That shelter is like ferro cement with burlap instead of chicken wire. Wonder how long it took to build.

This is an interesting resource, particularly since they have the graphics included along with the article text.

I've got virtually the complete file of MEN from issue #1 up through 100 plus something, but it's nice to be able to find at least some of them on the web too.

since no one knows how long a site like this could be on the net, it would be most useful to have the site right on our computers, right? i mean, this site is INVALUABLE!

using a program called teleport pro ($39.95), one can make a browsable copy of an entire site on your machine, with all directories, subdirectories, etc. this program is positively awesome.

a trial version is available that will permit up to 500 files to be d/l before it stops. after one registers, one can 'come back' and d/l the rest later.

Thanks for the link. I guess not enough people were around back in the 1970's and the "back to the land" movement. Time to heat up the old printer.

The old issues of TMEN are the best! Every now and then I will purchase a current issue. If they ever get back to the basics I may consider a subscription again. I subscribe to Countryside which is a lot like what TMEN used to be.

Organic Gardening is almost usless now. Does anyone know of a good gardening mag that has a lot of practical, useful info. OG is mostly ads and their articles tend to be very simplistic. :)

It was good. About 10 years ago it went mainstream and all of the articles went to pot.

I guess it started when they tooks the ads for the gas power equipment.

The original authors must have been rolling in their graves.

I used Black Widow (similar to Teleport Pro) to suck them all down. (Uses multiple threading, 32 I think, at the same time).

It makes it easier to "browse" if it is on your hard drive.

Of course some are just fluff, so only the prep and homestead ones will be printed and put in a binder.

I will put them all of CD-Rom for my personal use and refer to it using my notebook computer and solar panel i I need to. :)

Well, I got lost there for a couple of hours! Tried to find the issue where the plans for my solar house came from. Unsuccessfull. :( Must be one of the missing issues.

I had every copy from #1 up til 1985. When I went on the road, I left them with my Dad for safekeeping. He gave them away. He came very close to not being forgiven for that..very close. But then I realized that getting old don't usually get us less stupid, we just get better at it. :lol:

This find is surely a gift. Thanx again.

...finally suspended the Webdown at 4AM..resumed now for the last of the graphics parts. hehe..TMEN's bandwidth sucks this morning.

My father used to be an Editor for MEN. He and Mort supposedly wrote the only useful material in the magazine before it got bought out. (or so he says, anyway :D)

Gee, A.T., and I thought I was the only person with a whole set of TMEN complete & up to the Index. I quit buying (because of content) toward the end where they made the actual index. Had to fill in missing issues, but GOT EM ALL.

Glad to see the site has em too tho.

Potemkin, do you have a link to Black Widow or Teleport Pro? Just curious & I have started searching for info, but haven't had luck yet. I'd appreciate it.

Great site! I, too, have all the old issues of MEN until shortly after it went yuppie. Now I buy an issue at BAM if it has something interesting in it. The last issue had a letter and picture of a friend of mine in it.

We even went to the MEN's Eco-Village on vacation back in '84. It was a great experience!

It took me years to put my collection together. I don't recall where I stopped with it, but it was sometime in the mid-eighties as I recall when they really started going downhill. When the Shuttleworths sold out the soul of the magazine went out of it.

Never agreed with all of their politics, but they most always had good stuff.

Well, I just checked the "stacks" and we're good from issue 1 through 83 (1983) when we too gave up over the yuppieness.

What's interesting is that I just refered to MEN on my "wood gas" thread: wood gas

FWIW: SiteSnager is a free app from PC Magazine. No adware or trackers. See it here.

It's pretty basic compared to the $30 apps, but will do the job for sites like TMEN's index. Allows # level of links to snag (2 in this case), whether to include graphics, and whether to follow offsite links (usually ads). Can convert the download for local browsing or leave intact for users archiving websites. Does not work for sites that use jscripts or CGI for link navigation. It just ignores scripts.

BTW, if ya choose not to snag the graphics, you can reduce the download/save size of your TMEN local archive by around 80%. Most of that 200mb+ size is graphics, and IMO, are not necessary for most of the articles. You could go back later and DL just those needed (like charts and diagrams) and put 'em in the archive folders manually if ya want.

Kind of like the Foxfire series. Excellent books but got wacked about issue 6-8.

Initial ones were talking to old people how to build things like cabins, wagon wheels, washing clothes in a pot, making applesauce, etc.

After that, weired things like ghosts, boogar men, and other cr@p.

Still have my favorite issues of MEN from the 70's.
Seeing the post conjured images of burned-out fat wrinkled hippies soaking in a hot tub made from a cement septic tank with a wood-fired water heater that used to be a 50 gallon drum, in a sheet plastic atrium full of Mexican closet tomato plants, scabbed on to a metal skin single-wide. :D

Whoo-hooo! I discovered that Adobe Acrobat will download stuff just like the other programs can. You can pick what to save it as and it catagorizes the thing and everything! It took 14 hours to get it(Mother Earth News Site) with a modem, about 15 minutes to saveas (remember to do this when Adobe is done or you may end up with something messed up) and 5 minutes to quit out of the blasted thing. That sucker is 263 MG. I was afraid it would blow up while I was doing the save but it didnt.
FYI: In full version Adobe Acrobat, go to File, open web page. type in the URL of what web page you want(have to be connected to internet) and pick or unpick what you want and voila'. I did discover that having headers and footers in was very messy looking and they are not needed. You might try it first on something small so you know what you will get when you have certains things picked or unpicked.
There were some errors which you get a list of at the very end of the download. some of their page links are not there or labeled wrong so the page wont come up.:eleph:

Can you imagine the number of people hitting the website? How many passed it along to friends or other boards.

How many used something like BlackWidow to suck it all down or home many just used the "right mouse click, save target as".

The CD-Rom burners were probably working overtime that one. Easy as it almost filled one CD-Rom.

Good rule of the web is "Grab it when you can". You never know when the site will go away or get shut down because of excessive bandwidth usage. (My guess this is why TMEN archives are gone.)
