation in the areas where the virus had been discovered was under control.

Friday, Ukraine's ICTV channel reported the mutation of the bird flu virus discovered in the Crimea was unlike any other that had been found in the world and was extremely dangerous for humans.

Dr. N - when they say mass vaccinations of the population, do they mean the poultry pop or the human pop? (I hate it when they write like this!) If it's the human pop what are they vaccinating with? If it's the poultry pop, have you heard whether these mass vaccinations have been beneficial in any way? I just can't see that it would be since you're looking at BILLIONS of birds. I think they're full of it personally, but I live here, so am entirely moronic you see. Thanks!

Last week there was write up about China vaccinating their birds against avian flu..I will go see if I can find it..also the news report showed the men going around door to door and house to house..wearing no gloves no protection whats o ever and they where going vaccinate millions of birds..brb here,s to hoping I find the stories...
I have tried google and looked, but cannot find the artical, but I will keep my eyes opened and see if I can come across it again

Dr. N - when they say mass vaccinations of the population, do they mean the poultry pop or the human pop? (I hate it when they write like this!) If it's the human pop what are they vaccinating with? Most countries, including the US and EU do NOT vaccinate poultry (and will not import poultry from countries that no vaccinate against bird flu). Therefore, few countries vaccinate birds other than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Most countries do however vaccinate exposed humans against seasonal flu (the same vaccine that is available worldwide. This is a trivalent vaccine made against 3 human virus (H3N2, H1N1, and influenza B). Those exposed to bird flu are vaccinated so they don't get dually infected with bird and human flu. which could lead to reasssortment or recombination and make the bird flu more efficient at infecting humans.
