And here are some people who fate was kinder to.
Kind of makes you wonder why on any given day some people are either lucky or unlucky by less than a second.

Hey michaelteever,
I don't think anyone got hurt in the second one. Just a lot of very close calls.
The human body just was not made to compete with metal.
Ask some people just how jarring it is to sit in the police seat belt demo machine, and that's only about 5 mph.

I have always been fascinated by what goes through a persons mind in that fraction of a second as their world is coming apart.
I remember one time when I was about 30yo. I was in the Navy and had gone home for lunch and was heading back to the base on my motorcycle. I was doing between 35 and 40 mph and an uncoming car made a sudden left turn in front of me. I had no time to react. I remember my wrists hitting and snapping off both handlebar mirrors and my body broke the windshield off. I didn't feel anything and it was so strange. My 650 Yamaha crunched the passenger side front panel, but my body kept going. I remember looking inside the car as I flew over the car's hood upside down. It seemed so slow as I saw two black ladies with their mouths open screaming and their eyes were so big. I remember how I thought they looked so funny as I was doing a somersault over their hood. I landed on my butt and back about 15 feet on the other side of the car.No serious injuries. Just a huge bruise on my butt where my wallet was, that that went from red to purple and black and lasted for almost 2 weeks. The point is how things seemed to go in slow motion once I hit the car, and how I felt detached from the whole thing, like a third party observer, as my body went flying over the car. Also, how a fraction of a second, changes everything. If I would have been going just a little slower or they would have turned just a tenth of a second sooner, I would have hit the side of their car right in the middle and likely have gone right through their side window into the passenger compartment, or been killed hitting the corner post.

Hey michaelteever,

Yeah, I've been there, done that. Twice in my life 'everything slowed down'. Two totally different circumstances. The first was the first time I attempted to downhill ski, myself and four buddy's went to a local ski resort when we were all barely old enough to drive, drank beers and hard cider, and a few tokes I might add on our way. We rented ski's and after putting them on, we probably fell a dozen times getting to the foot of the 'bunny' slope. I barely remember how many times I lost hold of the tow rope and had to start again. I got to the top and 'looked down', realizing I had to ski down, I was literally 'scared straight' and that whole travel down the hill was in slow motion.

My second time was around the same time frame, back in the late 70's. I was 'racing' another idiot down a road and where the road entered the city, it became a one-lane in each direction rather than two. I'm guessing we were probably going upwards of eighty miles an hour heading from a 40 mph to a 30 mph zone. It happened to be a street that curved to the right as you hit the 30 mph location. We go around the corner, me right up his tailpipe and lo and behold, some poor sap is backing out of his driveway and we're barreling straight into his side.

At that point, I was kinda kissing my butt goodbye, but as you mentioned..everything slowed down to a crawl. I distinctly remember as I was screeching the brakes to stop how much happier I'd be looking at this in my rearview mirror. Surprise, surprise, I took my foot off the brake for less than a milli-a second and spun the wheel to the left, next thing I know my tires are bumping off the curb and everything settles. The guy in front of me manages to slip behind the guy backing out because he floored it back into is driveway.

My comment to the other three folks in the car was: "Anybody need a drink?" It was affirmative all the way around.

Very true. It was not until my 50s that I really started to deeply understand and appreciate this.

Now, many common ordinary things can suddenly become an almost religious experience for me. Just working outside and stopping and looking around for a couple of minutes and appreciating the whole world makes you say a silent prayer of thanks, just for being.

Well said -> and be thankful for the many blessings we have in our lives.

I had to go out today to get the fur kids food. Interestingly enough both Petco and the Meijer's were out of what they have to/will only eat. Natural Balance had their recall, product came back out on the shelves and then was pulled again, came back and got bought out. Petco was supposed to have gotten a truck yesterday, but didn't. Meijer employee doesn't know WHAT is going on except they are doing a re-do of the store, but the other Meijer store in town was out also so I don't know if people are going to the other store to obtain the product or what....ANYWAY (as you can see I'm tired and rambling so EXCUSE me - as Steve Martin would say) I narrowly escaped getting hit NOT ONE, but FOUR times on the way home. People were driving crazy and doing stupid stuff. Was SO glad to get home and haven't ventured forth since. WHEW! God is good ALL the time!

Would *I* Lie???
I heard recently why things go in slow motion in high fear/ adrenaline situations...

was talking about having people bungee jump and then ask them how long htey were in free-fall, most of them said almost 10 seconds, it was actually under 3 (irrc) ..The reason is, most of life we go through, and our senses are gathering everything, but we don't assign them any importance and are basically processed and dumped/forgot.

When in high-adrenaline/ risk of death/injury the body processes ALL the information it can and is paying attention to very minor details, in order for our minds to understand all of this, all the information we've taken in in 1 or 2 seconds, looking back on it it seems like you have 5x that much information...

...look at all the details terry observed in the .25 seconds he was over that car...

pretty cool:)

Girl survives 360 ft drop after bungee breaks!

After plummeting 360 feet into the crocodile infested Zambezi River, Erin Langworthy was tossed down the river and smashed against rocks. As if it weren’t bad enough that her bungee cord had snapped in the first place, what was left of it was dragging her down! See how, after such a horrific sequence of events, Erin only suffered scrapes and bruises! It’s clear that God was with her that day, protecting her in a nearly impossible situation!

BadMedicine-in my case it happens as fast as the original video. Motorcycle wreck? One second I'm on the ride and the next I'm face-down on the pavement with little or no 'slomo watch it go" effect.

Fall off of some height? I get a "Oops-BAM!!! None of that "Oh look I'm falliiiinnng! Bet this is gonna suck!"

But I'm stone cold in a situation involving danger-it's just those fast, out of control moments do not slow down for me.

Intentionally trying to cheat death on a railroad track is just completely, f***ing, stupid. God truly does look after drunks and fools.

Absolutely! Having lived through a wreck in which my first husband and our daughter died, I can identify with the "everything slowed down" thing, but also have brief moments of blackness where I don't remember anything. In an instant their lives were taken and the lives of our 3-year-old daughter and myself were changed forever. I never forget how quickly that can happen. We are surrounded by blessings everyday, but often don't realize it or take the time to appreciate it.

Watching that video, I can't figure out how the car managed to get athwartships in front of the truck, the way it seemed to do. Anyone have a clear impression of how that accident progressed????

On my way home from a dr's appt today, I approached a busy intersection where the lights were out. I was turning right, thankfully. When I arrived at the intersection, there was no one in the left lane next to me. It was the turn of the vehicle across from me to turn left. Just as he pulled into the turn, a white economy car sped into the intersection, not stopping, and nearly hit the truck turning left, then had the unmitigated gall to flip the guy off and honk as they went past. Only thing that saved their lives is that the trucker was able to stop quickly. Guess what color those arms were hanging out the window flying the bird.

Once upon a time, there were some Police training stuff released. One of the things the Police are taught to do, is, before going through a Green light is to check there are no vehicles going through a Red light. It is something I try to do, and has saved me from an accident on at least one occasion.

Mind you the vehicle that went through a Red light was doing 20 MpH, and not 180KmH, around 111MpH. Blink and the vehicle is there, so I don’t think the taxi stood a chance.

I cannot believe that the passenger in the Ferrari, Ms. Wu Wei Wei, survived! The motorcyclist also survived. (Singapore accident)

I had one of those time slowing down moments back in 1997. The three daughters and I had been to check on school class assignments posted on the school doors, and were headed back home. Fairly major street here, we were stopped third car back in the curbside lane at a red light (planning on a right turn at the corner) when a semi truck pulls up and decided to flip a U-turn in the middle of the street. He almost completely jack-knifed his trailer into us, car (Honda Civic 4 door) slammed into curb, daughters still remember me screaming "Get down!!" as the trailer came through the back window of the car.

When it was all over the window was unbroken, truck driver swore he never even knew he hit anyone (two other truckers coming up behind pulled across the street and blocked him in and stopped him, down the block, after witnessing the accident) and all of us were uninjured. The woman behind me swore she saw the truck lift off the ground. The man across the intersection in the turn lane swore he saw an angel. The business owner was out front about 20 feet from my car and said he saw "something like a cloud" between him and my car, and the truck trailer in the air. The Medics were freaked! (partly 'cuz they all worked with my BIL!) There were shreds of my car's metal on the T-Bar at the back bottom of the truck trailer, my trunk was cut open, and the top of my car had an inch deep cut as well as the driver's side of the car being sliced open down to the gas tank --which was gouged a quarter inch deep.

The most surreal part wasn't even the accident but after, as I stood waiting for Medics and more cops. The truck driver (a very heavily pigmented type) walks up to me, put his arm around me and tried to feel me up saying "It's okay Baby, Daddy's here." He was lucky to live, and the one guy witness said he learned some new words as I unloaded on the _________ (insert minute long stream of unprintable cussing!) who almost killed me and my kids. Several people said the whole accident made them believe in miracles, and to this day I can still see the whole thing in my mind. Took 5 years before I could pass a semi on the highway without fighting a panic attack.

First one, you can see the white car sitting on the side and then pulling out in front of the truck, suicide? Wonder if the 2 in the car with the camera lived...

That's what I thought when I saw the car pull out. There's other ways to suicide without taking innocent people out with you.

How could you tell there were 2 people in the car with the camera?

You can hear a male speak and a female speak/scream, so my guess is at least 2 in the car with the camera.

Ooopps! Thanks! I guess I didn't have my headphones on before the video stopped. They sounded Japanese.
