c2c had rumors that 3 persons in Toronto are under quarantine for an unknown respiratory outbreak...i've been scanning the wires for confirmation, and this story finally hit on a Toronto radio station website...

Two Toronto Hospitals Facing Possible Outbreak
Oct, 01 2005 - 2:00 AM

TORONTO/640 TORONTO - Two Toronto hospitals are under partial quarantine in fear of a respiratory outbreak.
There are reports that 2 people were admitted to Scarborough General hospital with an unknown respiratory illness. As a result, the triage and emergency departments are now under semi-quarantine. It's believed the same areas have been affected at Rouge Valley Centenary in Scarborough.

Other units of the hospitals are functioning normally.

Why is it always Toronto? Didn't they have an outbreak of that flu (mind block, can't think of the name) from China/Vietnam. My guess, is that it is the same or, perhaps the avian flu or west nile. In any case, it seems that Toronto is always the first to report new diseases.

I say SEAL THE BORDERS!!

Are you thinking of SARS? There was evidence of it in the USA, so perhaps what is unique about Canada is that outbreaks are admitted, reported, and steps are taken to protect the public despite economic consequences... :p ;)

c2c caller from Toronto:

partial quarantine hospitals are admitting patients but administering a more intensive triage, requiring patients to put on mask and disinfect, only patients allowed in and no quests...upper respiratory symptoms are dominant

Asian bird flu reported as a possibility in local media, and media also saying it could be just regular flu: they just don't know yet

caller gave 2 links:

On TB every waking moment
I heard them mention possible "bird flu" too. I haven't got to listen to much of c2c, because I am having major problems with the station going silent, and something happened to my computer with "dns", the only way I can get to tb2k, is going the 70.................

It has been a lousy day all around, and it looks to be carrying over into Sat. :shk:

Until there is confirmation of H5N1 or any other respiratory illness we shouldn't be jumping the panic wagon. I understand the concern, but until they find the cause/and or confirm it we're just spinning our wheels...Just keep an eye open, ear to the ground and continue to prepare as if it is positive.

As a recent member this is actually my first post, so hi all.

When Sars broke out, many of the lives lost were in the health care facilities staff. There was a bit of heat here directed at the government not being proactive, and on top of containment from the earliest stages.

Therefore, I wouldn't be too worried as yet. There are a whole whack of new procedures and a whole lot of public pressure left over from SARs. This could just be an overreaction, but better that than an under-reaction considering we all know it is just a matter of time before we all are hit by something.

True its not good to panic but how long would it take to confirm if it is bird flu and how far would it have spread by then. Even if it is confirmed how long would it be before we would be told. All the latest news on bird flu and then this has me ready to :msk: and

Thank you

Such a warm welcome :p thank you all!

Having been in a city with such a very public (globally reported) disease as SARs, I am actually quite reassured by the speedy reporting of this current news.

Just recently the ptb here were talking about SARs in the context of a warning to the government on preparing for such things. Once burned twice shy!

I hope this isn't the bird flu, but it wouldn't surprise me as well. In Canada or the US. When you consider the number of people travelling to and from Asia, incubation periods, and the lack of health screening of arriving travellers, its a very real concern.

Like SARS, this could be another unkown...something from left field.
I agree, be vigilante but no need for panic yet.
nice to see officials being proactive and stepping to the plate early rather than too late.

Yes you need to take that advice.

B-T-W as to the question why Toronto? Simple, the western nations have a history of being more forthwright that the Asian nations where these cases are covered up as a normally policy. Look at how little and how late information was received from China during the SARS outbreak.

Bird Flu Outbreaks Reported In United States and Canada, Toronto Hospitals Begin Quarantine Lockdown as Canadian and American Authorities Order News Blackout, Bio-Virus Released In Washington D.C.

http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index831.htm

By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Russian Subscribers

Russian Intelligence Services are reporting today that Bird Flu Outbreaks have begun occurring in both the United States and Canada and to which the Military Authorities in both countries have ordered a news ‘blackout’ due to rising fears of panic and hording among their citizens.

Reports from Canada show that hospitals in Toronto have begun necessary quarantine procedures, and as we can read as reported by Canada’s AM640 News Service in their article titled "A Toronto Hospital Facing Possible Outbreak" and which says, "A Toronto hospital is apparently under partial quarantine in fear of a respiratory outbreak. There are reports that 2 people were admitted to Scarborough General Hospital with an unknown respiratory illness. As a result, the triage and emergency departments are apparently under semi-quarantine."

Reports from the United States are showing that in their Region of Michigan, which is adjacent to Canada, another likely outbreak has occurred, and as we can read as reported by the WDIV Television News Service in their article titled "No School While Mystery Illness Probe Continues" and which says, "A high school that was forced to evacuate twice this week when more than a dozen students mysteriously became ill is closed Friday. Extra-curricular activities scheduled at other locations will take place Friday, but no events will be held at Saline High School, Local 4 reported. Crews ran more tests at the high school overnight in an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the students' illness. The illness has been traced to two classrooms located on different floors and opposite sides of the building, Local 4 reported."

The events occurring in these Western Countries are exactly mirroring those of Asia and Russia where the first to die are birds, then fish, then mammals then human beings, and as we had previously reported on this bird flu is also killing dogs, and as we can read as reported by the News4Jax News Service in their article titled "Mysterious Dog Flu Beginning To Hit Pets In Florida" and which says:

"A puzzling outbreak of respiratory disease in dogs has been tracked to a virus that has infected horses for decades -- a transfer researchers say is usually rare, but is now being seen in pet dogs. The illness first drew attention sweeping through kennels of racing greyhounds in several states and has also been found in household dogs in Florida and New York. The flu kills between 5 percent and 8 percent of infected dogs, Dr. Cynda Crawford of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine said at a briefing Monday. Some dogs get a cough, runny nose and fever while others show no symptoms at all. The flu can cause symptoms similar to the common illness known as kennel cough, Crawford said. But kennel cough is usually caused by a bacteria while the new illness is caused by a virus."

But not to ‘puzzling’ is this Bird Flu Pandemic, now including the Americas, but rather to the reasons for these Western Governments not warning their people to the direness of these events is what is more puzzling, even to the warnings being issued by the UN they are ignoring, and as we can read as reported by the Associated Press News Service in their article titled "New Flu Pandemic Could Kill 150 Million" and which says:

"A top U.N. public health expert warned Thursday that a new influenza pandemic could come anytime and claim millions of lives unless officials to take action now to control an epidemic in Asia. Dr. David Nabarro of the World Health Organization called on governments to take immediate steps to address the threat at a news conference following his appointment as the new U.N. coordinator to lead a global drive to counter a human flu pandemic. "We expect the next influenza pandemic to come at any time now, and it's likely to be caused by a mutant of the virus that is currently causing bird flu in Asia," he said."

These events also coincide with the bio-terror events occurring during this past weeks war protests in Washington D.C., and to which the Military Leaders were not going to release this information to their citizens until both Russian and Chinese Embassies stated they would release it, as these Embassies have bio-sensor capabilities also, and as we can read as reported the Washington Post News Service in their article titled "Biohazard Sensors Triggered" and which says:

"Biohazard sensors showed the presence of small amounts of potentially dangerous tularemia bacteria in the Mall area last weekend as huge crowds assembled there, but health officials said they believed the levels were too low to be a threat. Health authorities in the Washington area were notified yesterday that the bacteria were found in and near the area between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, where crowds gathered Saturday for an antiwar rally and a book festival. The notification, which came from federal health officials, said that after the initial detection, subsequent tests "supported the presence of low levels" of the bacteria."

Russian Scientists however dispute the ‘bacterial’ nature of this bio-release among hundreds of thousands of war protesters, stating instead that the attacking agent was ‘viral in nature’.

As we have all too often seen, and today is no different, the masses of these Western people are both unaware of these events themselves, but more importantly are unknowing as to why these events are occurring and how they are leading to their total subjugation.

As their Military Leaders perpetuate the myths that social chaos will ensue as both natural catastrophes and this violent Bird Flu Pandemic reshape their entire world, some of their own leading researchers are trying to warn them, and as we can read as reported by the Chronicle Review News Service in their article titled "Disaster Sociologists Study What Went Wrong in the Response to the Hurricanes, but Will Policy Makers Listen?" and which says:

"The panic myth is a consistent one," said Russell R. Dynes, a professor emeritus of sociology at Delaware, who was among the founders, in 1963, of the Disaster Research Center at Ohio State University. "The idea of social breakdown -- I'm even pretty damn skeptical of that," he said. "One of the problems here is TV. If you take a film clip and you run it for five hours, you create a notion that something's happening." In 40 years of disaster research, Mr. Dynes said, he and his colleagues have found very few instances of true social breakdown."

But not to the path of sanity and truth are the Military Leaders of the United States leading their people, but rather to the path of totalitarian fascist rule are they being led, and as we can read as reported by the American Social Commentator Alan Bock in his essay titled "Posse Comitatus: Remembering Why" and which says:

"President Bush, showing in full bloom the instincts that make it clear that whatever he is politically he is not a conservative of the traditional limited-government or Constitutionalist variety, has lofted a trial balloon to promote the idea of having the military play a more extensive, earlier and perhaps even primary role in handling future disasters. The fact that he has mentioned it more than once, and that press secretary Scott McClellan has discussed both that idea and the idea of bypassing governors when disaster strikes, suggests that the notion is not just something that popped into his head on the spur of the moment.

Posse Comitatus is a Latin phrase that sounds obscure to most people, so it might not seem like a big thing to amend the act to make it easier to deploy the military in essentially civilian duties. But it is a big thing. The president's call to consider changes so far seems to have had little resonance, as have earlier calls. But the president is a stubborn man who sometimes confuses stubbornness with integrity or commitment to principle."

Today marks yet another milestone in the continuing demise of the once great peoples of the United States, but perhaps even more shocking is that their destruction is occurring due to their own neglect and ignorance of what is truly happening in the world today.

UPDATE: Unknown Respiratory Illness
Oct, 01 2005 - 2:00 AM

TORONTO/640 TORONTO - 14 cases of an unknown respiratory illness in Scarborough today.
2 people were admitted to Scarborough General Hospital with an unknown respiratory illness. They have been placed in respiratory isolation, but contrary to reports this morning, the hospital was never placed under quarantine.

Earlier reports that Rouge Valley Centenary in Scarborough was also quarantined have also been struck down.

Director of Communications at Rouge Valley Health Anne-Marie Males says 12 residents of the 7 Oaks nursing home have been admitted to their hospital with flu-like symptoms. They have all been put in isolated rooms, but she says this is a all normal precaution taken when an illness hasn't been identified.

She says Rouge Valley is asking patients not to bring visitors through emergency, but states again that there is no quarantine in effect at their facility.

The hospitals never were reported as being under quarantine. They were reported as being under partial quarantine, which consists of admitting new patients but not permitting visitors, doing an enhanced triage, and utilizing protective procedures such as having patients wear masks. Now this article right here admits that protective procedures for a respiratory outbreak are being followed (meaning masks are worn), and that the patients are in isolation rooms....meaning, no roommates or visitors. ISOLATION ROOMS ARE QUARANTINE.

You are certainly correct, DJ. This wouldn't have simmered down to an exercise in semantics had the news of visitor restriction and patient isolation not been released as a partial quarantine. Hospitals routinely have patient isolation (such as in staph infections, TB, etc.), but this case involves an unknown pathogen, specifically one that attacks the respiratory system, and that may have led the news leaker to suspect SARS or H5N1.

The leaker could be correct. We just don't know, and since we don't it's better to err on the side of caution, I think.
