Greta Van Susteren to leave Fox News after 14 years; Brit Hume named new anchor of 'On the Record'

Oliver Darcy

Greta Van Susteren will depart Fox News after 14 years with the network, Fox News announced Tuesday morning.

Brit Hume will take over as the new host of "On the Record."

“We are grateful for Greta's many contributions over the years and wish her continued success," Fox News co-presidents Jack Abernethy and Bill Shine said in a statement.

Abernethy and Shine added: "As one of the best political analysts in the industry, Brit is the ideal choice to host a nightly political program while the most dynamic and captivating election in recent history unfolds. Having Brit at the helm of this show will enable FOX News to continue on track to have its highest-rated year ever as the network dominates the cable news landscape."

Hume previously anchored "Special Report," the network's flagship weekly political news show. He retired as the show's host in 2008 and transitioned to senior political analyst.

Hume said in a statement that he was "happy to take on" his new assignment during this "extraordinary election."

"My Fox News colleagues have set a high standard for political coverage which I'll do my best to uphold," he said. "I'm honored to be asked."

Van Susteren, who gained notoriety during the O.J. Simpson murder trial as a legal analyst on CNN, had been with Fox News since 2002 and was a staple on the network.

It was not immediately clear why Van Susteren was leaving the network, but the news came the same day 21st Century Fox announced it had settled former host Gretchen Carlson's sexual harassment lawsuit against ex-CEO Roger Ailes. Several Fox News hosts had key man clauses allowing them to exit if Ailes were to depart.

I watched her show last night for the first time in a long time, not that I had a problem with her, but she was opposite of Lou Dobbs. Sorry to see her go. I watch Fox Business, switch over to Fox if nothing on FB, and usually can't stand what FN has to offer and look for Law and Order.

I use to admire Brit Hume, but can't stand him now because of his position on Trump.

Fox settles with Gretchen Carlson for a reported $20 million, offers apology

Vanity Fair and The New York Times reported citing sources that the media company will pay Carlson $20 million. The magazine added that 21st Century Fox will also settle two other sexual harassment cases brought against Ailes.

"21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that it has settled Gretchen Carlson's lawsuit," the company. "During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team. We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve."

Neither here nor there.
Look for her to replace McLaughlin on PBS. She's one of the few people that could handle both Buchanan and Clift at the same time.

So, it appears Fox News is going to become just another current events entertainment channel. Too bad. It was already heading that direction the past year or so. There's still Brett Baier I guess. I've been watching BBC more often lately anyway, since all the US news is only election crap.

Be Well

may all be well
Yet another reason for me to not watch Fox. Hume is not balanced or reasonable at all about Trump.

One of the last good ones at Fox. I was rooting for her to be one of the Presidential debate moderators. She would be a far sight better than any of the chosen ones. The absolute ONLY reason for me to watch the debates is curiosity about how obvious the bias of the moderators will be, how the public will handle it and how Trump will handle it.

Was she abruptly fired? DH said he thought he heard her say "see you Tues" or something like that.

This is interesting.

I really respect her.

Very interesting turn of events!

Very interesting indeed! Timing is also very interesting, though it is reported that her departure has nothing to do with Carlson's settlement. Not sure I believe that.

Now, there is only one conservative voice- OAN Network... Get ROKU 3, and checkout OAN... Young, fresh, conservative, and as Graham Ledger says, news with a Bible in one hand, and a sword in the other...

FAUX SNOOZE is one of the reasons I dumped cable tv... I still listen to some of FAUX, and certainly Stuart Varney and Lou Dobbs on FBN, but the flagship of tv conservatism has finally revealed it's true name- Titanic 2... Thank the Lord for Sirius/XM...

I'd sure like to see some of them migrate to OAN...

Greta was the only reason left to watch Fox. Hope she finds a spot where she can stay true to her values.

I can totally see why Fox hasn't felt like home for years for her. It changed significantly.

O'Reilly has been gone quite a bit lately also. I understand that even after his past sex harassment issues he has a couple of current ones still up and pending.

Now if only we could get rid of Kelly

I'm really sorry to see her go but I suspect it was a lot more about the election coverage than Ailes. Last winter Fox and others were ordered to tear Donald Trump to shreds. Most went a long with it, but hated it. even now I see reporters look at the producers to see if what the reporter said was ok.

I started to really notice something serious was happening to Fox when I observed their commercials. They were showing the same commercial seven to eight times an hour. I finally muted them all. It seemed like some of their best people were slowly disappearing from the show.

Thats when I remembered Trump had stated as he was getting battered every single moment of his life, that people shouldn't worry about these news stations because when they come after him, he strikes back 10 times harder. What he noticed and so did many others, that every time someone attacked him, something was destroying their business and Trump didn't have anything to do with it. But something did. I wrote about it over and over in a lot of my posts. Many reporters noticed it too, and became careful about what they said.

Just my pov. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

In the last month at Fox, the leads have been taking summer holidays - O'Reilly, Hannity, Kelly, and whatshisname who had a heart attack, is back this week......so others have been covering for them.

Any legitimate news about Andrea Tantaros? Still among the missing. So sad.

GGK

Saw on the news this morning that she's leaving to become a DOCTOR! Go Andrea!!!

It sure has been a strange 2 days though. Day before yesterday, Anna Koiman left with her new husband to live in Australia where he landed a job.

Now Greta.

Strange.

At least Neil Cavuto is back!!!!

Just saw Brit Hume say he will only be doing the show up until the election.

Wish Tucker Carlson could take the spot.

I knew Greta was from Appleton Wisconsin but I didn't know much else about her.

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia,

Early life[edit]

Van Susteren (Dutch for "from Susteren") was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her father, Urban Van Susteren, was of Dutch descent.[4][5] Her mother, born Margery (Conway), was a homemaker of Irish descent.[6][7] Van Susteren's father was a longtime friend of future U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy; McCarthy was best man at Greta Van Susteren's parents' wedding.[8] Urban Van Susteren, an elected judge, served as a campaign strategist for McCarthy, although Urban later broke with him.[9]

Van Susteren's sister, Lise, is a forensic psychiatrist in Bethesda, Maryland. In 2006, Lise was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate.[10] Her brother, Dirk Van Susteren, was a journalist and long-time editor of the Vermont Sunday magazine, jointly published, until folding in 2008, by the Rutland Herald and the Barre Montpelier Times Argus.[11]

Van Susteren graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton in 1972 and the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1976, where she studied geography and economics. She later earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979 and prior to the start of her television work returned to Georgetown Law as an adjunct faculty member in addition to her full-time legal career. She was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Stetson Law School.[12]

I greatly respect Greta, and the other former women of Fox. The more I learn about Ailes, the more I viscerally dislike that creature. I'd talked to him, and texted with him, shortly after 09/11/2001, and at the time, he seemed to be an upstanding guy... I guess if you're not looking for deviant, perverted behavior, and are not able to look into someone's eyes, you can definitely be fooled. I was, and dammit, I hate that he took so many in... I have watched FNC deteriorate for the last several years, and have to wonder if Ailes was symptomatic of that descent into perversion... Now, with Hume replacing the woman I respected most at FOX, since E.D. Hill's departure many years ago, I cannot see any future for it. Only a very few at FOX, Judge Nap and Judge Piro, Neal Cavuto, Lou Dobbs, Stuart Varney- well, most at FBN, you get the idea... If the network is really starting to go down the proverbial drain, it's a tragedy...

Thank God, for OAN, on Roku 3... That, and here, on the internet...

It Continues – Greta Van Susteren Leaves Fox News, Abruptly – Murdoch Immediately Changes Locks…

Posted on September 6, 2016 by sundance

Everyone is already aware of the internal Fox turmoil. It is an ideology issue. Owner Rupert Murdoch was previously exposed as instructing Fox News executives to take out Donald Trump –SEE HERE-. [Remember, the primary executive in charge of Fox politics is Bill Sammon, father to Marco Rubio’s campaign spox] Immigration position(s) is one of Mr. Wall Street Murdoch’s triggers.

brit-hume-1.jpg

In the latest development Greta Van Susteren has invoked the “key man clause” in her contract. With Roger Ailes being fired, several of Fox New’s top voices have an option to exit the network. Greta announced via Facebook:
Yes, I have left the Fox News Channel.

On Thursday night, I made my decision and informed Fox News of my decision that I was leaving Fox News Channel per my contract.

Fox has not felt like home to me for a few years and I took advantage of the clause in my contract which allows me to leave now. The clause had a time limitation, meaning I could not wait.
I love my staff, I love my colleagues, and I love the crews. That is the hardest part of this decision as they are wonderful people.

And most of all? I love the viewers — even the ones who have gotten mad at me over the years and taken swipes.

I hope to continue my career in broadcasting. (link)
Immediately Fox News triggered the “door locking“, all of Greta’s engagement media constructs (ie. Greta Wire Blog) now default to Fox News. And Murdoch’s executives have replaced Greta with Brit Hume – not coincidentally part of the “anti-trump”/”Murdoch-loyalists”. [Other members include: Megyn Kelly, Chris Wallace, Bret Baier, Bill Kristol, George Will, Jonah Goldberg, ETC – see here.]

In addition, Fox announced a $20 million settlement with Gretchen Carlson who was suing the network as a result of alleged sexual harassment from Roger Ailes. That’s a small price to pay by Murdoch who gains over a billion/yr from the empire Ailes built.

When you consider Murdoch was willing to pay Megyn Kelly $6 million up front, on a $10 million pay-off to Kelly for services rendered in the overall ‘destroy Trump’ effort (Murdoch owns Harper Collins), the $20 million to Carlson gains valuation clarity.

[Ironically, it’s widely known (open secret) that Brit Hume had an affair with Megyn Kelly as she was working her way up the network ladder.]
(Via Fox) […] According to a source familiar with the process, Van Susteren asked to renegotiate her contract after Roger Ailes resigned under pressure as Fox News chairman following a sexual harassment lawsuit. Van Susteren is one of a number of key Fox personnel whose contract included a “key man” clause allowing her to leave if Ailes departed.

When those negotiations deadlocked, Van Susteren chose to invoke the departure option, the sources said. Her last show was Thursday, and the swiftness of events did not allow her to deliver an on-air farewell.

Hume, who spends part of the year in Florida, is not interested in taking over the Washington-based show permanently. The sudden vacancy could set off a competition to fill the 7 p.m. ET slot.

This would be among the first major programming decisions made by Rupert Murdoch since the network’s owner stepped in as acting CEO of Fox News after Ailes’ resignation. (link)
