ENER Britain gripped by Narnia-like weather spell

Oil in the Gulf Current may and probably will trigger a new Ice Age

Oceanographic satellite data now shows that the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico has stalled as a consequence of the BP oil spill disaster. This according to Dr. Gianluigi Zangari, an Italian theoretical physicist, and major complex and chaotic systems analyst at the Frascati National Laboratories in Italy.

Snow.jpg

This image, taken by NASA's Terra satellite, shows the extent of the blanket of snow currently covering the British Isles.

Snowfall for the month of November has been the heaviest and most widespread in the UK since 1993 and the deepest November snow since 1965. In Northumberland, up to 99 centimetres of snow were measured on high ground.

The snow has caused widespread travel disruption as trains, planes and automobiles have been delayed or stranded by unexpected weather.

An area of high pressure in the Atlantic is partly to blame preventing warm air from reaching the British Isles as cold air is being drawn down from Scandinavia. Temperatures reached -7°C in London and Birmingham, and plunged to -20.9°C at a Met Office weather station at Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands. Altnaharra is no stranger to cold temperatures, having recorded the lowest temperature in the UK on 30 December 1995: a bracing -27.2 °C.

"Normally, our winds come from the west keeping our winters relatively mild. However, during November we have seen a large area of high pressure develop in the Atlantic, causing a 'block' to the westerly winds that tend to keep us that little bit milder. As a result this has allowed very cold Arctic air to move south across mainland Europe," explains Met Office meteorologist Ewen McCallum on the Met office website.

What does that have to do with the oil spill and the Gulf current? They say the heaviest since 1993, so what are they blaming the 1993 snowfall on? No oil spill in the Gulf then.:shr:

Weather patterns disrupted because ocean currents are changed... it's a perfect storm scenario.

I can't help but think the BP spill so disrupted the "normal" patterns that a new ice age is upon us.

It wasn't that long ago that NY was once under a glacier nearly a mile high.

The Atlantic Conveyor, its the reason Britain & Ireland have such mild winters for the latitude,
because we live in the time of global warming obviously there has to be a reason for such normal seasons & weather patterns, we should all be out in our shorts & tshirts or under water because of global warming

Anyone know the link to the maps of the current gulf stream in the Atlantic? I've seen images but would like to see it in real time.

Then we can see if the gulf stream is still broken up, and hopefully catch a look at some pre-spill images.

almost ready, I was thinking maybe NOAA might have something? Looking around.

Just struck me regarding the mild hurricane season we've after such wicked ones over the last few years. Could that be the result of a shift in the Loop Current?

I live in those drumlands created by that glacier so believe me Mt4, I've had my eye on this mess. I worry about those north of me, aye!

RISK OF GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE BY BP OIL SPILL

Abstract: BP Oil Spill may cause an irreparable damage to the Gulf Stream global climate thermoregulation activity.

The Gulf Stream importance in the global climate thermoregulation processes is well assessed. The latest real time satellite (Jason, Topex/Poseidon, Geosat Follow-On, ERS-2, Envisat) data maps of May-June 2010 processed by CCAR1,2 (Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research), checked at Frascati Laboratories by the means of the SHT congruent calculus3 and compared with past years data, show for the first time a direct evidence of the rapid breaking of the Loop Current, a warm ocean current, crucial part of the Gulf Stream.

As displayed both by the sea surface velocity maps and the sea surface height maps, the Loop Current broke down for the first time around May 18th and generated a clock wise eddy, which is still active (see Fig. 1).

Figure 1| Real time satellites data maps. Real time sea surface height maps (above) and sea surface velocity maps (below) starting from april 22nd until June 9th processed by CCAR1,2 and checked at LNF (Frascati) by SHT calculus3. The star indicates the site of BP platform “Deepwater Horizon”. The yellow arrow indicates the breaking of the Loop Stream.

As of today the situation has deteriorated up to the point in which the eddy has detached itself completely from the main stream therefore destroying completely the Loop Current, as in figure 2 below, dated June 12th 2010.

Figure 2| Real time satellites data maps updated. Real time sea surface height map (left) and sea surface velocity maps (right) updated on June 12th processed by CCAR1,2 and checked at LNF (Frascati) by SHT calculus3. The star indicates the site of BP platform “Deepwater Horizon”. The yellow arrow indicates the breaking of the Loop Stream.
Since comparative analysis with past satellite data until may 2010 didn’t show relevant anomalies, it might be therefore plausible to correlate the breaking of the Loop Current with the biochemical and physical action of the BP Oil Spill on the Gulf Stream.

It is reasonable to foresee the threat that the breaking of a crucial warm stream as the Loop Current may generate a chain reaction of unpredictable critical phenomena and instabilities due to strong non linearities which may have serious consequences on the dynamics of the Gulf Stream thermo- regulation activity of the Global Climate.

It's not the oil spill in the Gulf that is responsible for the bad weather. It's the melting glaciers dumping fresh water into the ocean disrupting the under water conveyors. That is how the last ice age started.

well at the time of posting, here in the south east, the snow has melted.......expect it will return soon

famous last words.............

until recently winters in the UK have been milder than say 25 years ago, we are now returning to the weather we had in the 70s and before
