I see Apocalypse Now on TV all the time. How come they never show Platoon or Full Metal Jacket?

Full Metal Jacket is my favorite "funny" (though not meant to be) war movie. The first half is hysterical. Platoon never did much for me, and I found Apocalyse Now to be fascinating and gripping, but ultimately way too SLOW.

IMO the best war movie of all time is We Were Soldiers. If you haven't seen it, you HAVE to do so.

Oddly enough, another of my favs is 12 O'clock High.

I agree about Apocalypse being too slow. I will see if I can get We Were Soldiers thru Netflix.

If you see the long version of the film after seeing the film version of Heart of Darkness with Tim Roth and John Malkovich you can really see the lifting of the story line.

Saving private Ryan is a good one in my opinion. It is close to what war is like, although the movies never really show the bottomless hole in your gut when your away from your loved ones.It is a very strange feeling you get when someone is trying to kill you and then you reflect on your life.Like when you were a kid and growing up,the thoughts just sorta appear in your head and poof there gone just as fast.I used to wonder when you die if there was going to be a tunnel with bright lights, would I see my relatives waiting to greet me or was I gonna go to hell for doing things my job required me to do.I have lost alot of good friends very young before they could have children and I wonder why was I lucky to have 2 very beautiful and successful kids who make me proud everyday!I don't talk about my past very much or the things I have done but I do pray that God has forgiven me and I make it to the pearly gates one day!In 1985 I sustained a head injury and coma and was pronounced clinically dead twice but then was "brought back" from the dead.I did not see or remember any evidence of an after life so who really knows!Anyways I don't even know why I went on this rant, but thanks for listening my friends.Be sure to say a prayer for our men and women in the military on Memorial Day tomorrow,I know from first hand experience that it helps!God Bless America.

ArmyRanger, if you served with honor, don't worry about hell. God created warriors just like He created housewives, teachers and diplomats. Remember that there are warrior Angels in heaven too.

The long version of Apocalypse is a whole nother movie.

I hate to say it, but I think Poker Lips Now (Apocalypse Now) is an awful movie.

It strikes me as pretentious, disrespectful and convoluted.

The first half is barely OK with the Robert Duval appearance being the lone standout.

The second half of the movie with Marlon Brando is one of the most drug addled barges of bilge water ever to float an actor’s career down to the sewage plant for eternity.

I just didn’t get it.

Probably the best scenes in the film are IMHO and not in order 1) Sheen getting picked up in his room and dragged to his briefing, 2) the briefing itself, 3) the bit with the cook going for the mangos and finding the tiger 4) the long speech/discussion around the French planter's table. 5) and of course Duval.

Most of the rest of it is trying at times. But as I stated earlier, if you can see the long version then get ahold of the film version of "Heart of Darkness" you'll see what I mean by the direct lifts of plot (for that matter the film "Lord Jim" as well).

ETA: I'd also add Dennis Hopper's performance at Kuntz's camp.

This is a good Vietnam War movie that is often overlooked.

It features one of the first screen appearances by Lee R. Emery.

OK, gonna thread drift my own thread here, but I read a book 25 years ago, I could swear it was by John McDonald, about a company dropped into the jungle, whose support gets completely cut off and they are pretty much abandoned. Supposed to be based upon a true incident, but I cannot recall the book title and am not sure of the author.

I would highly recommend "The Cruel Sea", a movie about a "flower-class corvette" on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic during WWII. The book is excellent, as is "The Good Shepherd" by C.S. Forester.

We were Soldiers gets my first nod, saving Private Ryan second. Lots of runner ups: one that I really liked was "Tora! Tora! Tora!". I think Mitsubishi made a bunch of flying fake Zeros for the movie (sold them later to recoup the cost).

Das Boot best submarine movie ever. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Boot

+1 on that. MOST excellent write up on it on Wikipedia too. They went to extreme levels to accurately pix the interior of the sub, including locking the cast within for up to a week before shooting (so they get the accurate claustrophobic "look" about them I guess.)
