Should this be the unpasteurized honey? I've read that pasteurization destroys some of the essential vitamins/minerals. Thoughts on this, anyone?

This too shall pass.

I would think raw honey, definitely. I don't know why they even bother to pasteurize honey -- although part of the problem is simply that they heat the honey to aid in extraction, as cold honey doesn't flow well.

I'm very dubious, though, about people with diabetes taking very much honey -- it may be healthier than white sugar, but it's still very high in carbohydrates.

You definitely want raw honey that has not been heated above 106 F to extract from comb. Some big producers go above this to speed up extraction, but it's cheating. Overheating destroys beneficial enzymes added by the bees' digestive systems, which are essential to the action of the honey.

Does anyone have any idea if it would be better to try Cinnamon Oil for some of these suggestions, rather than powdered?

Vollyball Granny, if honey makes you sick then you should steer clear of it. You may have never developed the enzyme to deal with it.

(Also, no children under the age of 2 should ever be given honey for the same reason.)

Not enough information. No studies are cited. No references are given.

:lkick:

Honey and cinnamon are good for health, sure. But this little list is classic snake oil. Not one statement is backed by anything but hot air. And, remember, too much of anything will bite you.

I'll stay with ground and stick cinnamon.

Exactly why I checked Snopes - disclaimer in first paragraph. But if you don't have an allergy or inability to process honey, what do you have to lose?:spns:
And no, I really don't think I'm going to live to 100 on the basis of cinnamon and honey - but if it helps me make 99 in good health, what is the harm to that?

If your honey does not contain bee's knees and legs, it is not raw. Also the raw honey contains propolus. This is the waxy part of the hive. I used to buy raw for my personal use. There is nothing like it.

Now with all these cinnamon threads...I can't find enough foods to out it on. Lord we love our cinnamon.

Hint. I buy my cinnamon bulk. I purchase one half pound at a time. I order it from Starwest. It is so much cheaper. Those little spice bottles cost a fortune. You all have me hooked on this spice.

Please regard Snopes the same as you take www.theonoin.com as a source for real news.

Snopes is a clear disinformation tool. Most of the time the info is good and that leads to trust. When you search anything political at snopes you will trust the reply and that is the kicker.

To be a good disinforman source you need to have 95% accurate info to build trust and toss in 5% direct lies on the important things. Snopes has been caught with pure BS at times. That is the way the game is played.

Treat Snopes as you would a parlor game! I know the process and they are playing it well.

Take my advice as BS or gospel. For all you know I may be a disinformation agent.

Honey does have medicinal and antimicrobial properties. For (anti) allergy purposes, it is best to get local honey (containing your local pollens).

It's use in wound care has been re-discovered lately. Cited references are plentiful...... over the last 60 yrs or so..... (in spite of the usual lack of motivation to encourage natural/economical/effective products)

Here is one interesting article relating to wound care from Infection Control Today:

http://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/hotnews/antimicrobial-effect-medical-grade-honey.html

Honey in Topical Wound Care
07/22/2009
According to a recent paper published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiological Infectious Diseases, a certain kind of honey can be an effective agent in topical wound care, particularly where antibiotic resistance is an issue. The irony is that this most exciting new treatment has been around since the dawn of history—honey was first used as a first aid treatment 4,000 years ago in Egypt.

The paper, “The unusual antibacterial activity of medical-grade Leptospermum honey: antibacterial spectrum, resistance and transcriptome analysis,” describes the palliative effects of Leptospermum honey, a particular kind of honey indigenous to New Zealand and Australia. Leptospermum honey has been shown to possess unique plant derived components that make it an ideal wound dressing, including novel antimicrobial and immune-modulatory compounds. In addition, the honey has several properties that also aid in wound healing. Among these properties are the honey’s low pH levels, its ability to help remove non-vital tissue from the wound area, the stimulation of new tissue growth, and reported reduction in scarring and pain levels. What is also key is that all these benefits exist without any toxicity to healthy tissue. “There is an urgent need for new, effective agents in topical wound care,” the report begins, “and selected honeys show potential in this regard.”

The paper also describes how medical-grade honey might be a strong combatant against antibiotic resistant pathogens such as MRSA and vancomycin-resistant strains (VRS). “Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most commonly acquired pathogens in both the community and the hospital settings, and it is particularly problematic in skin and wound infections. The emergence of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and, more recently, vancomycin-resistant strains, has seriously compromised treatment options,” the report states. “Multi-drug resistance limits treatment options and results in the use of more expensive or more toxic drugs, with corresponding increases in patient morbidity and mortality. . . The current issues surrounding antibiotic resistance, and a growing body of evidence supporting the use of honey as a dressing for a wide range of wounds, has increased interest in its use in the clinic.”

MEDIHONEY dressings, a unique line of products containing active Leptospermum honey, provide a moist, occlusive environment conducive to optimal wound healing and contain a high percentage of honey, enabling them to work effectively in the presence of wound fluid, blood, and tissue, promoting an optimal healing environment. Available in dressings and gel form, MEDIHONEY products, leading brand of Princeton, New Jersey-based Derma Sciences Inc., are indicated for the management of lightly to heavily exuding wounds such as: Diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis leg ulcers, arterial leg ulcers, leg ulcers of mixed etiology, pressure ulcers (I-IV), first and second degree burns, donor sites, traumatic and surgical wounds.

The paper also shows that MEDIHONEY is effective against antibiotic resistant strains,” says Edward J. Quilty, chairman and CEO of Derma Sciences Inc. “Although this has been demonstrated before, this article does a great job of showing that not only is it effective against these strains, but that the same amount of MEDIHONEY is necessary for the non-resistant strains as is required for the resistant strains. This is unusual, as more antibiotic or antimicrobial is typically necessary for the antibiotic resistant strains.”

The paper also demonstrates that use of MEDIHONEY at sub-lethal levels (levels too low to kill bacteria) does not induce resistance. This is unusual because this is precisely what causes resistant strains to form after sub-lethal antibiotic / antimicrobial concentration exposure. Further, a gene expression analysis was undertaken to see if MEDIHONEY’s effect was different than that of traditional antibiotics. The conclusion was “when compared to the published data on the effects of various antibiotics on the gene expression of E. coli, active Leptospermum honey produced a unique expression signature, suggesting that it works by a different mode of action to the other inhibitors.”

The data presented here argue for a greater use of medicinal-grade honey in wound care, particularly where antibiotic resistance is an issue,” the paper concludes. “Our study suggests that it is unlikely that resistance to honey will develop, even with increased use. . . The gene expression signature of E. coli cells exposed to active Leptospermum honey indicates that it has a mode of action that is distinct from conventional antibiotics. Further investigations into the mode of action of the non-peroxide antibacterial activity of this honey are warranted, as these may lead to new classes of antimicrobials, which are desperately needed.”

I need some cinnamon bulk also. There is so many different types of cinnamon. Some I buy is soft and mild and others can be very strong and flavorful. I want some of the strong type.

Last I heard there were over 400 types from mild to very hot and spicy.

First let me say I have a very sensitive sniffer. Coffee breath is nasty to me. Big red gum tops it for me and smells like dirty butt. I like the smell of cinnamon but cannot stand big red gum. My wife drinks coffee and used to chew big red until my son and myself convinced her that we could not stand the smell of that gum. To each his own I guess. Big red is popular as well as coffee yet I like neither.

Discover the Incredible Use of Honey in Hibernation Diet

The recent revolutionary Hibernation Diet created by a British pharmacist and a nutrition expert caught my attention by making a powerful connection between poor sleep and obesity. It advocates incorporating mild resistance exercise and a healthy, balanced, and wholesome diet void of highly refined, processed foods such as white bread, pizza, burgers, chocolates, beer and sugar, and suggests taking a generous spoonful or two of honey at night, either as a warm drink, a smoothie or straight from the jar.

hibernation_honey.jpg
This fascinating honey hibernation diet promises to help us sleep and lose weight at the same time by using our biology and working with our bodies, rather than against them – “recovery biology”. A new approach to fat metabolism, it requires no straining from aerobics exercise, no wearing out on a treadmill and no pounding it out in the gym.
Sounds too easy, too miraculous or too far-fetched to be believable?

Natural honey when taken prior to bed is believed to be able to fuel the liver, speed up fat-burning metabolism, ease stress hormones and help us get a better night's sleep. This oldest natural sweetener also contains a wide variety of vitamins, including vitamins B6, B1, B2 and B5, and minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and zinc, anti-oxidants and amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.
This is what I learnt about the Hibernation Diet: due to its 1:1 ratio of fructose to glucose, honey is the most ideal food that can provide a fuelling mechanism for the body at night, keeping blood sugar levels balanced and letting your recovery hormones get on with burning fat stores. This proposition that honey reduces blood glucose level was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in April 2004. However, to most people, eating before bedtime, in this case eating sugars seems to defy common sense. Moreover, eating late at night is often discouraged by many people who believe that during bedtime, metabolic rate is low and the body cannot burn calories and would easily put on weight. Being a honey enthusiast, I naturally wanted to know more about how the hibernation diet works scientifically for the good of the body.
honeydropping.jpg
I read that when sugars are absorbed from the gut into the blood they are first absorbed by the liver, which is the only organ in the human body with the fructose enzyme to process this sugar. In the liver the fructose is converted into glucose, stored as liver glycogen or human starch, and released only if and when blood glucose falls.
Fructose also triggers the glucose enzyme in the liver allowing the liver to take in as much glucose as it requires. This has been referred to as the Fructose Paradox. In other words, fructose lowers the Glycemic Index of glucose; fructose enters the liver and opens the gate for glucose entry preventing a rapid rise in blood glucose. This natural blood glucose regulator found in fruits, vegetables and honey, regulate blood glucose levels and stabilize blood glucose to maintain a regular supply of glucose to the brain.

Some simple questions that the hibernation diet expert asks to check if the liver has fuelled up well for the night:

- Do you wake regularly during the night?
- Do you have night sweats?
- Do you experience acid reflux during the night?
- Do you get up to go to the bathroom during the night?
- Do you feel nauseous in the early morning?
- Do you wake up exhausted?
- Do you have a dry throat in the morning?
- Do you get night cramps?
- Do you feel weak in the early morning?
If “yes” is the answer for any of these questions, it could mean that instead of burning fat and repairing muscles, your body has produced a stream of stress hormones while you've slept.
The hibernation diet also goes on to explain how fructose in honey fuels the brain which is the most energy demanding organ, burning up to 20 times the fuel of any other cell in the body. We become exhausted after having to concentrate for a lengthy period. That’s why we often hear that mental exhaustion is worse than physical exhaustion. The brain needs glucose to survive, however glucose occupies a large amount of storage space and there is no room in the brain. And the liver is the only organ that can both store and release glucose into the circulation. This is why looking after your liver glycogen amount by ensuring that the liver and the brain are well provided for both in the day and at night is so critical. Any fall in blood glucose is detrimental for the brain. The adrenal glands to be activated and the adrenal hormones if overproduced can lead to conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, poor immune function, depression and other distressing health problems.

What I find inspiring to read is that we burn an amazing 70% fat during rest, 35% during low level exercise, 20% during moderate exercise, and a low 10% during intense exercise. During sleep we should burn fats. However, if the liver is not fuelled prior to bed, we release stress hormones from the adrenal glands which raise our heart rate and blood pressure. These hormones instead of burning fat, degrade muscle and bone. The liver must deliver 10 grams of glucose every hour -- 6.5 to the brain, 3.5 to the kidneys and red blood cells. As the liver capacity is only 75 grams, most people go to bed with a depleted liver, activating the adrenal glands and do not recover. And if you do not recover you do not burn fats.
The hibernation diet essentially aims to encourage people to reap the benefit of your body's own natural recovery system and optimize their recovery biology or fat burning biology, as explicitly termed by the author who believed that this diet is not only to a healthy weight but unlocking energy resources you never know you had. So, if you interested to have a more in-depth account of this honey diet, check out the book "The Hibernation Diet" in which you will find details of the suggested diet plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the different types of resistance exercises described in clear steps.

A Honey Fan Wrote...

A regular visitor of Benefit of Honey wrote to me and shared about his positive experience in using the hibernation diet and I am excited to post it here for all(with his permission of course!):
"I have been practising the hibernation diet for twenty months, and I'm still getting a wonderful effect on weight loss. All I exactly have to do is to consume honey one hour before bed as well as to have healthy meals everyday. I usually take two tablespoonful of honey or three and literally "it works while I sleep". I weighed 85.6kg at the beginning of November in 2006 when I began this diet. After twenty months, my weight hovers around 70kg these days. I lost about 16kg without doing any exercises in only twenty months! It's amazing! In addition it helps me get up immediately in next morning by taking honey before bed. Fueling the liver with honey before bed is really beneficial. Also, I happened to take a blood test half a year before I started the diet, the amount of triglyceride or neutral fat in the blood was 585mg/dL. It was a shocking value. And recently I took a blood test again. The result showed that the amount of neutral fat has drastically dropped to 157mg/dL in only two years! I believe it is an effect of the hibernation diet.
When it comes to the meals, I usually have a slice of toast, a vegetable salad, and of course honey as a toast spread almost every morning. And for dinner I often have the Japanese style meal, which may somewhat be traditional, mainly rice, vegetables, fish, tofu and so on.
Among other benefits, I was able to integrate this diet very easily and comfortably as part of my lifestlye and the best thing is I could actually continue with the diet for so long. What I do to lose weight and stay healthy is to just consume honey before bed!"

Personal observation regarding cinnamon (and maybe Vit. C also)

In 2004 I went to the doctor and had my full blood work done - fasting sugar, A1C, full cholesterol panel, PSA, liver enzymes......the whole nine yards. My total cholesterol was 252. Also, at the time, I had been on medication for mild high blood pressure for about 2 years. My typical unmedicated BP would be about 140/90 - both numbers high and a 50 point spread instead of the normal 40 point spread. Even about two years later my BP still showed a 50 point spread even after being on BP meds for about 4 years total, although my total BP was down to 130/80, typically.

A couple of months ago I went to the doc and had the same blood work done and my total cholesterol was down to 202 - a 20% decrease from '04. A couple of weeks before that my BP was checked and it was 122/82. A couple of weeks after the blood work it was checked and it was 115/75. I was still taking the same BP medication and had never taken anything for the cholesterol except Vytorin briefly, which I quit because I started feeling tired a lot after I started taking it (I only took it for about two months in '04).

My diet is still the same now as it was in '04. I still smoke. I don't get any more or less exercise, which is to say very little. The only things I do different is that for about the last two years I've been taking 2,000mg of cinnamon in capsules and 2,000mg of Vit. C, both twice a day. And my total cholesterol is down 20% and my BP spread is down to the normal 40, when it had been 50 even with medication for several years.

Just my personal observation......

I have been using local honey on myself and my children for topical wounds for over 30 years. The wounds heal wonderfully and never get infected. Also I take honey internally because it is a natural antibiotic. And I always buy local because of local pollens, etc. I always buy raw honey too. Tastes so good. I will print out all the cinnamon info too, and try some of them. Can't hurt.

I think I'll try that honey and cinnamon mixture for topping on biscuits, etc. I don't much care for the natural taste of honey by itself, but I think the taste would be improved with the addition of the cinnamon.

Examples of people with lifestyles that may make them more vulnerable to adrenal fatigue:*

  • Full time university student
  • Student supporting self with job
  • Mother with two or more children and little support from family or friends
  • Single parent
  • Unhappily married person
  • Employee in extremely unhappy and stressful work conditions
  • Self-employed person with a new or struggling business
  • Drug or alcohol abuser
  • Shift worker on alternating schedule that requires sleep pattern to be frequently adjusted
  • Person who is all work, little play
Examples of life events that may help precipitate adrenal fatigue:*

  • Unrelieved pressure or frequent crises at work and/or home
  • Severe emotional trauma (death of someone close, divorce, etc.)
  • Major surgery with slow recovery
  • Prolonged or repeated respiratory infections
  • Serious burns - including severe sunburns
  • Head trauma
  • Loss of stable job
  • Sudden change in financial status
  • Relocation without support of friends or family
  • Repeated or overwhelming chemical exposure (including drug and alcohol abuse).
In short, adrenal fatigue occurs when the amount of stress or combined stresses over-extend the capacity of the body (mediated by the adrenals) to compensate for and recover from that stress.* Once this capacity to cope and recover is exceeded, some form of adrenal fatigue is likely to occur.*

Why I Created adrenalfatigue.org

At one time or another, adrenal fatigue affects an estimated 80% of people living in industrialized countries, yet it has been ignored and largely ignored by the medical community. As a physician in private practice, the number of people I can work with is limited, so in order to reach and help the many individuals who experience adrenal fatigue, I wrote the book Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome.
While writing, I realized that if my book reached the number of people needing it most, there would be an ongoing need for additional resources. Therefore I decided to develop adrenalfatigue.org to provide new and updated information about adrenal fatigue and the effects of stress as it becomes available.
This website is not intended to replace the book, since the book contains a much more in-depth and comprehensive explanation of adrenal fatigue, its development and management than any website could possibly cover. However this website will change and expand as needed. We welcome your comments.

To your health,
Dr. James Wilson

Not enough information. No studies are cited. No references are given.

Honey and cinnamon are good for health, sure. But this little list is classic snake oil. Not one statement is backed by anything but hot air. And, remember, too much of anything will bite you.

I'll stay with ground and stick cinnamon.

Actually, real snake oil, that the Chinese brought to America, does cure many things.

The con-artist stuff that was sold as snake oil in the Old West Medicine Shows is a different thing.

The honey I can do the problem is finding real cinnamon which is very expensive. Nearly all commonly sold cinnamon is not real cinnamon although it is labeled cinnamon. How do I know this? I am not allergic to real Ceylon cinnamon. What is sold as cinnamon is cassia which is in the cinnamon family and can be called cinnamon but it isn't the real thing.

For more information if anyone is interested I am including a link http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/cassia.html which may work.

mscoffee, Add a few legs and you have a tattoo of the Loch Ness monster. :) That looks like it hurt. Good luck with the honey.

Ender, I did not know that about Chinese snake oil. Yuck!

ceeblue..... LOL, I do have a few tat's but they are flower's and critters, I'm not sure Nessie would fit in to well.

Seeker and Herbmountain, I thank you for your concerns and would normally use a burn cream, but I think I'm going to use this one as a test for the future without access to current medical remedy's, and to self validate honey as a tool for healing burns.

I work around some hot stuff and burns are a common occurrence but I will definitely keep a close watch on it for any signs of infection.

I must say that so far I'm impressed, normally I would be feeling more pain, this is feeling more like a minor irritant than a painful burn.

Since this popped up, I've been putting cinnamon (or cassia) in everything. Put some in Yoplait french vanilla last night, and damn it was good!

My Encyclopedia of Food indicates that the cassia cinnamon from Indo-china (it's not a new encyclopedia) is as good as Ceylon cinnamon, but not as good as the Chinese. I'm sure both have properties, but which one is best for any of us is obviously subject to trial and error.
