Someone asked yesterday who authorized the airlift and under what authority (see post 826 for Russian reaction to the airlift and transporting of Georgian troops from Iraq).

Airlift of Georgian troops from Iraq near complete: Pentagon
1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US military has nearly completed the airlift of 2,000 Georgian troops from Iraq to Georgia, but is providing no other military assistance to Georgian forces, a Pentagon spokesman said.

"The support we are providing right now is in the form of transportation of their troops back from Iraq," said Bryan Whitman, the spokesman.

His comments came as Georgian officials said Russian forces were occupying the city of Gori after Georgian forces had been ordered to withdraw and reinforce the capital, Tblisi.

Whitman denied an accusation by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that the Georgian troops were flown directly into the combat zone.

Whitman said Georgian troops were moved out of Iraq in US military flights over the weekend, and that the redeployment should be completed on Monday.

He would not say where they were being taken.

"Reports suggesting they are being flown directly into the fight are wrong," he said.

"We are fulfilling our agreement with the Georgian government that in an emergency we will assist them in redeploying their troops. We are honoring that commitment," he said.

Whitman said the military commanders in Iraq were making adjustments to cover for the loss of the Georgians, the third largest troop contributor to the US-led coalition.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates spoke twice over the weekend with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, but those discussions focused on the troop flights, Whitman said.

The secretary also spoke with the Russian defense minister over the weekend, but Whitman would not say what they discussed.

Meanwhile, 130 US troops and military contractors who were in Georgia to train troops for deployments to Iraq have been assembled at an undisclosed location and were safe, he said.

He said there no plans to remove them from the country.

Asked if planning was underway to evacuate civilians, he said, "The US military obviously always looks at any world crisis and does a variety of contingency planning."

Can anyone here confirm?

Can't confirm that but see the thread in BS.

Are you sure about that?

That goes along with the question I had on another thread:

"Seriously, here is a question in regards to this, and any diplomacy:

Does anyone know if Buffs have started deploying? I mean, that would be the muscle behind the diplomatic pressure IMHO, the end of the spear in the air, awaiting Russia's response."

....Georgia's president says Russia's troops have effectively cut the country in half by seizing a strategic city that straddles the country's main east-west highway.... a top official at the Georgian embassy in Moscow, Givi Shugarov, said Russian troops appeared to be moving toward Tbilisi and he alleged Russia's goal was the complete liquidation of the Georgian government.

Aye, that's what I figure tae.

The Bush Speech will coincide with the UNSC meeting at 500PM EDT.

DEVELOPING @ 3:25 p.m. EDT: The United Nations Security Council has called another emergency session for Monday afternoon, scrambling to resolve the fighting between Russia and U.S.-allied Georgia over the breakaway region of South Ossetia and other parts of Georgia.

Facing Russia's superior firepower and expanding range of attacks, Georgia requested this latest session, which is to begin at 5 p.m. EDT in New York. Georgia is not a council member; Belgium's ambassador, Jan Grauls, approved the session as this month's council president.

The White House announced that President Bush -- enroute back from attending the Olympics in Beijing -- will make a statement on the Georgia-Russia crisis at 5:15 p.m. EDT

Refresh for updates

per FOxNews

Russian troops, not peacekeepers, finally someone catches on to Russias word games.

The only support Russia had in previous meetings was because they'd not gone beyond the conflict area, not that it means much anyway, see the last sentence Russia can prevent any resolution from passing.

UN to tell council of Russia incursion into Georgia 11 Aug 2008 18:05:40 GMT
Source: Reuters
(Adds diplomats, updates council meeting time to 5 p.m. EDT)

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 11 (Reuters) - A top U.N. peacekeeping official said he will tell the Security Council later on Monday that U.N. observers have confirmed that Russian troops had entered Georgia from its breakaway region of Abkhazia.

U.N. assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping Edmond Mulet told Reuters that U.N. military observers based in Abkhazia have confirmed that Russian troops occupied the Senaki military base inside Georgia proper.

He said this was the first independent confirmation of Russian forces moving into areas of Georgia outside the separatist territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"These are Russian troops, not peacekeepers," he said.

Originally Mulet had said he would brief the 15-nation Security Council at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), but a U.N. spokeswoman later said the meeting was set for 5 p.m.

Diplomats said the Georgian delegation had requested the meeting, which will be held behind closed doors.

This will be the council's fifth emergency session on Georgia in as many days. Council members had originally tried to agree on the wording of a unanimous appeal for a cease-fire but were unable to come up with language acceptable to Russia.

Separately, council diplomats told Reuters that French and U.S. officials, with the support of Britain and other council members, were drafting a resolution condemning Russia's military action against Georgia and calling for a cease-fire.

They hoped to circulate a draft text to the full council by early Tuesday at the latest, diplomats said.

"I don't know if there will be a text ready by the time the council meets this afternoon," one diplomat said.

As a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, Russia has the power to prevent any resolution from passing. (Reporting by Louis Charbonneau, Editing by Philip Barbara

FWIW, I live near Offutt AFB (Stratcom) near Omaha and was out fishing this afternoon. Seen much more air traffic than usual coming and going. Mostly fighters and tankers. I don't know if this is a dot or not. Traffic very heavy and unusual to see this much. I have a very bad feeling about all of this.

Russia Jets Bomb Georgia Oil Pipeline

RUSTAVI, Georgia — Russian jets targeted a key oil pipeline in Georgia yesterday with more than 50 missiles in a raid that raised fears that the conflict would tighten Moscow's stranglehold on Europe's energy supplies.

Deep craters pockmarked the landscape south of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, in a Y-shaped pattern straddling the British-operated pipeline. The attack left two deep holes less than 100 yards either side of a pressure vent on the pipeline. Shrapnel of highly engineered munitions littered the area, but there was no visible damage to the pipeline.

Its vulnerability was summed up by a yellow hazard sign next to the vent warning against digging in the area. Anyone venturing on to the site is warned against smoking.

Local police recorded 51 strikes. "I have no doubt they wanted to target the pipeline, there is nothing else here," a policeman who witnessed the attack, Giorgi Abrahamisvili, said. "It was terribly intense, the smell of cordite spread everywhere. I had to abandon my car and hide in a ditch but the jets weren't interested in other targets."

BP operates the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports 1% of the world's oil needs, or one million barrels a day from Azerbaijan to the Mediterranean. A spokesman played down the impact of the strike, pointing out that pumping was suspended last week because of a terrorist attack in Turkey. "At the moment the pipeline is not running at any capacity, because there was a fire," the spokesman said.

Georgia is a crucial link in a three-country energy corridor, vital to western Europe's oil and gas supply. The pounds $3.8 billion pipeline is the only major conduit for Central Asian resources not under Russian control.

The Kremlin under Prime Minister Putin used gas exports to Europe as a tool of foreign policy. Reduced supplies to eastern Europe forced Russia's neighbors to curtail pro-western ambitions. Western Europe, especially Germany, is dangerously vulnerable to reduced supplies from Russia at times of political tension.

Georgian politicians accused Russia of waging the war to achieve wider strategic goals. Moscow has portrayed it as an intervention on behalf of beleaguered renegade enclaves.

"They need control of energy routes," President Saakashvili of Georgia said. "They need sea ports. They need transportation infrastructure. And primarily, they want to get rid of us."

An important bit of info is what kind of equipment did this returning Georgian demi-brigade bring with it in their USAF supplied airlift? Humvee's with TOWs, Stingers or Javelins would be really handy.

Well I just came across some speculation/confimation of something I said in this thread eariler....Crap. Consider this:

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...nt_9162745.htm

Ukraine warned Russia on Sunday that it could bar Russian Black Sea Fleet warships from returning to their Ukrainian base of Sevastopol due to their deployment to Georgia's coast, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"In order to prevent the circumstances in which Ukraine could be drawn into a military conflict ... Ukraine reserves the right to forbid the ships and vessels that may be involved in these actions from returning to the Ukrainian territory until the settlement of the conflict," the statement said.

If they were to do this, I quarantee the Russians would respond with force. Things are lining up in just the way that Putrid wants them.

Yeah, I read/heard about this earlier today. The Baltic nations are on alert right now, God help them.

Then if the war begins in Eastern Europe, then this will immediately bring
in all of Europe and the U.S. into the conflict.

Now I have a sinking feeling what Pres. Bush's press conference will be about.
Guess the fireworks could very much be flying really soon in my opinion.

And I Personally have a feeling that Pres. Bush will NOT give up this Pipeline
without a fight.

Revealing the agenda...
Here’s a press release from the United States Ambassador to the UN, Zalmay Khalilzad, on a disturbing statement by Russian foreign minister Lavrov that reveals Russia’s true endgame in the Georgia conflict: Remarks by Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. Permanent Representative, on the situation in Georgia.
http://www.usunnewyork.usmission.gov/press_releases/20080810_219.html

I want to focus however, on one point that Ambassador Churkin made. Ambassador Churkin referred to his minister’s phone conversation with Secretary of State Rice this morning. That conversation raises serious questions about Russian objectives.

In that conversation, Foreign Minister Lavrov told U.S. Secretary of State Rice that the democratically elected President of Georgia “must go”.

I quote again: “Saakashvili must go.”

This is completely unacceptable and crosses a line. I want to ask Ambassador Churkin, is your government’s objective regime change in Georgia, the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Georgia. Mr. President, Russia must affirm their aim is not to change the democratically elected government of Georgia and it accepts the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia .

Mr. President, Russia is threatening the territorial integrity of Georgia and this Council must act decisively to reaffirm the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

Look. ANYONE who belives that Putin was going to stop with just one country, is delusional. (Former Soviet Republics, so tasty you can't stop with just one)...

He's going for ALL of them, and he'll take as many as he can until SOMEONE stands up and says "ENOUGH! NO MORE!"

That "Someone" is likely to be NATO....

Now, Why do we care??? Because after he gets ALL o fhis old republics back into the fold he will come of r europe and THEN he'll see about the US.

problem with this Night Driver, Russia just does not have the military hardware
that they used to have it seems. And Russia's military is NOT battle hardened
like ours are at the present time it seems.

That's part of it. That's how Bad Vlad gets control of the oil pipeline/transport with full confidence, too. No other way is bona-fide secure unless he takes out the Georgian government.

That's been previously posted, Robin, yesterday I think, all the days are a jumble for me sorry, important part though confirmation, Russia stated (in essence, not quoting) that the ships would not be stopped from returning.

So anyway, you're right, so many blinking points and Russia double-dog daring anyone to blink.

And by that time, Europe and the US will be involved and Nukes will probably
litter the horizon.

Not while we're tangling with Iran...
and helping Israel....
while we have troops in Iraq....
spliting up their duties staving off Syria......
Other troops in Afganistan.....
Fighting off Al Queada in Pakistan....
(not to mention the craziness going on there)

See how crazy its gonna get yet?

The Russians never throw away military gear, they still have WWII tanks & arty in the stores,
growing up in Russia is enough to battle harden them, then you have the Russian 2yr military service which is damn scary, have you seen what they do to recruits, you spend the first year getting the shit kicked out of you and then the 2nd year kicking the shit outta the first year recruits

In reference to the map of Europe I am including the following factoids:

-- Azerbaijan supplied much of the Soviet Union's oil on the Eastern Front of World War II
-- According to official figures, between 93.4% and 96% of the population is Muslim, of which 85% are Shia and 15%.
--Armenia: Due to its position between two unfriendly neighbours, Armenia has close security ties with Russia. At the request of the Armenian government, Russia maintains a military base in the northwestern Armenian city of Gyumri as a deterrent against Turkey.

IF this is about a Russian trek to the South through to Iran......

Quite possibly Rattlehead. "ANYBODY above the grade of private knows this was a set up by the Russians. No country can move masses of troops, tank divisions, and part of a naval fleet on a moment's notice like the Russians have in this invasion." Putin is po'd about the missle defense shield and he's showing it.

Just had a flash back, don't Russian tanks have problems with the treads wearing quickly as they don't have the rubber road pads that Western tanks do??
