Check out the upper left of this infrared satellite view of the eastern Pacific. What is that weird thing?

It is called a "Gateway."

Several years ago I received an artists painting set as a gift...I spent all day (never painted before in my life) and for some reason created the very image shown on your photo!

I actually named it "Gateway." My wife now has it hanging in her office at work. The last painting (and first) I ever did.

GATEWAY! To what? You ask? Well...you know to what!

maybe this time it'll work. This one looks more like the moon.

Could be the angle... could be the moon... but hey.. looks like it could be a big hunk of 'roid too... :)

I dunno... for those of you who read 'Lucifer's Hammer' could this be Hot Fudge Wednesday? LOL

It can't be the moon. Those of you on the east coast can look out your window to the east and see the moon low in the sky (I'm guessing on this, but I'm pretty sure it is true.)

If not the moon, then what? It isn't on the current photo.

Maybe it's the sock I lost yesterday while I was doing my laundry...

It could still be the moon.

These Sats are geosynchronous so they are orbiting at the same speed as the earth ie from left to right in this photo so the moon would now be behind the earth and visible from the east coast shortly.

The lead image seems to be continually updating to the current GEOS image. Based on
Dabom's post at 10:17 PM EDT, having the B&W teardrop and a timestamp of 0000 Zulu,
and the moon's orbital period of approximately 25 hours,
if it is the moon, it may be visible again in the 0100 Zulu image for 8/29/02.

If I recall, the difference is 5 hours, so sometime between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM EDT, the new image should be there. Look for a timestamp of 0100 on the first image of this thread. If you see a blob, it was the moon. Lack of a blob does not rule out the moon, as I am unsure if the timing of the shot is exactly the same.
The teardrop shape rather than a perfect circle may be due to the scan rate for the image. If it takes a few minutes to produce the image, the motion of the moon through space will cause a blurring effect, similar to taking a picture of a moving object without panning and a slow shutter speed, hence the teardrop.

Well....whatever it is.....this thread has generated more than just a casual interest among our "guests"....

As I peek into our "whos on line" sig...looks like a large portion of "guests" are reviewing this thread....

And check out how many views in the past 18 hours.........:D

Whatever the heck it is, it is not on the original first pic posted yesterday. Where did it go?

I saw it yesterday, but today it is gone. Interesting.

Mr_Larry made the faux pas of linking to the photo, rather than saving it to his own computer and uploading it to our site where it will remain in perpetuity.

about 24+ hours from when he viewed it originally, it should come back up to about where is was then. i think the moon is waning so it may be just a tad smaller. or is that bigger? will it be out of the frame? gads, i can't wait.

Judging by what is seen in the two B&W images, I'd vote for the moon. It has the same shadow shape as that of the earth. The sun is behind and over the "left shoulder" of the satellite, and the moon would be something over 90 degrees ahead of the sun relative to the earth's rotation. That seems about right, since the moon is now up shortly before dawn.

Since the original image is going to change continuously
I have taken a snapshot of it exactly 24 hrs later, massaged the size a bit, and here it is (again):

I did save the original image to my computer, but it is over 100k and can not resize it. I would be happy to email it to someone who can resize the image.

Larry, you may no longer be able to edit it into the original post!
Too much time expired. You need admin help to have it done.
(it would also fix the scroll bar for many, so it's still worthwhile.)
